Patronage, Business and the Value of Art PATRONAGE, BUSINESS AND THE VALUE OF ART: The Corporate Arts Sponsorship of Absa Bank and Hollard Insurance. Johannesburg, 2009 i ABSTRACT This report is a study into the corporate sponsorship of art as is evident in South Africa today. Starting with a history of patronage in the West, it leads to South Africa and the role currently being played by South African companies in the art world. Through an examination of South African patronage by the government and direct interviews with individuals involved in government and corporate sponsorship of the arts, this report endeavours to show how and why organisations such as Absa Bank and Hollard Insurance have chosen to involve themselves in the art world. I will then follow on to discuss the effect that this corporate sponsorship has on the value of art – financially, socially and culturally. The end result will be study on the relationship that exists between the benefactor and the beneficiary of corporate sponsorship in South Africa and the resulting impact this has on the perceived value of art. Through the gradual implementation of corporate art collections and other sponsorship activities related to the arts, South African companies are effectively creating new forms of patronage and, in doing so, are having a significant impact on how art is being valued in their market. It is the purpose of this research report therefore to examine corporate sponsorship as it currently stands in South Africa, through the use of two case studies – Absa Bank and Hollard Insurance. In a close examination of their individual relationship with the arts – the corporate collections, sponsorship activities and the reasons behind this involvement – I hope to show how a mutually beneficial relationship can be maintained between business and art, the investment potential that has arisen from such a relationship, and ultimately the effect that this has on how art is valued in the art market and the impact this can have on society as a whole. Patronage and sponsorship of the arts has existed for as long as the arts have been acknowledged as a cultural activity. In almost every age artists have sought out patrons to support their endeavours and allow them the opportunity to create works that reflect their experiences of the world and their perceptions of what they see around them (Chagy, n.d.: 19). These patrons in turn, have associated themselves with such artists, to achieve greater visibility in society, increased status, and recognition amongst those they aspire towards. As the reader will come to understand throughout the course of this research report, it has ultimately become a relationship about value, the perception of value and how this is transferred from one partner to another. Historically, however, this exchange of values between the artist and the patron has not proven to be a balanced one. Rather, as I demonstrate in a brief analysis of the history of art and patronage in Chapter 2, from the Renaissance until the twentieth century, the power has tended one way or the other, usually in the direction of the patron, who holds the economic wherewithal required by the artist to successfully carry out his/her craft. Chapter 2 covers the advancements of art in Europe and eventually America, as it transverses from the Renaissance to today, briefly covering changing aspects in the social order as it moves through the Enlightenment, to a growing sense of nationalism; from industrialisation, to the age of mechanical reproduction; commercialisation and the far- reaching arms of globalisation. In doing so, the chapter also introduces the theories of a number of sociologists, anthropologists and art historians, as it tracks the constantly evolving role of the artist in relation to the society in which he/she operates. 1 Giorgio Vasari, for one, in his theses of the great masters of the Renaissance, illustrates how the role of the artist has changed from that of craftsman to independent operator. He portrays the Renaissance artist as a genius in his/her field, wholly responsible for the multitude of masterpieces created throughout the age.     Up To $7000 Up To $3000 Up To $8000 MURALS Call To Artists Downtown Winter Garden Public Art Mural Pilot Project The city of Winter Garden is initiating a pilot public mural program in the historic downtown district to build community pride, build a stronger community identity and activate some key streets by bringing pedestrian activity to streets such as Main, Boyd, Joiner and Tremaine Streets. Historically, murals were used to advertise and draw interest to a street or store. Downtown Winter Garden has had some murals over the years, but currently does not have any murals remaining. The City has asked the Winter Garden Art Association to assist in the call for artists and selection process. The city invites qualified artists to submit proposals for up to three murals to be placed on/or painted on the walls at three locations in the Downtown District. The City has allocated up to $7,000 for Site #1 and $3,000 for Site #2 to be paid to each mural artist. The fee to be paid for Site #3 is to be determined based on the # of sections chosen by the artist, not to exceed $8000. Each mural shall be interactive and encourage creative thought and activity. If the applicant wishes to create a mural of higher value, the applicant must make a case to justify it and demonstrate the ability to secure a portion of the additional funds. The installed mural will become the property of the city of Winter Garden. This initiative will be called #wheregoodthingsgrow and/or #acharmingcitywithajuicypast.

Reddy and Mayukh Dass Abstract. In this paper, we examine the price dynamics of on-line art auc- tions of modern Indian art using functional data analysis. The purpose here is not just to understand what determines the final prices of art objects, but also the price movement during the entire auction. We identify several factors, such as artist characteristics (established or emerging artist; prior sales history), art characteristics (size; painting medium—canvas or paper), competition characteristics (current number of bidders; current number of bids) and auction design characteristics (opening bid; position of the lot in the auction), that explain the dynamics of price movement in an on-line art auction. We find that the effects on price vary over the duration of the auc- tion, with some of these effects being stronger at the beginning of the auc- tion (such as the opening bid and historical prices realized). In some cases, the rate of change in prices (velocity) increases at the end of the auction (for canvas paintings and paintings by established artists). Our analysis sug- gests that the opening bid is positively related to on-line auction price levels of art at the beginning of the auction, but its effect declines toward the end of the auction. The order in which the lots appear in an art auction is nega- tively related to the current price level, with this relationship decreasing to- ward the end of the auction.

These two men were among seventy-two Southern Plains Indian warriors and chiefs selected for incarceration at Fort Marion, in Saint Augustine, at the end of the Southern Plains wars. Among the Cheyenne prisoners was a woman who had fought as a warrior; the wife and young daughter of one of the Comanche men also went to Florida, but not as prisoners. During their three years in exile, Zotom, Howling Wolf, and many of the other younger men made pictures narrating incidents of life on the Great Plains, their journey to Florida, and life at Fort Marion. The drawings explored in this book also have a history subsequent to their creation, a history connected to the patron of the drawings and her ownership of them. Other audiences who have seen and studied Zotom’s and Howling Wolf’s drawings are part of the works’ continuing histories, too. Plains Indian drawings and paintings, including works created by men imprisoned at Fort Marion, were visual narratives, intended to tell stories. Those stories still live, for history is, simply put, composed of stories about the past.

Our primary goal is to predict the price of an art piece/painting in an art auction. We are focusing only on auctions, which occur in auction houses such as Sotheby's and Christie's. In this project, we try to predict the price of art to be sold at Sotheby's auction in London on 3 December 2014. We are trying to build a generic model, capable of predicting price of any piece of art to be sold based on a variety of features associated with an artist, auction house and the piece of art itself. There is a famous quote in the movie "The Monuments Men" where the actor George Clooney talks about the importance/significance of art. He says that wiping out any generation's art history is equivalent to wiping out the entire generation itself. "You can wipe out the entire generation, you can burn their homes to the ground and somehow they will still find their way back. But you can destroy their history, destroy their achievements and this is it they never existed. That is what we are exactly fighting for." Predicting the price of a painting in an art auction turns out be a challenging task as there are lot of functional dynamics involved in the whole auction process.

    ART MUSEUMS AND THE PUBLIC Prepared for the International Art Museums Division Smithsonian Institution October 2001 Smithsonian Institution Office of Policy & Analysis Washington, D.C. 20560-0405 Introduction This is one of a series of papers prepared by the Smithsonian's Office of Policy and Analysis to brief members of the Smithsonian Council in advance of their November, 2001 meeting on Smithsonian art museums. Preparation for this paper included interviews with art museum staff, some from inside the Smithsonian and some from outside the Smithsonian. The Activities of Art Museums The official definition of a museum, according to the grant guidelines for the Institute of Museum and Library Services, is: "an organized and permanent nonprofit institution, essentially educational or aesthetic in purpose, with professional staff, which owns and utilizes tangible objects, cares for them, and exhibits them to the public on some regular schedule." The International Council of Museums (ICOM) defines a museum as: "a nonprofit making, permanent institution in the service of society and of its development, and open to the public, which acquires, conserves, researches, communicates and exhibits, for purposes of study education and enjoyment, material evidence of humans and their environment." The American Association of Museums (AAM), however, has altered its official definition to insist only on the use of objects, not on their ownership.
