Edmonton County School Educating our Community for Success

Spring Term 2 Thursday 4th April 2019

Dear Parents and carers,

Term ends today, 4th April 2019, after another busy few weeks at Edmonton County.

Year 11 students have been busy preparing for their practice examinations and received their results on Wednesday 3rd April 2019. This is the last big practice before the ‘real’ thing- it is vitally important that the students spend a good part of each day during the holiday on some school related work- using the workbooks is an ideal way to structure the revision.

Year 13 students have been similarly engaged as they prepare for important examinations that will lead them to university places and other opportunities- we wish them well! The task they have is a big one and they will need to spend their time really learning their work.

On 23 March 2109 we enjoyed a fantastic day celebrating our school’s Centenary. We were pleased to welcome the Deputy Lord Lieutenant as our guest. We also opened our Centenary Garden - this was opened by the Chair of the Old Scholars Association, our oldest scholar and the youngest child in the school. You will see that the daffodils we planted to celebrate our Centenary are starting to flower and this will be a long lasting reminder of what we have done over the past 100 years.

The end of term sees us saying farewell to colleagues. Mrs Hasnath-Karim leaves us to care for her growing family. She has been a dedicated Director of Inclusion and many parents have commented on her skills and care for their child. Her responsibilities next term will be led by Mr Miller. Mrs Tunay is relocating and we will be welcoming Mr Rose to the Mathematics Faculty in her place. Mrs Norton is leaving her role as Cover Supervisor and Turkish teacher. We thank our colleagues for their contribution to our school, and wish them happiness as they pursue their careers and interests.

Term recommences on Tuesday 23 April 2019.

On behalf of the Trustees, Governors and staff of Edmonton Trust I wish you a pleasant holiday.

Yours sincerely

Dr S M Tranter Executive Headteacher

Data Collection

It is vital the school has up-to-date contact information and addresses for your child. Please notify us of any changes as soon as you can to ensure that you receive written or electronic communication from the school and can be contacted in an emergency.

Parentpay

Please top up over the break to ensure your child has enough credit on their account for the beginning of term. Payments made on line will show almost immediately depending on the time of day the payment is made, however payments via Paypoint can take up to 48 hours to show on their account. If you are making a Paypoint payment at short notice, please give your child the receipt to verify the payment to enable them to continue using the canteen facility or provide a packed lunch until the account is in credit. In addition if your account is in arrears to ensure enough money is credited to cover the arrears to for your child to make purchase of their choice.

It has been highlighted some students are making purchases for their friends which parents may not be aware of. Please advise your child that their account should be for their use only.

Hayfever

Now that we are in Spring, this time of the year it can be very distressing if your child suffers from hay fever. Please remind your child to take their medication to avoid unnecessary suffering. It should be sufficient for them to take their antihistamine medication at night or before they come to school which would help reduce disruptions to lessons. A consent form can be obtained from the welfare office for eye drops and/or nasal sprays to be taken during the school day if necessary.

There is currently no cure for hay fever and it cannot be prevented, however things can be done to ease some of the symptom when the pollen count is high. Please see the NHS website: https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/ hay-fever for more information.

We wish you a very enjoyable Easter break.

Career News This term has gone with a steady flow of events, giving students the opportunity to engage and start thinking more proactively about future careers. Here is a snapshot of some of what has been happening…

Trips On the 30th January 15 Year 11 and 12 students participated in an Afro Caribbean Insight Day to encourage student from BAME (Black, African Ethnic Minority Background). The day consisted of different activities taster sessions in subjects they would consider studying at university and listening to real life experience from current student and their journey so far.

7th February nine Year 10 students from Edmonton County School joined with students from Bishop Stopford and on a trip to St Peter’s College Oxford. Throughout the day the students were introduced to OXPLORE which is an educational tool that breaks down and explores some of the big questions. A trip to the English Faculty had students working together and debating on whether books should have an age rating; great seeing them in action…

19th March Year 10 Academic Carousel Trip, led again by St Peter College hosted by . This was an opportunity for another 21 students to engage and understand the intellectual processes required for higher academic study. Majority of students found the day useful, for a few the level required was a little too much, however gave insight into what studying at an Oxbridge university would require.

Mayors Award for Science – 26th March 2019 Two of our outstanding Year 12 Biology students Mayo Moustafa and Maryama Sharif Ali were invited to participate in this year’s Mayor Award for Science at Middlesex University. The day started with a slight hitch as students almost missed the coach following wrong directions!! Despite this the students took part in a lab based Biology competition, and although they did not win they had a really enjoyable day doing different experiments in amazing facilities.

Careers Assemblies This term saw the delivery a variety of assemblies around careers with Years 7, 8 and 12. In particular for Year 7 and 8 it was to get students to start thinking about the variety of jobs they can explore as it is not too early to start this process. As Year 8 are choosing their options next term it was important to emphasise picking the right subjects and a broad range as to avoid feeling stuck when it comes to making further choices in the future. It was also the opportunity to introduce students to career tools that would be helpful with making their choices like www.eClips-online.co.uk (password Edmon2017) BBC Bitesize and www.icould.com

Year 12 assembly was to get students to start thinking seriously about Work Experience which will be from the 8th -19th July 2019. This was also to encourage students to plan this well, be proactive and not leave it too late especially if the Work Experience they would like to do is quite specific. Below is one example of productivity of students who have already started this process. IAG NEWS

Allen and Overy – Law Work Experience Two Year 12 students Imran Omizzico and Jihan Ali applied to do Work Experience with Allen and Overy a prestigious Law firm in July. Traditional Turkish cuisine is one of the exam topics. In March 2019 the Year 12 students entered the kitchen to make traditional Turkish dishes, the goal was to get the students familiar with traditional Turkish cuisine. They were asked to create a recipe which included commonly used spices and write instructions using techniques used in the preparation of traditional Turkish cuisine. The students were encouraged to speak to their mothers and grandmothers to help them create authentic dishes using the knowledge of their forefathers.

The students were divided into three groups., they brought a variety of spices and ingredients. The first group made ‘Su Boregi ‘, the second group made ‘Sigara Boregi’ and the third a desert and Turkish coffe. The result was that they were all able to make delicious Turkish food!
