Jamestown 2007 2004 Report to the General Assembly

Implementation was the resounding theme for 2003 as the Jamestown 2007 Steering Committee moved from conceptualization to execution of plans and projects. Focusing on several key initiatives, the committee, under the guidance of chairman Stuart W. Connock, created several new key alliances and partnerships on a statewide, national and international level. In 2003, the Steering Committee kicked off the 2007 Community program, welcoming forty new communities in its first six months of operation; hosted and briefed the newly appointed federal Jamestown 400th Commemoration Commission; expanded the 2007 staff, including hiring William W. Cone as president & executive producer to begin high level presentations to bring on corporate sponsors, and Stuart W. Connock developed state and national media contacts to help promote Jamestown 2007 across the state, the nation and the world. The committee, working hand in hand with Virginia’s congressional delegation and 2007 partners and consultants secured significant support in the House of Representatives and the U. S. Senate for the passage of the Jamestown commemorative coin bills. Committee and staff also assisted in William W. Cone the completion of Phase II and the onset of Phase III of the Jamestown 2007 transportation plan, supported a partnership with the Jamestown Stamp and Cachet Committee for the issuance of commemorative stamps and supported cultural initiatives with the Virginia African-American Forum and Virginia Indian organizations. Throughout 2003, Virginia’s 400th anniversary was consistently marketed through several different mediums including the 2007 Ambassador Speakers Bureau, the Jamestown 2007 Quarterly Update, the newly revised 2007 Web site, the standard and vanity license plates, various newspapers across the country, as well as several trade publications and magazines with distributions to America’s top marketing, manufacturing and advertising executives. More than one hundred volunteer members of 2007 committees, subcommittees, working groups and task forces representing over 50 localities and communities are investing thousands of volunteer hours of their time and expertise in planning projects, programs and events that are being designed to help make Virginia’s 400th anniversary in 2007 a resounding success that generates new tourism, expands economic development and renews awareness that Virginia is our nation’s birthplace.
