Lessons Learned from Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg
LESSONS LEARNED FROM JUSTICE RUTH BADER GINSBURG Amanda L. Tyler* INTRODUCTION Serving as a law clerk for Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in the Supreme Court’s October Term 1999 was one of the single greatest privileges and honors of my life. As a trailblazer who opened up opportunities for women, she was a personal hero. How many people get to say that they worked for their hero? Justice Ginsburg was defined by her brilliance, her dedication to public service, her resilience, and her unwavering devotion to taking up the Founders’ calling, set out in the Preamble to our Constitution, to make ours a “more perfect Union.”1 She was a profoundly dedicated public servant in no small measure because she appreciated just how important her role was in ensuring that our Constitution belongs to everyone. Whether as an advocate or a Justice, she tirelessly fought to dismantle discrimination and more generally to open opportunities for every person to live up to their full human potential. Without question, she left this world a better place than she found it, and we are all the beneficiaries. As an advocate, Ruth Bader Ginsburg challenged our society to liber- ate all persons from the gender-based stereotypes that held them back. As a federal judge for forty years—twenty-seven of them on the Supreme Court—she continued and expanded upon that work, even when it meant in dissent calling out her colleagues for improperly walking back earlier gains or halting future progress.2 In total, she wrote over 700 opinions on the D.C. -

Philadelphia and the Southern Elite: Class, Kinship, and Culture in Antebellum America
PHILADELPHIA AND THE SOUTHERN ELITE: CLASS, KINSHIP, AND CULTURE IN ANTEBELLUM AMERICA BY DANIEL KILBRIDE A DISSERTATION PRESENTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA 1997 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS In seeing this dissertation to completion I have accumulated a host of debts and obligation it is now my privilege to acknowledge. In Philadelphia I must thank the staff of the American Philosophical Society library for patiently walking out box after box of Society archives and miscellaneous manuscripts. In particular I must thank Beth Carroll- Horrocks and Rita Dockery in the manuscript room. Roy Goodman in the Library’s reference room provided invaluable assistance in tracking down secondary material and biographical information. Roy is also a matchless authority on college football nicknames. From the Society’s historian, Whitfield Bell, Jr., I received encouragement, suggestions, and great leads. At the Library Company of Philadelphia, Jim Green and Phil Lapansky deserve special thanks for the suggestions and support. Most of the research for this study took place in southern archives where the region’s traditions of hospitality still live on. The staff of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History provided cheerful assistance in my first stages of manuscript research. The staffs of the Filson Club Historical Library in Louisville and the Special Collections room at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond were also accommodating. Special thanks go out to the men and women at the three repositories at which the bulk of my research was conducted: the Special Collections Library at Duke University, the Southern Historical Collection of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and the Virginia Historical Society. -

Drowned in Sound Kort.Indd 1 19-06-2008 21:28:17 Zoppo & Avec-A Together with My School Friend Cees I Started a Band Called Zoppo
30-05-2008, Primavera Sound Festival, Barcelona 3rd Bridge Helix From Experimental Punk to Ancient Chinese Music & Universal Physical Laws of Consonance This article is a written excerpt of my lecture I gave at the Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona about my self built musical instruments. I explained what kind of instruments I make, why I make them and for which bands. I showed the audience my own copies and played a little on those instruments. Additionally I gave a deeper explanation about one particular instrument I have created, the Moodswinger. After finishing this instrument I rediscovered this instrument is not only a musical instrument, but also a educational measurement instrument which shows a universal system of consonant values based on simple physical laws. I discovered all musical scaling systems all over the world are derived from this basical system, inclusive the worst inharmonic deviated tuning system of all these variations, our Western 12-tone logaritmic equal tempered scale. - Yuri Landman The Beginning I bought my first guitar and bass guitar when I was 18. I always had a fascination for direct and simple punk rock structures instead of highly practised virtuose guitar playing used in symphonic rock and hard rock. In line of this estethical rule I refused to take traditional guitar lessons from a jazz or blues guitar teacher. I took notice of some chords and know where to put my fingers for a C7 or minor D-chord, but I have never practised long enough to play them well. I cannot even play Nirvana’s Polly properly for instance. -

Since anti-gunners are always saying “no one wants to take your guns away” or they want me to live under their take of “sensible gun laws” (neither of which I believe to be prudent, sensible or anything remotely truthful) I figured I would go to the NRA’s Institute of Legislative Action to find out who are the people that want to be sure that I can’t defend my home or go shooting my .22 in the woods (both heinous acts of human behavior to be sure). So, hats off the the NRA-ILA team for compiling this list. Here is what the NRA-ILA team had to say. The following organizations have lent monetary, grassroots or some other type of direct support to anti-gun organizations. In many instances, these organizations lent their name in support of specific campaigns to pass anti-gun legislation such as the March 1995 HCI “Campaign to Protect Sane Gun Laws.” Many of these organizations were listed as “Campaign Partners,” for having pledged to fight any efforts to repeal the Brady Act and the Clinton “assault weapons” ban. -

Scott Campbell certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: PERFECTION, WRETCHED, NORMAL, AND NOWHERE: A REGIONAL GEOGRAPHY OF AMERICAN TELEVISION SETTINGS Committee: Chairperson* Date approved: ii ABSTRACT Drawing inspiration from numerous place image studies in geography and other social sciences, this dissertation examines the senses of place and regional identity shaped by more than seven hundred American television series that aired from 1947 to 2007. Each state‘s relative share of these programs is described. The geographic themes, patterns, and images from these programs are analyzed, with an emphasis on identity in five American regions: the Mid-Atlantic, New England, the Midwest, the South, and the West. The dissertation concludes with a comparison of television‘s senses of place to those described in previous studies of regional identity. iii For Sue iv CONTENTS List of Tables vi Acknowledgments vii 1. The Waste Land of Law School Fiction
BOOK REVIEW The Waste Land Of Law School Fiction Arthur D. Austin* Sad things can happen when an author chooses the wrong subject: first the author suffers, then the reader, and finally the publisher, all to- gether in a tiny whirlpool of pain.' Law schools generate controversy and initiate change. They attract the "best and the brightest" students. 2 They have not, however, received the ultimate measure of recognition-the examination of institutional character through literary fiction. Novels about law school society can be counted on one hand-with a finger and thumb left over.3 They are John Osborn's The Paper Chase,4 Katherine Roome's The Letter of the Law, 5 and Michael Levin's The Socratic Method. 6 None succeed as fic- tion.7 This review focuses on the way each writer uses style, plot, and * Edgar A. Hahn Professor of Jurisprudence, Case Western Reserve University School of Law. 1. Sheed, The Exile, N.Y. REV. oF BooKs, Oct. 27, 1988, at 35, col. 1. 2. Even this causes controversy. Harvard University President Bok claims that the "brain drain" into law schools is "a massive diversion of exceptional talent into pursuits that often add little to the growth of the economy, the pursuit of culture, the enhancement of the human spirit." Lieber- man & Goldstein, Why Have Lawyers Proliferated?, N.Y. Times, Aug. 6, 1986, at A27, col. 1. 3. Novels with legal themes are prevalent. Wigmore's analysis of "legal literature" remains the best introduction to the subject. See Wigmore, A List Of One Hundred Legal Novels, 17 ILL. -
