Golden Icon Award to Judi Dench Golden Icon Award to Judi Dench From the Queen of England to secret agent James Bond’s superior: there’s no character that Judi Dench cannot play. Born in York in 1934, this exceptional actor already attracted a great deal of attention during her early theatre career with the Royal Shakespeare Company. She received a record-breaking eight Olivier Awards during her life on stage. Dench, who first appeared on screen in the drama THE THIRD SECRET (1964), went on to accumulate six Academy Award nominations, before finally winning an Oscar for her short but extraordinary portrayal of Elisabeth I in SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE (1998). Her most memorable roles include playing a teacher in NOTES ON A SCANDAL (2006) and the title role in Stephen Frears’ PHILOMENA (2013). Dench played the legendary „M“ in the James Bond franchise, from GOLDENEYE in 1995 to SPECTRE in 2015. This versatile character actor also delighted critics and audiences alike in the TV series A FINE ROMANCE (1981–1984) and AS TIME GOES BY (1992–2004). The British Dame will travel to Zurich to present her most recent film RED JOAN, which screens after she receives the accolade at the Corso cinema on October 3. Award ceremony: Wednesday, October 3, 20:45 Corso 1 6 A Tribute to... Award to Wim Wenders Wim Wenders has been one of the most important exponents of European cinema since his beginnings in the 1970s as a pioneer of New German Cinema. This was followed by his multi award-winning ‘road movie’ trilogy about up rootedness in post-war Germany, which comprised ALICE IN DEN STÄDTEN (1974), FALSCHE BEWEGUNG (1975) and IM LAUF DER ZEIT (1976). His international breakthrough came with the crime drama DER AMERIKANISCHE FREUND (1977). He has since worked in Europe, the USA, Latin America and Asia. Wenders’ films have garnered some of the industry’s most important awards, including the Golden Lion for DER STAND DER DINGE (1982) and the Golden Palm for PARIS, TEXAS (1984). His documentary films BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB (1999), PINA (2011) and THE SALT OF THE EARTH (2014) have all received Academy Award nominations. • Britain, Canada and the Arts -- Major International, Interdisciplinary Conference
H-Announce CFP: Britain, Canada and the Arts -- Major International, Interdisciplinary Conference Announcement published by Irene Morra on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 Type: Call for Papers Date: June 15, 2017 Location: United Kingdom Subject Fields: British History / Studies, Canadian History / Studies, Cultural History / Studies, Humanities, Theatre & Performance History / Studies Britain, Canada, and the Arts: Cultural Exchange as Post-war Renewal 15-17 June 2017 CALL FOR PAPERS Papers are invited for a major international, interdisciplinary conference to be held at Senate House, London, in collaboration with ENCAP (Cardiff University) and the University of Westminster. Coinciding with and celebrating the 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation, this conference will focus on the strong culture of artistic exchange, influence, and dialogue between Canada and Britain, with a particular but not exclusive emphasis on the decades after World War II. The immediate post-war decades saw both countries look to the arts and cultural institutions as a means to address and redress contemporary post-war realities. Central to the concerns of the moment was the increasing emergence of the United States as a dominant cultural as well as political power. In 1951, the Massey Commission gave formal voice in Canada to a growing instinct, amongst both artists and politicians, simultaneously to recognize a national tradition of cultural excellence and to encourage its development and perpetuation through national institutions. This moment complemented a similar post-war engagement with social and cultural renewal in Britain that was in many respects formalized through the establishment of the Arts Council of Great Britain. It was further developed in the founding of such cultural institutions as the Royal Opera, Sadler’s Wells Ballet, the Design Council and later the National Theatre, and in the diversity and expansion of television and film.
