Cambridge University Press 978-0-521-83747-7 - Britain and the Dutch Revolt 1560–1700 Hugh Dunthorne Frontmatter More information Britain and the Dutch Revolt 1560–1700 England’s response to the Revolt of the Netherlands (1568–1648) has been studied hitherto mainly in terms of government policy, yet the Dutch struggle with Habsburg Spain affected a much wider commu- nity than just the English political elite. It attracted attention across Britain and drew not just statesmen and diplomats but also soldiers, merchants, religious refugees, journalists, travellers and students into the confl ict. Hugh Dunthorne draws on pamphlet literature to reveal how British contemporaries viewed the progress of their near neigh- bours’ rebellion, and assesses the lasting impact which the Revolt and the rise of the Dutch Republic had on Britain’s domestic history. The book explores affi nities between the Dutch Revolt and the British civil wars of the seventeenth century – the fi rst major challenges to royal authority in modern times – showing how much Britain’s chang- ing commercial, religious and political culture owed to the country’s involvement with events across the North Sea. HUGH DUNTHORNE specializes in the history of the early modern period, the Dutch revolt and the Dutch republic and empire, the his- tory of war, and the Enlightenment. He was formerly Senior Lecturer in History at Swansea University, and his previous publications include The Enlightenment (1991) and The Historical Imagination in Nineteenth-Century Britain and the Low Countries

  • The Netherlands After the Spanish Armada Campaign of 1588
THE GROWTH OF A NATION; THE NETHERLANDS AFTER THE SPANISH ARMADA CAMPAIGN OF 1588 Dr. J.C.A. SCHOKKENBROEK Director del Scheepuarrthuseum de Amsterdan Introduction The Dutch historian Robert Fruin, at the time professor at Leyden University, was one of the first scholars who at the end of the nineteenth century paid special attention to the developments in the Low Countries during the decade 1588-1598. In his publication (Tien Jaren), Fruin tries to indicate that the years after 1588 have been of crucial importance to the development of the young Republic of the United Netherlands. His epos is one about "progress and victory" (1). Fruin has not been the only one fascinated by this time frame. Many scholars have followed. In my lecture I will try to indicate that much of the seed of change during this decade had already been implanted during the summer of 1588, when a mighty Spanish fleet endangered the coasts of England and the Netherlands. The Spanish Armada campaign did not succeed, and Dutch seamen had a — granted relatively modest— share in its failure (2). The way Dutch politicians and mariners responded to the threat of the Spanish Armada, combined with the threat of Alexander Farnese, duke of Parma, with his troops in the northwestern part of Flanders, has been of decisive importance to the way changes in the Republic of the United Netherlands took place. In order to discuss these consequences of the failure of the Spanish Armada campaign in a proper way, I very briefly would like to talk about the Dutch participation in the events that have had such great influence on the way world history took its course.

  • The Political Culture of the Dutch Revolt Introduction
JEMH 11,4-5_2112_253-261 9/17/07 11:43 AM Page 253 THE POLITICAL CULTURE OF THE DUTCH REVOLT INTRODUCTION PETER ARNADE AND HENK VAN NIEROP The seventeen provinces that made up the sixteenth-century Habsburg Netherlands were a loosely jointed mosaic of territories, stitched together over a century and a half through hardball dynastic politics. Rich in cities and strategically placed in northwestern Europe, they were also a cornerstone of that period’s greatest monarchy. But as Alastair Duke has recently shown, there was no standard nomenclature at the time for describing these territories. The Low Countries were referred to by a range of terms, including Gallia Belgica, Germania inferior, and Nederland.1 This lack of a conceptual unity did not, however, stop the governor of Veere in Zeeland, Johan Junius de Jonghe, a member of William of Orange’s inner circle, from arguing in a 1574 defense of the political rights of the States General that the Netherlands had a shared culture, exemplified by the urban chambers of rhetoric and shooting guilds, two popular and unique civic sodalities in the Low Countries that made a large imprint on lay public life. For who does not know that the provinces of these Netherlands have always derived the greatest advantage from being united with each other? Had this union not been the origin of the old custom they have always observed, of assembling towns and provinces for the meeting of the archers and crossbowmen and bearers of other old-fashioned arms, which they call the landjuweel? Why else have the towns

  • Reconquista and Reconciliation in the Dutch Revolt: the Campaign of Governor-General Alexander Farnese (1578-1592)
Journal of Early Modern History 16 (2012) 1-22 brill.nl/jemh Reconquista and Reconciliation in the Dutch Revolt: The Campaign of Governor-General Alexander Farnese (1578-1592) Violet Soen Katholieke Universiteit Leuven Abstract The campaign in the Low Countries led by governor-general Alexander Farnese from Octo- ber 1578 onwards resulted in the reconquest of more cities for the King of Spain than had been achieved by any of his predecessors or successors. It serves here as a starting point for a contextual analysis of the relationship between the ruler and the city defiant during the Dutch Revolt, not only to cast new light on the oft-neglected and complex Spanish Habsburg policies, but also to understand the broader context of questions of resistance and reconciliation during the Dutch Revolt. Most capitulation treaties accorded by Farnese show at least four features at odds with the pattern of repression of urban revolts. The gov- ernor aimed at keeping the civic patrimony intact, he granted full pardon and oblivion, he conditionally restored urban privileges and he often felt obliged not to insist on immediate reconciliation with the Catholic Church. The divergent reactions to this Habsburg policy indicate that the Dutch Revolt showed striking features of a civil war, in which not only the conditions of revolt but also of reconciliation caused discord. Keywords Low Countries, Dutch Revolt, urban revolts, reconciliation, Alexander Farnese, Philip II, Habsburg dynasty, particularism, privileges Introduction In his recent and refreshing monograph on the political culture of the Dutch Revolt, Peter Arnade underlined (amongst many other things) how the urban centers of the Netherlands provided a resourceful laboratory for revolt against Philip II.

  • K Erkkappen in Nederland
