Roy Morgan NZ Unemployment June Quarter (8.0%). Unemployment highest in Labour Electorates of , Manurewa, Mangere and North while lowest in National electorates of Selwyn, Kaikoura & Rangitata Roy Morgan New Zealand Unemployment is 8.0% in the June Quarter 2014 – this is considerably lower than when National won a second term in office at the 2011 NZ Election – NZ Unemployment in the December Quarter 2011 was 9.4%. The fall in unemployment over the past two- and-a-half years is a very positive indicator for Key and the National-led Government heading into the NZ Election. Analysing Roy Morgan NZ Unemployment by electorate over the period

since the last NZ Election (since December 2011) shows unemployment

has averaged 8.6% over this period. There is a clear trend that emerges E E when looking at the map – unemployment clearly higher in the more densely populated North Island than the more rural . Unemployment is highest in the Labour electorates of Manukau East (17.9%), Manurewa (17.4%), Mangere (15.9%) – all in the Auckland metropolitan area. Unemployment is also high in the new electorate of Kelston (13.0%) and the Labour electorates of Dunedin North (12.6%) and Mt. Roskill (11.7%). The National electorate with the highest unemployment is New Zealand’s northernmost electorate of Northland (11.6%).

E RELEASE E In contrast, unemployment is lowest in the South Island electorates of Selwyn (3.5%), Kaikoura (4.5%), Rangitata (4.7%), Clutha-Southland (4.8%), Waitaki (5.4%) and Waimakariri (5.5%) and the wealthy Auckland electorate of North Shore (4.9%) – all held by National. The only Labour electorate with consistently lower unemployment is Labour’s only rural electorate, the South Island electorates of West Coast Tasman (5.5%).
