  • Black Soldiers in Liberal Hollywood
Katherine Kinney Cold Wars: Black Soldiers in Liberal Hollywood n 1982 Louis Gossett, Jr was awarded the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Gunnery Sergeant Foley in An Officer and a Gentleman, becoming theI first African American actor to win an Oscar since Sidney Poitier. In 1989, Denzel Washington became the second to win, again in a supporting role, for Glory. It is perhaps more than coincidental that both award winning roles were soldiers. At once assimilationist and militant, the black soldier apparently escapes the Hollywood history Donald Bogle has named, “Coons, Toms, Bucks, and Mammies” or the more recent litany of cops and criminals. From the liberal consensus of WWII, to the ideological ruptures of Vietnam, and the reconstruction of the image of the military in the Reagan-Bush era, the black soldier has assumed an increasingly prominent role, ironically maintaining Hollywood’s liberal credentials and its preeminence in producing a national mythos. This largely static evolution can be traced from landmark films of WWII and post-War liberal Hollywood: Bataan (1943) and Home of the Brave (1949), through the career of actor James Edwards in the 1950’s, and to the more politically contested Vietnam War films of the 1980’s. Since WWII, the black soldier has held a crucial, but little noted, position in the battles over Hollywood representations of African American men.1 The soldier’s role is conspicuous in the way it places African American men explicitly within a nationalist and a nationaliz- ing context: U.S. history and Hollywood’s narrative of assimilation, the combat film.

  • An Evening with Cary Grant
James J. Asher P.O. Box 1102 Los Gatos, CA 95031 An Evening with Cary Grant JAMES J. ASHER “Let’s go early,” I told my wife, “maybe an hour ahead so that we can get a front row seat to see Cary Grant in person.” How naive can one be? When we arrived, the line snaking into the auditorium was already a block long. I looked around. There were people of all ages — many had flown in from as far away as Japan and Australia just to spend an evening with Cary Grant. Every plush red seat in the huge triple-balcony auditorium at DeAnza College in Cupertino, California was occupied by an excited fan. At regular intervals along the aisles that led to the stage a microphone was positioned. The stage was empty except for a microphone next to a tall stool and a small table on which there was a pitcher of ice water and a glass. Behind these items was a huge pull-down screen for an 8-minute montage of memorable film clips that would be used to present Mr. Grant. Before he appeared, we discovered that Cary Grant was Archibald Alexander Leach born Sunday January 18, 1904 in Bristol, England. The setting was the Edwardian age of gas-lit streets, horse-drawn carriages, trams and four-masted schooners. His father, Elias James Leach 1 James J. Asher P.O. Box 1102 Los Gatos, CA 95031 was a tailor’s presser in Todd’s Clothing Factory and his mother, Elsie Maria Kingdon Leach, came from a family of brewery laborers, laundresses and ships’ carpenters.

  • The Crowd Roars
THE CROWD ROARS Racking up ridiculous risks, clocking catastrophic chances, Mario Andretti spent the seven or more decades of his unequaled life and career collecting the world championship of Formula One, the national title of Indy cars, the Indy and Daytona 500s, Pikes Peak, plus, way back in 1970, winning his favorite race of them all the Sebring 12 Hours, the amazing sports car enduro where, Mario memorably exclaimed to me, “ I took more risks and chances than I would in three Grands Prix! ” All because of a Hollywood movie actor named Steve McQueen. Prior to Sebring, Mario probably never had met McQueen. But finding himself racing at Sebring against somebody who was just some Hollywood actor, was to Mario, an embarrassment – a giant one. Particularly because McQueen’s name was getting championed and chanted over the public-address system; and also because the actor’s racing car was an elderly orsche that was no great chariot of beauty or speed; and furthermore, because McQueen was, incredibly, blowing off Sebring’s usual international field, which included a full team of works Ferrari drivers, captained by Mario; and - in the most acutely embarrassing insult of all - McQueen, an erratic desert bike racer, had, just prior to the 12 Hours, taken yet another spill, broken more bones, and was being forced to brake and double-clutch with his left ankle imprisoned in a cast. It was all too much, and Mario already could predict the headlines: HOLLYWOOD ACTOR WITH BROKEN FOOT BEATS ANDRETTI AT SEBRING McQueen’s co-driver was Peter Revson, ordinarily one of world sports car racing’s fastest players, but now was in a growing state of fatigue, and he had a right to be, because he was almost racing the 12 Hours in the style of iron man.
