Hythe is a coastal community town on the edge of the . The 2013 midyear population estimates published by the Office of National Statistics gives the total population of Hythe as 11,010, with 5,170 males and 5,840 females. The ward has proportionally less people aged under 50 than the Kent average, and it also has a much larger percentage of people aged over 60.

Marital status

The majority of people in Hythe are single, but there are a significant number of people in relationship of some form. The proportion of people who are divorced or single (as a percentage of the population aged over sixteen), is far higher than the Kent average. The area has lower proportion of married couples.

Town Team are a group of high street independent traders working together to promote Hythe High Street to more shoppers. The group was established in 2013. They have monthly meetings, and have helped create roadside banners promoting Hythe. The group works closely with Hythe Chamber of Commerce and Tourism.

Hortus Corner Traders are a group of local Hythe traders, keen to promote Hythe. They received money from KCC via a Local Member Grant in 2014 to produce Visitors Welcome leaflets – a volunteer led tourism initiative.31

The length of the bar indicates the size of the disparity: a score of 50, means the proportion within Hythe is half the UK average, a score of 150 would make it 50% higher than the UK average. The data shows that a Hythe is broadly in line with national average for household income.

Economic activity

Hythe is above the Kent average for the proportion of working aged (16-64) people who are retired or a student. The ward has a lower proportion of people who are in full time work or are looking after the home/ family.

The major employment sectors in Hythe are: construction, motor vehicle trades, education and health/social care. Hythe is above average for the proportion of its working age population employed in education and health/social care. Hythe is below average for the proportion employed in motor vehicle trades and water supply/sewage.

The main road through the ward is the A259 which runs from Folkestone to Hastings via Hythe, Dymchurch and New Romney.

Train Service: Sandling (SDG) Station is within the north west of the Hythe Ward. The train service is operated by South Eastern Railway.33

Motorway: The M20 motorway is accessible to the north west of Hythe ward via Junction 11 and to the north east of Hythe via Junction 12. It should be noted that a section of the M20 runs through the north of the Hythe ward.

Eurotunnel - the Channel Tunnel is located within the neighbouring ward of Cheriton. The Tunnel carries high-speed Eurostar passenger trains, the Eurotunnel Shuttle for road vehicles – the largest such transport in the world and international freight trains.34

Due to concerns regarding speeding on Horn Street, residents have been issued with hand held speed cameras to monitor situation.36

Prince’s Parade, a former rubbish tip, has been identified as the preferred location for exciting new proposals with facilities that have been eagerly anticipated for many years182. Plans currently being considered are for new primary school; swimming pool and leisure complex; 36 quality homes and a community park by the canal.

Save Prince’s Paradelx is a non political group of local people who are determined to see that Prince’s Parade remains a public open space. They are opposed to any development of the site.183

Major Site Redevelopment in Neighbouring Wards

The new development at Nicholls Quarry (Martello Lakes) in the neighbouring Hythe Rural Ward will have an impact on the Hythe ward, the development of 1,050 new homes, may mean increased usage of the Hythe wards infrastructure and amenities.

St. Leonard’s is the main church with two other places of worship within its parish: the Holy Cross and St. Micheal’s Methodist-Anglian Church Centre. Saltwood Church is the original mother church to St. Leonard’s Hythe.

There are several places of worship in the Hythe ward, covering different religions, including Church of England, Roman Catholic, Methodist, Salvation Army and Spiritualism. The churches play a very key role in the Hythe community, being bases for community activity. For example the Farmers Market is run from the Hythe Methodist Church, whilst Hythe St. Leonard’s holds many music recital evenings, and United Reform holds an Arthritis care group twice a month.

St. Peter and St. Paul church at Saltwood is a parish in the Diocese of Canterbury. Under this parish is the Chapel of Ease (Pedlinge Church).
