[Julius added his recollections of the same pe riod. ed.] Some time ago, my progeny, to mark my birthday, came up with an inexpensive, but seductive gift: an album of nostalgia, or the photographic record of the milestones and other gaps in their father's life. In the process they somehow made the archeological find that forms the subject of this ramble; My story starts in one of those characteris tic sleepy Free State dorps (Frankfort), scene of my youth. In the early 1940s the commu nity barely mustered a minyan of , all Zi onists for sure, but lacking the numbers to sus tain any organised Zionist activity, let alone a youth movement. Little wonder then, that a notice in the Jewish press concerning the holding of a summer camp at the Balfour Park Chalutz Farm fired the im agination of a 15 year old 'plattelander.' Here was the opportunity for making closer acquaint ance with practical Zionism and the resurgent drive for Jewish statehood. Somewhat ill-equipped in Labour Zionist ideology, 1 arrived at Balfour Park, which at the time was at the edge of civilization. The camp was frequented by a steady stream of visitors, all of them, it seemed, bent on propa gating to anyone within earshot, his or her own infallible brand of Zionist cure for the ills of the Jewish people. Also at Balfour Park were some colourful individuals whom I took to be permanent ha bitues of the place, until I learned they were on a formal, if unhurried, liach.sharah program, Since the identities of most of the persons in

The unfolding saga of the diminution of Jewish communities in the coimtty districts of South Africa, has not ended with the closing of its synagogues. New chapters are being written about many of their sifrei Torah that are finding their way to Israel, enriching Jewish life and enshrining the memory of many of these communities. At a special general meeting of the Pietersburg congregation recently, it was decided to donate two sifrei Torah to Shivtei Yisrael Synagogue in Ra 'anana. The congregation will celebrate the Hachnasat Sefer Torah on May 20th, with a delegationfrom the Pietersburg Hebrew Congegation. All ex-Pietersburgers are invited to join in the festivities.

The sudden passing of Louis Chesed was a shock to all who knew him. Louis was Chairman of Telfed in Netanya for many years and was the pillar of strength upon whom all leaned for help and advice. He was the centre around whom many of the activities of the South African community in Netanya took place. He was a great organiser and initiated many charitable projects and so cial activities for the large number of former South Africans. His efforts in the klita of new olim and later the large Russian immigration into Netanya were unlimited. Louis was for many years on the Executive of Louis Chesed Telfed and a member of the Loans and Finance Committee of Telfed. He coor dinated assistance to many needy families in Netanya. Louis was a sensitive human being. He was aware of people's feelings and needs. He could relate to people and nothing was too much trouble for him. He visited the sick, welcomed new olim and assisted with their klita. He was involved with the special shop for Russian olim and the kaytana for Russian children in the school holidays. He was active in a number of organisations such as H.O.D., the Netanya Bowling Club and the Young Israel Shul. Louis' love for his family knew no bounds and their love for him was limitless. find solace and comfort in the high regard that he was held in the community and the Mi.. good deeds he has performed during his lifetime. We, his friends, have much to remember. For years, Louis was preoccupied with creating a retirement village for the Netanya and local ex-South African elderly. How happy he was when Protea Bekfar was built and with what enthusi asm he encouraged others to join him and Orkie in moving to the Village. He took charge with others in organising many of the activities of the new home. Louis touched the lives of so many people. He leaves a void in Netanya, but his memory will live on. Our deepest condolences to his wife Orkie, their sons Morris and Stanley and their families Dr. Allan Price

Rosa Anolick aged 95, passed away in Israel leaving a legacy to both her family and friends and to the communities she served. She was a staunch Zionist for over 70 years and a leading light in women's Zionist work. While in Rhodesia she rose to become Honorary Life President of her chapter. The following words - spoken by her daughter Fay Saacks at her gravesite - express all that Rosa was: "She travelled an incredible Journey...spanning a century and three continents, always the leader, the pathfinder, a woman ahead of her time never changing her course or her direction....always seeking excellence, for herself and for those she loved. Always hungry for knowledge...and avid to pass it on to those who were willing to learn. She was an icon, intuitively able to walk with kings and sit down with paupers, and by exam ple she led. She formed deep friendships at every stage of her life, with her peers and with the young. Her interest in their lives was limitless. In all her Journeying she never compromised her true beliefs, always choosing the path of moderation, tolerance and understanding. Her thirst for knowledge was never quenched, her Joy in imparting her wisdom was bound less." An anchor to her family and one who brought joy to all who travelled with her. Rosa will be loved and remembered by all. Marx'Vii Hatchuel (past president of CAZO)
