1844 Jan 8 Settlement Statement of Ezekiel Menear, St Breock

8th January 1844 Statement of Ezekiel Menear Ezekiel Menear states that I was born as I have heard and believe at Burlawn in St Breock in May 1794, where my Father and Mother John and Ann Menear lived. I remained with them until I was about 12 or 13 years old. I then went to St Merryn as a servant with William Andrew of Towan. I lived with him two years for 30/- the first year and 50/- the second. My Mother made the bargain. My Father and Mother received my wages. I then came home for some time. I then went to Withiel to live with Thomas Julian of Trenance. I lived with him as a servant two years my father made the bargain for £4 the first year and five the second my father received the wages. I then went to live with Grace Tucker at Black Hay in Withiel. I lived there twelve Months for £6 a year my father made the bargain and received my wages and provided me with clothes. I then came home and remained home until about Christmas 1812 when I went to Egloshayle and worked with John Lobb a Carpenter about 6 weeks after I went there I agreed with John Lobb to go as an apprentice with him and on the twentieth day of February 1813 I being at the time unmarried and without child or children I bound myself by Indenture of that date which I now produce. I served him under the Indenture for about nine Months during which time I resided and slept more than forty nights in the parish of Egloshayle. In October 1813 we parted and Mr John Lobb gave up my Indenture to me the night before he gave up my Indenture I slept in the parish of Egloshayle. I then went to ? at which I have been working ever since. I was married in 1820 to Mary Davey we have had six children only three now living John now aged about twenty one Philip now aged about 19 years and William now aged about 15 years. Neither of my said sons John, Philip or William have ever gained a Settlement in their own right about 19 years ago I was put to Bodmin for a sentence. My wife and one child received relief from the parish of Egloshayle during the time I was there. I never rented any thing amounting to £10 a year or done any other act to gain a settlement besides what I have above stated as witness my hand this 8th day of January 1844 (signed) Ezekiel Menear N.B. this document has been created by the History Data Service (HDS) SN 6738 - Cornwall Census Returns, 1851 This study contains a complete transcript of the Cornwall returns of the census of 1851. Using microfiche loaned to the project by the LDS, volunteers, recruited online transcribed the pages of the enumerators’ books for the Cornwall 1851 census. Other volunteers checked the data using Free Census software. Finally, the organiser validated the data, using yet another piece of Free Census software. The data was collected in 1851. The raw data was in the form of microfiche, organised in accordance with the PRO regulations. Copyright is held by the Crown and TNA confirmed that publishing the transcripts online is allowed. This year we are focussing on the quality of the guidance that we provide to Steering Groups. To that end, please be aware that the guidance notes on the Neighbourhood Planning webpage are being updated. We are also offering the opportunity for groups to meet with other service officers during the quarterly surgeries that we host, to ensure that we can support groups in producing high quality NDPs going forward. Melissa Burrow has been welcomed into the Neighbourhood Planning Team, and there will be some restructuring regarding named officers for Steering Groups. An email will follow in the coming weeks to update groups on this. We are looking forward to a productive year of Neighbourhood Planning across Cornwall. It has been transcribed, checked and validated by the volunteers of the Cornwall Online Census Project, the Cornish arm of the Free Census project. Image copies of the original returns can be viewed on film, fiche or CDROM from commercial suppliers and at many research facilities around the world. This study contains a full transcription of the 1891 census returns for Cornwall—a snapshot of the people and places of Cornwall on the night of April 5th, 1891. The file names are the PRO piece number code (without punctuation). About UK Census Returns About Free Census (FreeCEN) was started early in 2000 with a pilot project for the 1891 census returns for Devon. The aim of Free Census is to transcribe all the UK 19th century census returns. It is part of FreeUKGEN and is a sister project to FreeBMD and FreeREG. The intention is that all three of the UK primary sources for the family historian will be online and “free to view.” Six months after the Devon project started, the Cornwall 1891 commenced. Most English and Welsh counties are now covered for the 1891, with the Scottish projects concentrating on the 1841. There are several English 1861 projects, using commercially produced discs and two English 1841 projects, including Cornwall.
