First record of leucism in brown pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis) in Costa Rica Primer registro de leucismo en el pelícano pardo (Pelecanus occidentalis) en Costa Rica Roberto Vargas-Masís*1,2 & Pilar Arguedas-Rodríguez1,3 ABSTRACT Leucism in birds is rarely observed in the Pelecaniformes order and has not been recorded for the brown pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis) in Costa Rica. We describe an observation of a leucistic brown pelican with white plumage, pink coloration on the bill and feet, but normal color on the eyes. Leucism in birds is the most frequently reported color aberration and these cases present low survival rates for individuals. Although isolated cases occur in birds, these reports help determine the frequency of these events for spe- cific bird populations and species. Keywords: Leucism, brown pelican, plumage, albinism, Costa Rica. RESUMEN El leucismo en las aves se observa raramente en el orden Pelecaniformes y no ha sido registrado para el pe- lícano pardo (Pelecanus occidentalis) en Costa Rica. Describimos una observación de un pelícano marrón leucístico con plumaje blanco, coloración rosa en el pico y las patas, pero color normal en los ojos. El leu- cismo en las aves es la aberración de color más frecuentemente reportada y estos casos presentan tasas bajas de supervivencia para los individuos. Aunque se presentan casos aislados en aves, estos reportes permiten determinar la frecuencia de estos eventos en ciertas poblaciones y especies de aves. Over the past few years, an increase in Peruvian Pelican Pelecanus thagus presence has occurred in southern Chile, along the coast of the Los Lagos region, at the southern end of its range. We evaluate the presence of the pelicans in seabird colonies of this region and describe their behavior and interactions with other seabird species. Three colonies were surveyed: San Pedro Bay Islets (40°55′S), Kaikué-Lagartija Island (41°48′S) and Caicura Island (41°42′S). Counts were carried out from boats, and age structure was determined based on plumage color. Pelicans were found to be numerous and included a high proportion of juveniles. With the exception of one pelican egg (unhatched) found at Caicura Island in December 2013, there was no evidence of pelican nesting. Potential competitive interactions between the pelicans and other seabirds were evident. -

Email: [email protected] Lightweight capillary tube depth gauges were attached to eight petrel species breeding at New Zealand colonies during the period 1998-2008. This paper presents the first information on the diving ability of Pterodroma petrels. Grey-faced Petrels, Pterodroma macroptera gouldi, re corded maximum dives down to 23 m. Males (6.3 ± 6.3 m SD) dived deeper on average than females (3.6 ± 2.5 m) during the incubation period but not significantlyso (P�0.06). Breeding birds dived significantlydeeper on average than non-breeders, and breeding males dived significantly deeper on average than non-breeding males. The two small Pterodroma species sampled, Pterodroma pycrofti and Pterodroma nigripennis, only exhibited shallow dives down to 2 m but sample sizes were small. Sooty Shearwaters, Pujfinus griseus, had mean maximum dive depths of 42.7 ± 23.7 m, with males (53.0 ± 17.3 m) diving significantly deeper on average than females (20.1 ± 20.4 m) during the incubation period. One male Sooty Shearwarer dived to nearly 93 m, the deepest dive so far recorded in the order Procellariiformes. -

Taxon 1.1 Class Aves 1.2 Order Procellariiformes 1.3 Family Pelecanoididae 1.4 Genus and species Pelecanoides garnotii Lesson, 1828 1.5 Common name Potoyunco, Yunco; Pato Yunco, Peruvian diving petrel 2. Biological data 2.1 Distribution The Procellariiformes group and its abundance of species suggest that they play a potentially important role as consumers in marine pelagic ecosystems (Prince & Morgan, 1987). More specifically, the distribution of the Pelecanoidedae family is restricted to the Southern Hemisphere, and only the Peruvian diving petrel (Pelecanoides garnotii) nests above the 6ºS, without reaching the equator (Warham, 1990). A species endemic to the Peruvian or Humboldt Current, is the only diving petrel to be found in waters with a temperature above 7°C in the western coast of South America (Murphy, 1936), ranging from Isla Lobos de Tierra, Peru (6º 27’ S.) down to Isla Corral, Chile ( 37º S), and being capable of reaching 42ºS during El Niño episodes (Harrison, 1983). Reports from the early 20th century cover the cities of Ancón, Callao, Chilca, several areas of Bahía de Pisco, Arica, Iquique, Taltal, and Valparaíso. (Murphy, 1936). At present the species has the southernmost limit of its range in Coquimbo, Chile (30ºS). In comparison with other species of the family Pelecanoididae, P. garnotii is the only one to reach low latitudes (Jahncke and Goya, 1998), and it breeds all year round. -
