Here, the extent to which 3 sympatric seabirds (blue petrel, thin- billed prion and common diving petrel) alter their foraging ecology across the annual cycle was investigated using stable isotopes. δ13C and δ15N values were used as proxies of the birds’ foraging habitat and diet, respectively, and were measured in 3 tissues (plasma, blood cells and feathers) that record trophic information at different time scales. Long-term temporal changes were inves- tigated by measuring feather isotopic values from museum specimens. The study was conducted at the subantarctic Kerguelen Islands and emphasizes 4 main features. (1) The 3 species highlight a strong connection between subantarctic and Antarctic pelagic ecosystems, because they all for- aged in Antarctic waters at some stages of the annual cycle. (2) Foraging niches are stage- dependent, with petrels shifting their feeding grounds during reproduction either from oceanic to productive coastal waters (common diving petrel) or from subantarctic to high-Antarctic waters where they fed primarily on crustaceans (blue petrel and thin-billed prion). -

Falkland Islands Circumnavigation – A South Atlantic bird & wildlife spectacle Falkland Islands There is no other groups of islands in the entire Atlantic Ocean which allows fairly easy access to such a diversity of spectacular bird species under such a mild climate and with such a variety of marine mammals thrown in. The Falkland Islands are known to most people today more for their recent political history than their natural history. And even to many nature lovers, the Falklands are often seen as secondary compared to the neighbouring Antarctica and South Georgia. This voyage aims to set the record straight: The Falkland Islands are worth every minute of a two-week circumnavigation, and they will provide us with a long string of wonderful encounters with penguins (4-5 species), albatrosses, cormorants, ducks and geese, raptors, shore birds, song birds and more – as well as seals and sea lions, whales and dolphins. We will see a variety of the islands’ unique landscapes of rolling hills, stone runs, rugged shorelines, pristine white beaches and lush giant kelp beds. We will see the endemic bird species and several near-endemic ones as well, and we intend to visit the southern hemisphere’s largest albatross colony on Steeple Jason. There will be time enough to allow for prolonged visits to the most magnificent of the sites during the best of the weather conditions. 688 THE WILSON BULLETIN l Vol. 105, No. 4, December 1993 Wilson Bull., 105(4), 1993, pp. 688-691 A contact zone between Mountain and Carunculated Caracaras in Ecuador.-Parker et al. (1985) were first to report Mountain Caracaras (Phalcoboenus megalopterus) north of the Maranon depression at Cerro Chinguela in Peru. Fjeldsa and Krabbe (1990) found them on the border of Ecuador and Peru. Ortiz et al. (1990) did not consider the species present in Ecuador, but R. Williams (pers. comm.) found Mountain Caracaras to be fairly common on the Cordillera de Cyabanilla (4”34S,’ 79”22W)’ lo-15 km east of Amaluza in 1990. However, he saw none in this area in 199 1. Williams also recorded the species at 04”2 1S,‘ 79”45W’ near Sozoranga in 1990. E. P. Toyne (pers. comm.) recorded two adult Mountain Caracaras flying together at Ingapirca (3”41S,’ 79”13W)’ on 11 April 1992 immediately east of Acacana. I recorded Mountain Caracaras several times during ornithological fieldwork at 2950 m on the east side of Cerro Acacana (Acanama) (3”41S,’ 79”14W,’ Fig. l), Province of Loja, southern Ecuador, in May and June 1992 and report on those observations here. The area is characterized by “islands” of temperate cloud forest in an “ocean” of pastures. Just below and on the top of Acacana (3420 m), plramo vegetation was prevalent. I recorded Mountain Caracaras on 15 occasions, but never more than two together at one time. Fifteen records were of adults and four of juveniles. The greatest number of sightings in any one day was four. -

Raya Rey 1,2, J. Cristobal Pizarro 1,3, Christopher B. Anderson 1,2 and Falk Huettmann 4 ABSTRACT. Human-wildlife dynamics exhibit novel characteristics in the Anthropocene, given the unprecedented degree of globalization that has increased the linkages between habitats and people across space and time. This is largely caused by transnational mobility and migration, international labor, resource markets, and trade. Understanding the relationship between humans and wildlife, and their associated telecoupling processes, helps to promote better management practices and governance for reconciling socioeconomic and conservation interests. Even remote places on the globe exhibit these features. For example, in southern Patagonia’s coastal and marine ecosystems, seabirds are not only very abundant and charismatic members of the wildlife community, nowadays, their colonies are a main tourism attraction of global significance, and in the past they were used for consumptive and scientific purposes that also linked the “uttermost ends of the Earth” with distant places. -

We did see a few South American Sea Lions, both Rock and Imperial Shags, Chilean Skua and a Southern Giant Petrel. We were going to head further north but decided it was time for lunch and time to prepare for our afternoon outing to Tierra del Fuego National Park. We met our guide, Gaston, at 3:00 PM and headed off to the park. We had four stops planned: Ensenada, Alakush VC, Laguna Negra, and Latapatia Bay. We got to see White-throated Treerunner, Patagonian Sierra Finch, Andean Condor, Black-faced Ibis, lots of geese, and the ubiquitous Austral Thrush and Rufous-collared Sparrow. There really is no mammalian wildlife left on the island, which is unfortunately true of so many of the world’s islands. The edge of the bay is the official end of the Pan American Highway, after its twisting run down the Americas. It was just before sunset and everything was glowing with that late afternoon shine.
