Mystic Valley Regional Charter School Athletics Week In Review Baseball Season Record: 3-0 The Week That Was: MVRCS opened the 2021 season and the Bob Guidi era with three wins, all at the expense of Nashoba Tech. The Eagles turned away the Vikings 10-1 to open the season with junior ace Brandon Paris striking out 13 and scattering 4 hits in 5 innings of work. Senior Aaron Hickey and junior Tyler Santoro each collected a pair of hits as the Eagle bats combined for 12 hits. The team then swept a doubleheader with Nashoba in the friendly confines of Howard Park, winning 7-2 in the opener and 7-3 in the nightcap. Tyler Santoro and his brother, freshman Dylan Santoro were the story on the mound combined for 17 strikeouts. Junior captain Jake Stover was especially lethal behind the plate throwing out a trio of runners. Tyler Santoro registered four hits during the doubleheader. From the Coach: “It is nice to see our ballclub come together with solid pitching and timely hitting. We will only get better as the season progresses .”--Bob Guidi. Up next: The Eagles have a pair of contests this week, first traveling to Salem to tangle with Salem Charter on 5.18 at 4:30 p.m. before a trip to Billerica on 5.20 for a 4 p.m. conference matchup against Shawsheen. Boys Lacrosse Season Record: 0-4 The Week That Was: There were bright spots aplenty for the Eagles despite failing to come out on top. Opposite Shawsheen Tech freshman Matt Almas scored along with senior captain Matt Mullenand junior Shamus Royds. In the setback opposite Lowell Catholic, senior captain Amine Rih had four goals while Royds added two. The team played arguably its best game of 2021 against Lowell Catholic on 5.14,, playing the Crusaders toe-to-toe with Royds (4 goals), Mullen (3 goals) and Rih (3 goals) pacing the offensive charge. From the Coach: “At the start of the game I challenged the kids to come out flying and to play the best lacrosse they could. We played some of the years best lacrosse the first half, ending the half on top 5-3. Going into the final couple minutes the team was down 10-9 and refused to quit. .”--Ryan Cerrato ’11 following Lowell Catholic match on 5.14. Up next: The team is home to Northeast on 5.19 and will host Essex Tech on 5.21. Both matches get underway at 4:15 p.m. Girls Lacrosse Season Record: 3-1 The Week That Was: After opening the week with a 17-11 setback to Shawsheen, the Eagles took care of business, dispatching of Lowell Catholic 10-6 and 14-7 to run their record to 3-1. In the Shawsheen loss, senior Daniela D’Alleva scored 6 times while 7th grade phenom Lucia Antonucci scored on five occasions. In the first win over Lowell Catholic, despite playing with just 10 players, the Eagles wrestled control of the proceedings and never looked back as Antonucci and D’Alleva each scored four times. Sophomore netminder Danni Hughes was credited with 11 saves. Junior Allie Veit registered her first varsity goal. Two days later, D’Alleva scored 7 times and Antonucci four with Veit scoring 3 times. Hughes once again proved dominant stopped 17 shots. From the Coach: “Today was a true test of our drive and determination. Despite going into the game 2 players down, we were able to start the game strong at 7-0 in the first quarter. WE were able to hold that lead throughout the rest of the game. I am just so impressed with the will power and perseverance the girls keep bringing each game. .”--Maggie Bodington following win over Lowell Catholic on 5.13. Up next: The Eagles hit the road for a pair of 4 p.m. contests, on 5.19 at Northeast and on 5.21 opposite Essex Tech. Softball Season Record: 2-2 The Week That Was: The Eagles dropped a pair of games to league rival Nashoba. In the first game of the week, freshman Giuliana Micciche fanned 13 batters while 8th grader Sophia Marcus registered a triple. Freshman catcher Molly Hickey had a pair of hits in the defeat. Two days later, Micciche struck out nine and Hickey went 2-for-4 with a double and home run. From the Coach: “The girls continue to impress me with their hard work ethic. Even though things don’t go our way sometimes, they never give up and continue to support each other. We are continuing to learn and have flexibility in the roster. We will continue to work hard and fix little mistakes to bring home a W..”--Brittany Smith after 5.13 game. Up next: The Eagles are off this week. Track and Field Season Record: Girls 1-0, Boys 0-1 The Week That Was: The Eagles squad emerged victorious, besting homestanding Nashoba 79-46. Field event winners for the Eagles were senior Shannon Brady (shot), junior Hailey Hickey (discus), senior Britney Jean (javelin) and freshman Reilly Hickey (long jump). On the track, individual winners for MVRCS were sophomore Asal Bahrampouri (400 hurdles), Brady in the 110 hurdles, sophomore Chloe Jones in the 100 and 200, Hailey Hickey in the 400 and junior Rupa Raj in the 800. On the boys side, sophomore Daniel Nguyen claimed victory in the 1600 . From the Coach: “All the athletes performed well and put in maximum effort. After two years off it was great to see them out there. There were a lot of great times posted on the track and distances in field events. We will continue to practice hard to improve on those throughout the year. ”--Cody Duff. Up next: The team will take its act to Lynn for a meet against KIPP on 5.20 at 4 p.m..
