Madonna’s family tree school project proves unsettling for Scarlett when she hides the true identity of Stevie from her daughter. Molly takes Scarlett to task for her lies and blurts out the truth to Madonna. Behind her mother’s back, Madonna turns to Lenny to track down her long lost brother. Lenny persuades Stevie to meet his little sister but he makes it clear he wants nothing to do with his mother, Scarlett. After Madonna and Stevie’s meeting goes well he drives her home to Shieldinch where he bumps into his adoring gran, Molly. With Stevie in touch with his family again, Scarlett reaches out to her estranged son but a happy reunion looks unlikely. Elsewhere, Frankie continues to blackmail her aunt Annie who decides to take matters into her own hands and confess her infidelity to her sister, Lorna. However, the moment is lost when Greig brings good news to the Roth household. Meanwhile, Frankie plays with fire as she grows closer to Rick. It’s the morning after the night before and Angus is suffering from a particularly bad hangover – or so he thinks. However, when his headache symptoms worsen, Annie refers him to hospital for further tests. Madonna is played by Sienna Glackin, Scarlett by Sally Howitt, Frankie by Louise McMenemy, Annie by Dawn Steele, Angus by Scott Fletcher, Stevie by Iain Robertson, Molly by Una McLean, Lenny by Frank Gallagher, Lorna by Alana Hood, Greig by Glen Wallace and Rick by Alex Ferns. From Kyle of Lochalsh to Point in Lewis Mairi tastes a variety of delicious recipes. She tries cupcakes with a kick of gin and tonic - these ones are definitely just for adults - and samples an Italian Stromboli bread with its crisp crust and tasty filling of artichokes, olives and cheese. With fresh ingredients and some enthusiasm you can create something new and Mairi shows how easy this can be in her own kitchen in Uist. She changes a traditional tarte tatin to a delicious savoury dish using red onions and adds thyme to a moist lemon bundt cake for a special twist. 1,000 Films to See Before You Die Published in The Guardian, June 2007 http://film.guardian.co.uk/1000films/0,,2108487,00.html Ace in the Hole (Billy Wilder, 1951) Prescient satire on news manipulation, with Kirk Douglas as a washed-up hack making the most of a story that falls into his lap. One of Wilder's nastiest, most cynical efforts, who can say he wasn't actually soft-pedalling? He certainly thought it was the best film he'd ever made. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (Tom Shadyac, 1994) A goofy detective turns town upside-down in search of a missing dolphin - any old plot would have done for oven-ready megastar Jim Carrey. A ski-jump hairdo, a zillion impersonations, making his bum "talk" - Ace Ventura showcases Jim Carrey's near-rapturous gifts for physical comedy long before he became encumbered by notions of serious acting. An Actor's Revenge (Kon Ichikawa, 1963) Prolific Japanese director Ichikawa scored a bulls-eye with this beautifully stylized potboiler that took its cues from traditional Kabuki theatre. It's all ballasted by a terrific double performance from Kazuo Hasegawa both as the female-impersonator who has sworn vengeance for the death of his parents, and the raucous thief who helps him. The Addiction (Abel Ferrara, 1995) Ferrara's comic-horror vision of modern urban vampires is an underrated masterpiece, full- throatedly bizarre and offensive. The vampire takes blood from the innocent mortal and creates another vampire, condemned to an eternity of addiction and despair. Ferrara's mob movie The Funeral, released at the same time, had a similar vision of violence and humiliation.

Orphaned at a young age, Jane is placed in the care of her wealthy aunt Mrs Reed, who neglects her in favour of her own three spoiled children. Jane is branded a liar, and Mrs Reed sends her to the grim and joyless Lowood School where she stays until she is 19. Determined to make the best of her life, Jane takes a position as a governess at Thornfield Hall, the home of the alluring and unpredictable Edward Rochester. It is here that Jane’s journey into the world, and as a woman, begins. Writer Sandy Welch (North And South, Magnificent Seven), producer Diederick Santer (Shakespeare Retold – Much Ado About Nothing) and director Susanna White (Bleak House) join forces to bring this ever-popular tale of passion, colour, madness and gothic horror to BBC One. Producer Diederick Santer says: “Sandy’s brand-new adaptation brings to life Jane’s inner world with beauty, humour and, at times, great sadness. We hope that her original take on the story will be enjoyed as much by long- term fans of the book as by those who have never read it.” The serial also stars Francesca Annis as Lady Ingram, Christina Cole as Blanche Ingram, Lorraine Ashbourne as Mrs Fairfax, Pam Ferris as Grace Poole and Tara Fitzgerald as Mrs Reed.

It is dream come true time at Glenbogle as a new era is ushered in and the rags-to-riches story of Lexie looks set to end in happy ever after. Or does it? For Lexie, played by Dawn Steele, the changes are unsettling and scary. From a feisty, confident cook-cum- housekeeper, she has to face the daunting prospect of being the Laird’s lady – taking Molly’s place as the mistress of Glenbogle. “There has always been an ‘upstairs downstairs’ feel about the family - and the extended family, the staff,” says Executive Producer Victoria Evans.“Now there is an opportunity to understand the world through Lexie’s eyes as she prepares to come ‘upstairs’ in her new role.

  • Remediating the Eighties: Nostalgia and Retro in British Screen Fiction from 2005 to 2011
REMEDIATING THE EIGHTIES: NOSTALGIA AND RETRO IN BRITISH SCREEN FICTION FROM 2005 TO 2011 Thesis submitted by Caitlin Shaw In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of Doctor of Philosophy De Montfort University, March 2015 2 3 ABSTRACT This doctoral thesis studies a cycle of British film and television fictions produced in the years 2005-2011 and set retrospectively in the 1980s. In its identification and in-depth textual and contextual analysis of what it terms the ‘Eighties Cycle’, it offers a significant contribution to British film and television scholarship. It examines eighties- set productions as members of a sub-genre of British recent-past period dramas begging unique consideration outside of comparisons to British ‘heritage’ dramas, to contemporary social dramas or to actual history. It shows that incentives for depicting the eighties are wide-ranging; consequently, it situates productions within their cultural and industrial contexts, exploring how these dictate which eighties codes are cited and how they are textually used. The Introduction delineates the Eighties Cycle, establishes the project’s academic and historical basis and outlines its approach. Chapter 1 situates the work within the academic fields that inform it, briefly surveying histories and socio-cultural studies before examining and assessing existing scholarship on Eighties Cycle productions alongside critical literature on 1980s, 90s and contemporary British film and television; nostalgia and retro; modern media, history and memory; British and American period screen fiction; and transmedia storytelling. Chapter 2 considers how a selection of productions employing ‘the eighties’ as a visual and audio style invoke and assign meaning to commonly recognised aesthetic codes according to their targeted audiences and/or intended messages.

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Reminder List of Eligible Releases for Distinguished Achievements during 2006 http://www.oscars.org/79academyawards/reminder/ Reminder List of Productions Eligible for Awards All films that have qualified for consideration for 2006 Academy Awards in the non-specialized categories are listed alphabetically by title. Voters making selections in their own branch categories list only film titles on their ballots, not the individuals responsible for the various achievements. For that reason, as well as for reasons of printing time and convenience of using this pamphlet, full credit rosters are not provided for the listed films. An exception to the above exists in the four Acting categories, where simply listing titles would not provide enough voting information. Actors Branch members filling out their Nominations ballots must indicate both titles and the particular performers they are voting for. For that reason, the Reminder List provides a listing of up to fifty cast members for each film. Pictures eligible in the Animated Feature Film, Documentary Feature and Foreign Language Film categories are also eligible in the Best Picture category, provided they meet the qualifications for the category. Foreign Language films are eligible for awards in other categories provided they meet the requirements of Awards Rules Two and Three.
