ms stubnitz institutional presentation Rostock 2009 the mission Since its inception in 1994, Stubnitz has been and remains a unique cross-cultural project of its kind, committed to the research and documentation of the contemporary music and performance art across different European regions, for the benefit of the artists, their audiences and cultural exchange. As the Culture Ark, it is our mission to chronicle the innovation and diversity of contemporary youth culture and communicate it to the present and future generations. Doing so, we keep the maritime cultural heritage of Stubnitz the ship, and the millennia-old tradition of maritime cultural exchange alive and accessible to the people. the profile Motorschiff Stubnitz e.V. is a registered non-profit association, which operates an 80m former freeze & transport vessel of the GDR high seas fishing fleet. Built in 1964 at the Volkswerft Stralsund, MS Stubnitz is the sole surviving specimen of its type and is listed as a Monument of German Shipbuilding by the city of Rostock. In 1993 it was transformed into a mobile platform for music, cultural production, documentation and communication. The three converted cargo holds have excellent acoustic qualities, can accommodate around 700 people in total and are ideally suited as venues for live music, exhibitions, performances and media art. The main part of the maintenance and cultural work is done on a voluntary basis, the artists and coworkers lodged and fed on board. Since 1994 Stubnitz has visited 15 different ports across 10 European countries, researching and presenting innovative youth culture and forming partnerships with local culture organizations and promoters. More than 430 000 people have attended more than 1500 events hosted by Stubnitz. More than 3000 live performances by artists from 30 countries all over the world have been documented and preserved in an on-board audio/video archive. Each performance is recorded by 2-3 cameras, live mix and biophonic audio equipment, then edited and catalogued in an on-board multi-media lab. Stubnitz maintains a file server and a web site where fragments of this vast archive material are now gradually being offered for public viewing. We are constantly looking for new joint projects with authorities of European port cities, local and international culture organizations, to bring this fascinating environment and a diverse cultural program to the full access of the local public. the team Name Year Country Department Supervisory Board: Angelica Voland 1944 Germany Christel Fuchs 1953 Germany Operations: Axel Brodzinski 1968 Germany administration, head of the Board Anne Runge 1983 Germany administration, boardmember Falk Rugies 1979 Germany media, boardmember Björn Iggensen 1976 Germany IT, boardmember Ronald Koch 1975 Germany media, catering, boardmember Gernot Labahn 1983 Germany media technology, boardmember Manfred Bendrich 1951 Germany technical manager, chief engineer Werner Burmeister 1963 Germany naval engineer, corrosion prevention Cofounder and Manager: Urs Blaser 1960 Switzerland administration, events, security Coworkers: Jörg Tessenow 1970 Germany electrical engineer Carl Weidner 1975 Netherlands booking, media Christian Schulle 1980 Germany welder Matti Romey 1977 Germany metalworker Pablo Dudenhoefer 1980 Germany metalworker Trainees: Andreas Gerdel 1983 Germany education in cultural administration Madlen Koark 1981 Germany education in cultural administration Florian Hübel 1987 Germany education in event technology Joachim Gerdel 1987 Germany education in event technology Moritz Fink, 1989 Germany education in event technology Volunteers: Ulrike Bartels 1982 Germany merchandising Claudia Blank 1984 Germany hospitality Mary Koss, 1985 Germany assistant Aaron Meier 1981 Switzerland media assistant Anja Bresemann 1985 Germany assistant Bram Graafland 1982 Netherlands assistant Daniel Zimmer 1977 Germany photographer Jeremie Foulquier 1987 France archive work Valters Verners 1973 Latvia marketing investigator National Service Interns: Christian Gubalke 1989 Germany assistant Fabian Ketzler 1989 Germany assistant Volunteers, the Crew: Günter Bedrich 1941 Germany chief engineer Reinhard Zietz 1947 Germany mechanic Peter Paul 1941 Germany captain Heinz Scherbinske 1943 Germany captain Sven Herberg 1966 Germany navigational officer Wolfhard Rust 1954 Germany engineer officer and many others… the history Year City Period Organizer Event Documented Visitors Visitors Total Performances 1994 St. Petersburg Jul Stubnitz / Ost-West Kontakt Art in Transit Malmö Aug City of Malmö Baltic Jubilee Hamburg Aug-Sep Stubniz / Kulturbehörde Das Boot in Hamburg Hamburg Rostock Sep-Dec 11 1 708 1995/97 Rostock 315 36 552 1998 Rostock Jan-May 55 13 078 Stockholm May-Aug Nursery & Nursery Injection; 103 8 676 City of Stockholm Stockholm European Culture Capital 1998 Rostock Aug-Dec 90 5 396 27 150 1999 Rostock 210 15 536 2000 Rostock Jan-May 43 6 607 Hamburg May-Jul Zentralkommitee Der 94.
