As television must always create its spaces and places on the screen, what, then, is the significance of the varying emphases as well as the commonalities constructed in televisual high school settings in UK, US, and Japanese television shows? This master’s thesis considers how fictional televisual high schools both contest and construct national identity. In order to do this, it posits the existence of the televisual school story, a descendant of the literary school story. It then compares the formal and narrative ways in which Glee (2009-2015), Hex (2004-2005), and Ouran koukou hosutobu (2006) deploy space and place to create identity on the screen. In particular, it examines how heteronormativity and gender roles affect the abilities of characters to move through spaces, across boundaries, and gain secure places of their own. ii TABLE OF CONTENTS Abstract ii Table of Contents iii Acknowledgement v Introduction Orientation 1 Space and Place in Schools 5 Schools on TV 11 Schools on TV from Japan, 12 the U.S., and the U.K.

  • (PUGC), Princeton's Oldest and Most
FACTSHEET December 2012 The Princeton University Glee Club (PUGC), Princeton's oldest and most prestigious choir, was founded in 1874 by Andrew Fleming West '74, the first Dean of the Graduate College and continues to be the premier vocal ensemble at Princeton University. WHY IS IT CALLED A 'GLEE CLUB'? The name 'Glee Club' comes from 18th Century England – specifically from Harrow School (where the Glee Club's current director was educated!). The term referred then to a small group of men singing parlour songs, folk songs and other ditties in close harmony, normally without accompaniment. The early American Glee Clubs were based on this model but have since exploded in to the large ensembles we now find at many Ivy League schools. At Princeton we keep the name 'Glee Club' out of reverence for this tradition. WHO IS THE DIRECTOR? Gabriel Crouch has been the director of musical and choral performance at Princeton University and the director of the Princeton University Glee Club since 2010. Before his current post, Mr. Crouch was a member of the world renowned British vocal ensemble, the King’s Singers. In 2005, Mr. Crouch left the King’s Singers to accept the position as head of the choral program at DePauw University until joining the faculty at Princeton. Mr. Crouch holds a degree from the University of Cambridge where he completed a choral scholarship at Trinity College. HOW LARGE IS THE GLEE CLUB? The precise number of the Glee Club fluctuates from anywhere between 60 and 80 members. Currently, there are around 80 students who are current members of Glee Club as well as a piano accompanist who is also a student.

  • Rumor: Britney Spears Could Be Engaged After Her Tour Ends
Rumor: Britney Spears Could Be Engaged After Her Tour Ends Apparently three times really may be the charm in this case. Britney Spears may be walking down the isle with her boyfriend and manager, Jason Trawick. Rumor has it that when Spears wraps up her Femme Fatale tour, Trawick will finally pop the big question after years of dating. According to RadarOnline, Spears is under a conservetorship, which simply means her father is in charge of her financial assets and well being. If Spears decides to get married, her father’s lawyer will have to sign off on the union. Spear’s family and two sons, Sean Preston and Jayden James, love Trawick and can’t wait for him to join the family. How do you know when to pop the question? Cupid’s Advice: Proposing can be nerve racking, no matter how long you’ve been dating your partner. Fear of rejection and long time commitment can put an engagement on hold. Here are some ways to know you’re ready: 1. Family: If your family is crazy about your partner, then he or she is likely a keeper. Do either of you have children? If you have already begun to raise kids as a team, it might be time to make it official. 2. You find yourself looking at rings: Talking about marriage and kids is one thing, but actually window shopping or surfing the net for a ring may mean that your ready to take the next step in your relationship. 3. Commitment: An engagement means a commitment to each other, and the ring lets other men and women know that your partner is happily taken.

  • In the Transition from Stage to Arena, Live Music Is Remade

Intimate Live Girls Benjamin Halligan Keywords: aura, intimacy, kissing, authenticity, liveness, social media, spectacle, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Terry Richardson, Peter Gabriel Abstract: The arena concert requires a particular type of liveness of performance in order to transcend impersonal mass entertainment. Liveness here looks to authenticity and happenstance, privileges personal communications and seeks to live in the moment, and in this way the live performance then meets and matches or even surpasses the virtual life of the artist or group. The concert must be both mass spectacle and an individual and singular experience for those witnessing and participating in it. Without these latter essential attributes, which can be read as the auratic and authentic replacing the virtual, the arena concert falls short of ontological expectations of live music. In recent years the mise-en-scène of the arena concert has become calibrated to female artists with, seemingly, a concomitant feminisation of the event. In this, the space is often given over to intimacy, empathy, and presented as an insight into the life, and even philosophy, of the performer.

  • So You've Been Musically Shamed
WILLIAM CHENG Dartmouth College Email: [email protected] So You’ve Been Musically Shamed ABSTRACT In July 2014, an anonymous source leaked the raw audio of Britney Spears’s confessional ballad “Alien.” Haters pounced on this star’s denuded voice, gleefully seizing on the viral artifact as a smoking gun for Spears’s deficits and for the pop industry’s artistic fakeries more broadly. My paper situates this flashpoint of Spears-shaming within late-capitalist archives of public humiliation, cyberleaks, and the paternalistic scrutiny of women’s bodies and voices. KEYWORDS: critical theory, media studies, popular music A marketplace has emerged where public humiliation is a commodity and shame is an industry. How is the money made? Clicks. The more shame, the more clicks. – monica lewinsky1 “Poor Britney Spears” is not the beginning of a sentence you hear often uttered in my household. – tony hoagland, “poor britney spears,” beginning of the poem2 In the summer of 2014, the internet sprang a musical leak. Suddenly circulating on YouTube was a video featuring the allegedly raw, non-Auto-Tuned sounds of Brit- 3 ney Spears singing her new album track “Alien.” Spears’s voice in this recording was noticeably off-key and off-kilter, like some abject artifact meant to be overwritten, for- gotten, abandoned on the cutting room floor. In the video’s comment threads, view- ers’ strident pronouncements of aching ears and melting brains swirled in a chorus of mockery. Haters pounced on the star’s denuded voice and offered it as airtight 1.
