Ommetje Romeins Maastricht op 30 april 2018 door Maureen van Brandenburg In het teken van de Romeinenweek werd gistermiddag door IVN Natuureducatie Limburg het Ommetje Maastricht georganiseerd. Toeristen, maar ook bewoners van de stad wandelden met IVN-landschapsgids Carlo Poolen mee om meer te weten te komen over het Romeins verleden van Maastricht. In het bijzonder werd aandacht besteed aan de Romeinse weg die dwars door de stad heeft gelopen: de Via Belgica. De wandeling startte bij Derlon Hotel, waar we na een korte introductie afdaalden naar de bijzondere museumkelder. In de vorige eeuw werden hier de resten gevonden van een Romeins heiligdom, dat door de gastvrijheid van de eigenaren van het hotel nog steeds toegankelijk is voor bezoekers. Buiten hebben we het oudste fundament van de Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe-basiliek ontdekt: de grote, grijze hoekstenen die op het eerste oog doodgewoon lijken. Toch zijn deze waarschijnlijk afkomstig van het fort dat de Romeinen toendertijd hier hebben gebouwd. Vanwege zijn kennis over het landschap, lichtte de gids toe dat deze Naamse steen ook voor veel andere gebouwen in Maastricht, maar ook Luik en Aachen is gebruikt. Even later stonden we bovenop het kleine bruggetje over de Jeker in het stadspark. Hier stonden we stil bij de naamgeving van Maastricht: volgens velen is deze afgeleid van het Romeinse Mosa Trajectum of Traiectum ad Mosam. Maar of dat echt zo is, weten we niet! Traiectum betekent ‘doorgetrokken’ en zou duiden op de weg die door de brug de Maas zou overtrekken. Romeinse geschriften waarin deze naam vermeld staat, ontbreken echter. Via de Hoge Brug en Plein 1992 liepen we door de Rechtstraat. -

In 2018 is gestart met het formeren van een werkgroep van betrokken ketenpartners om gezamenlijk te onderzoeken welke acties ondernomen worden en nog ondernomen kunnen worden om seksuele intimidatie tegen te gaan. De deelnemers aan de werkgroep zijn: - GGD Zuid-Limburg, - Mondriaan Maastricht-Heuvelland, - Trajekt, - Centrum Seksueel Geweld Limburg, - Consent Matters en - Rutgers (Rutgersstichting). - Vanuit de gemeente nemen medewerkers vanuit communicatie, zorg en veiligheid, publieke gezondheid en geweld hoort nergens thuis, deelgenomen. Deze samenwerking heeft in 2019 geleid tot een grotere samenwerking en afstemming tussen de deelnemende partners hetgeen geleid heeft tot een meer samenhangende signalering en aanpak van problematiek binnen de eigen organisaties en doelstellingen. -

STADRALLY MAASTRICHT Stadswandelingen door de binnenstad van Maastricht Dit document bevat twee uitdagende stadswandelingen door de historische binnenstad van Maastricht. De stadsrally is gericht op Duitse scholieren die Nederlands leren op school. Let op: deze stadrally omvat twee verschillende routes. It was first produced in the early nineteenth century, finding architectural uses in the latter part of the century. By the 1960s, it was broadly employed to clad buildings in the form of frames, panels and screens. Because it was a new and extensively useful material, producers believed that its identity must be controlled. Focusing on the marketing mechanisms of Alcoa, Reynolds and Kawneer in the decades surrounding World War II, this dissertation examines the way in which commercial aluminum cladding was marketed as both instrumental in modernization and an image of modernity. Producers claimed that aluminum possessed properties which they believed underpinned the agency of aluminum to enact specific advantages for buyers. Properties that were identified by promoters, such as its relative lightness, ductility and particular visual characteristics were marketed within the context of capitalism as the ability of aluminum to reduce building cost, increase profit and reflect beauty. In turn, these advantages were promoted as enacting prosperity for the buyer and the commercial districts in which aluminum cladding was deployed. -

The Demise and Flight of the Great Jewish Scientific Community at the Hands of the Nazis, Through the Eyes of One of the Founders of Modern Chemistry, Georg Bredig Tragic and inspiring stories, many from inside detention camps, some from people who did not make it, unpublished and a decade in scope, containing more than a thousand documents, many deep in content and lengthy A huge archive showing how he and his family worked to save prominent Jewish scientists, sometimes successfully, sometimes not, as well as how they fled and what life was like on the inside In the late 1880s, a monumental change came to the world of chemistry, one that would have broad significance for our world today. This included the creation of complicated compounds like plastics, to power generators like batteries, a range of pharmaceuticals, and components of nuclear weapons. Physical chemistry - the study of how matter behaves on a molecular and atomic level and how chemical reactions occur - dates from this period. This branch of chemistry dates from 1887, with Wilhelm Ostwald’s publication of Zeitschrift fur Physicalische Chemie, a journal devoted to that subject. The leaders of the European school were Swede Svante Arrhenius, German Wilhelm Ostwald, and Dutchman Jacobus van't Hoff. All three of these men would be awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Van’t Hoff and Arrhenius were 1st and 3rd, and the latter would be the first and long-time director of the Nobel Institute. They are giants in the scientific community, contemporaries of Albert Einstein and Max Planck. And in the midst of it all was Georg Bredig, one of the world’s first physical chemists, a German who worked with van’t Hoff in Amsterdam, Arrhenius in Stockholm, Einstein in Zurich, and Ostwald in Karlsruhe and Leipzig.
