Infobestand Pelgrimsroute Stad Groningen. Hoogtekaart. Rood is hoog en blauw is laag. Stichting Pelgrimeren in Groningen www.spig.nl SPiG Facebook, E: [email protected] ’t Oldehof 49 9951 JX Winsum KvK 66778166 BTW nr. 8566.94.034 Bankrekening NL25.RBRB.0943.5716.42 Groningen. -

From the Routine of War to the Chaos of Peace: First
FROM THE ROUTINE OF WAR TO THE CHAOS OF PEACE: FIRST CANADIAN ARMY’S TRANSITION TO PEACETIME OPERATIONS – APRIL 23rd TO MAY 31st 1945 by Joseph Boates Bachelor of Arts in History, Royal Military College of Canada, 2005 A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master’s of History in the Graduate Academic Unit of History Supervisor: Lee Windsor, Ph.D., Gregg Centre, History Examining Board: Lisa Todd, Ph.D., History, Chair Lee Windsor, Ph.D., History Cindy Brown, Ph.D., History David Hofmann, Ph.D., Sociology This thesis is accepted by the Dean of Graduate Studies THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW BRUNSWICK May, 2020 ©Joseph Boates, 2020 ABSTRACT This project explores the dynamic shift from combat to stability-building operations made by Canadian soldiers in the Netherlands at the end of the Second World War. This thesis is a comparative investigation of the experiences of two Canadian infantry brigades and one armoured brigade. The findings highlight similarities and differences between each brigade as they shifted from combat to peacetime roles depending on their trade specialty and geographical location. These case studies bring to light how the same war ended in different ways, creating unique local dynamics for Canadian Army interaction with the defeated German Army, the Dutch population which had been subjugated for five years, and efforts to maintain the morale of Canadian soldiers between the end of hostilities and a time when they could go home. These situations and experiences demonstrate that the same war ended not with the stroke of a pen, but at different times and under very different circumstances throughout First Canadian Army’s area of responsibility in the Netherlands in 1945. -

IV OCTOBER, 1943 NO. 6 Shame of the Professors This blistering commentary 011 the professional obscurantists who dominate the so-called "orthodox" study of Shakespearean biography was originally printed in the July, 1937, issue of a Chicago booksellers' review called Reading and Collecting. It was written by Mr. George Frisbee of San Francisco, chemist, Shakespearean scholar, and one of the original proponents ol the Oxford-Shakespeare evidence in this country. A salty logician who never pulls his punches, Mr. Frisbee is something of an l!Jizabethan throwback himself, both in appearance and facility of picturesque expression. Within the past year he has donated his fine collection of books on Shake speare and the Oxford evidence to the San Francisco College for Women. As the periodical in which Mr. Frisbee's essay first appeared ceased publication shortly after that event, we are glad to reprint it for the edification of our own readers. III. Memorials of the Last Achievement, Illness, and Death of SIR PHILIP SIDNEY ; Communicated by G
III. Memorials of the last Achievement, Illness, and Death of SIR PHILIP SIDNEY ; communicated by G. F. BELTZ, Esq. K.H. F.S.A. Lancaster Herald, in a Letter to SIR HENRY ELLIS, K.H. FM.S. Secretary. Read 22d November, 1838. MY DEAR SIR, Heralds' College, Nov. 13, 1838. THE campaign in the Netherlands, of 1586, will be ever memorable in the English annals for the heroic death of Sir Philip Sidney, one of the brightest ornaments of the reign of Elizabeth. Of a person so illustrious, so deeply imbued with all the virtues and graces of the ancient chivalry, improved in him by science, illuminated by genius, and, above all, purified by a corrected sense and practice of religion, the most minute remains are of profound interest: and they were accordingly sought by his surviving contemporaries with a zeal and fervour which have scarcely abated after the lapse of nearly three centuries. The particular achievement, of which the glory was dearly purchased by the nation with a life of such high desert and promise, and the subsequent incidents, exhibiting the fortitude and magnanimity of the suffering hero, have been described, it may be thought with details sufficiently ample, by writers of the period, both English and foreign : yet, after a reference to all that has hitherto been gathered on the subject, a few gleanings, from authen- tic sources, may still be acceptable to students of our history. 28 Last Achievement, Illness, and Death THE skirmish under the walls of Zutphen, on Thursday the 22nd of Sep- tember in the above year, bears in all its features a lively resemblance to the Faits d'Armes of the Middle Age.
