This document serves as a data dictionary for the existing vegetation, historical vegetation, and potential natural vegetation databases, as described below: • Interpretation of aerial photography acquired in 1995, 1996, and 1997 was used to characterize existing (current) conditions. The 1996 and 1997 photography was obtained after cessation of the Bull and Summit wildfires in order to characterize post-fire conditions. The database name is: 97veg. • Interpretation of late-1930s and early-1940s photography was used to characterize historical conditions. The database name is: 39veg. • The potential natural vegetation was determined for each polygon in the analysis -

Conley, Director Cooperative Challenge Cost-share Project Idaho Panhandle National Forests Idaho Department of Fish and Game ABSTRACT Treeless summits and ridges in the otherwise densely forested mountains of northern Idaho, have a relatively unique flora compared with surrounding communities. Although small in area, these subalpine parks add greatly to the biotic diversity of the regional landscape and are habitats for several vascular taxa considered rare in Idaho. I conducted a floristic inventory of 32 parks in the mountains of the Coeur d'Alene River drainage and adjacent portions of the St. Joe drainage. The project is a cooperative one between the Idaho Department of Fish and Game's Conservation Data Center and the Idaho Panhandle National Forest. The subalpine park flora contains 151 taxa representing 97 genera in 34 families. Carex are surprisingly depauperate, in terms of both numbers and cover, as is the alien flora, which is comprised of only three species. I discovered populations of five rare species, including Carex xerantica, which is here reported for Idaho for the first time. Other rare species include Astragalus bourgovii, Carex californica, Ivesia tweedyi, and Romanzoffia sitchensis. Stevens Peak is the highest summit and is phytogeographically unique in the study area. It contains habitat for six taxa occurring nowhere else in the study area, all having high-elevation cordilleran or circumboreal affinities. -

Conley, Director Bonneville Power Administration Project # 92-069 SUMMARY During the 1993 and 1994 field seasons, wildlife, habitat/vegetation, timber, and other resources were systematically inventoried at Craig Mountain to provide Fish and Game managers with information needed to draft an ecologically-based management plan. The results of the habitat/vegetation portion of the inventory are contained in this report. Our field investigations concentrated on, but were not limited to, Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) and Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) lands. Our responsibilities for the Craig Mountain project included: 1) vegetation data collection, and vegetation classification, to help produce a GIS-generated vegetation map, 2) to determine the distribution and abundance of rare plant populations and make recommendations concerning their management, and 3) to establish a vegetation monitoring program to evaluate the effects of Fish and Game management actions, and to assess progress towards meeting habitat mitigation goals. A steep 4000 foot elevational gradient, highly dissected, complex topography, and variable edaphic conditions have created a diverse array of habitats at Craig Mountain. The rolling highlands dominated by conifer forest are sharp contrast to the rugged canyon faces supporting grassland-dominated and associated shrubfield, riparian and woodland vegetation. This diverse landscape provides important habitat for many game and non-game wildlife species. The diverse environmental conditions also provide for high floristic diversity at Craig Mountain. -

Checklist of Montana Vascular Plants June 1, 2011 By Scott Mincemoyer Montana Natural Heritage Program Helena, MT This checklist of Montana vascular plants is organized by Division, Class and Family. Species are listed alphabetically within this hierarchy. Synonyms, if any, are listed below each species and are slightly indented from the main species list. The list is generally composed of species which have been documented in the state and are vouchered by a specimen collection deposited at a recognized herbaria. Additionally, some species are included on the list based on their presence in the state being reported in published and unpublished botanical literature or through data submitted to MTNHP. The checklist is made possible by the contributions of numerous botanists, natural resource professionals and plant enthusiasts throughout Montana’s history. Recent work by Peter Lesica on a revised Flora of Montana (Lesica 2011) has been invaluable for compiling this checklist as has Lavin and Seibert’s “Grasses of Montana” (2011). Additionally, published volumes of the Flora of North America (FNA 1993+) have also proved very beneficial during this process. The taxonomy and nomenclature used in this checklist relies heavily on these previously mentioned resources, but does not strictly follow anyone of them. The Checklist of Montana Vascular Plants can be viewed or downloaded from the Montana Natural Heritage Program’s website at: http://mtnhp.org/plants/default.asp This publication will be updated periodically with more frequent revisions anticipated initially due to the need for further review of the taxonomy and nomenclature of particular taxonomic groups (e.g. Arabis s.l ., Crataegus , Physaria ) and the need to clarify the presence or absence in the state of some species. -

Report on Allium Columbia Basin Scientific Assessment Project
1 REPORT ON ALLIUM COLUMBIA BASIN SCIENTIFIC ASSESSMENT PROJECT BY Dale W. McNeal Professor University of the Pacific Stockton, California 95211 Allium is-a primarily north temperate genus of between 600 and 700 species (Stern, 1991). In North America the genus is represented by 84 species. As-a general rule the species in the new world have a base chromosome number of x = 7 while those in the old world are x = 8 or 9. Only two species in North America, Allium schoenonrasum L. and A_.- tricoccum D. Solander are of the x = 8 group and A_. schoenoorasum is the only species in common between the old world and the new. Allium has been present in North America since at least the Tertiary (Raven & Axelrod, 1978) and has been subject to distributional displacement due to climatic changes several times during this period. At present the centers of distribution of the genus are thought to be the California Floristic Provence with about 44 species and Texas with about 14. The Western United States, particularly the states of Washington, Oregon, and California have by far the largest concentration of species, with 60 of the 84 North American species occurring within their boundaries. All Allium species are cryptophytes, arising from underground bulbs which, in.a few cases are attached to rhizomes. In the vast majority of species in the western U.S. vegetative growth occurs in the late winter or early spring, often under the snowpack: Flowering occurs shortly after snowmelt and seed set is complete before the soil dries out in the late spring or early summer. -
