It is a multi-use track for cycling and walking so share with care. Getting there The Timber Trail is an easy 1-2 hr drive from Rotorua, Taupo and Hamilton. It begins at Pureora Forest off SH30 between Te Kuiti and Mangakino. The central part of the trail can be accessed from Piropiro campsite at the end of Kokomiko Road, Waimiha, and from Ongarue via SH 4 at the southern end.

It appeared in that section of the 1970 report. Populus deltoides 'Virginiana', Necklace Poplar. Frimley Park, Hastings. Dbh 262 cm, height 44.3 m, with a clear trunk to 9 m, in 1974. Planted c.1874. This is the largest known deciduous tree in New Zealand and one of the largest poplars in the world. Growth appears to be declining as since 1969 diameter has increased by only 4 cm and there has been little if any·height growth.     A supplementary finding-aid to the archives relating to Maori Schools held in the Auckland Regional Office of Archives New Zealand MAORI SCHOOL RECORDS, 1879-1969 Archives New Zealand Auckland holds records relating to approximately 449 Maori Schools, which were transferred by the Department of Education. These schools cover the whole of New Zealand. In 1969 the Maori Schools were integrated into the State System. Since then some of the former Maori schools have transferred their records to Archives New Zealand Auckland. Building and Site Files (series 1001) For most schools we hold a Building and Site file. These usually give information on: • the acquisition of land, specifications for the school or teacher’s residence, sometimes a plan. • letters and petitions to the Education Department requesting a school, providing lists of families’ names and ages of children in the local community who would attend a school. (Sometimes the school was never built, or it was some years before the Department agreed to the establishment of a school in the area). The files may also contain other information such as: • initial Inspector’s reports on the pupils and the teacher, and standard of buildings and grounds; • correspondence from the teachers, Education Department and members of the school committee or community; • pre-1920 lists of students’ names may be included. There are no Building and Site files for Church/private Maori schools as those organisations usually erected, paid for and maintained the buildings themselves. By Averill Elizabeth Manning, University of Canterbury 2018 ABSTRACT This research investigated the narratives of nine Māori young adult students. The primary objective was to gain a deeper understanding of the lived experiences and various challenges confronting this group of Māori students. Many Māori students who enrol at Te Kura as young adults seek to gain the qualifications that they have not achieved while at face-to-face schools. This group of students have sometimes been referred to as a part of New Zealand’s “tail of underachievement” (Education and Science Committee, 2008). The schools these students attended prior to coming onto the roll of Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu [The Correspondence School] were all located in the Waitaha [Canterbury] region of New Zealand’s South Island. Each of these schools was, to varying degrees, dominated by what appeared to be a Eurocentric institutional culture of schooling. The study’s findings resonate with those of previous studies; however, while these student accounts echoed the sentiments of students in previous research studies (Macfarlane, A. H., 2004; Bishop & Berryman, 2006; Penetito, 2005; Manning, 2009) the narratives of each student focused closely up on the challenges these students faced as Māori students in this context. This study adopted a qualitative research methodology underpinned by a Kaupapa Māori [translation] philosophy and narrative research methodology.

    District 9970, PO Box 12-243, Christchurch 8242 Club Bulletin, 26th May 2021, Issue 42 Rotary Club of Christchurch South Christchurch South Rotary Awards Evening On Wednesday evening, we were entertained and privileged to be involved with our third annual Community Awards Evening. Our quest speaker was Matt Brown, who was ably supported by his wife Sarah, and themed their presentation ”She Is Not Your Rehab”. Matt is a survivor of family and childhood sexual abuse, growing up in a family of nine siblings, in South Auckland and in Aranui, where his family moved when he was three. He grew up thinking and believing that physical and emotional abuse was normal. Matt promised himself that he would be a voice for the many people who feel voiceless and have experienced and are still experiencing similar trauma. Matt stared his barbering business on a garden shed in Aranui. As his talent and client list grew, he gained a large following on social media, which he now uses to share messages of inspiration and overcoming. His business, My Fathers Barbers, is now based in Riccarton Road, which is considered to be a Community Space, where men are encouraged to talk and not feel judged, Matt and Sarah regularly visit Christchurch City Mission and Christchurch Men’s Prison, donating their time and offering haircuts. In 2018, Matt partnered with Ministry of Social Welfare for their “It’s not OK campaign” to increase awareness about the roll of barbers in creating safe spaces that allow men to talk, and change their lives. Matt and Sarah have written a book titled “She Is Not Your Rehab”, which is to be published later this year.
