Alabama President Dr. Stuart R. bell The Board of Trustees of The University of Alabama System named Dr. Stuart R. Bell president of The University of Alabama on June 18, 2015. A nearly 30-year veteran of higher education, Bell was previously executive vice president and provost at Louisiana State University, where he served as both the chief academic officer and the chief operating officer of LSU. These responsibilities at LSU included oversight of all academic, research and student programs and coordination of related fiscal operations. “The University of Alabama is such a vibrant community,” said Bell. “I’m excited about UA and its positive impact on our community and the nation, and I look forward to the even greater achievements that we will seek in working together.” “I’m honored by this selection and the confidence displayed in my abilities, and I look forward to learning and listening to others about our campus, our programs and the aspirations we have for this great university.

  • Division I Women's Swimming & Diving Championships
DIVISION I WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS RECORDS BOOK 2015 Championship 2 History 5 All-Time Results 19 2015 CHAMPIONSHIP HIGHLIGHTS California takes its fourth title in the past seven years: Consistency is everything. One national championship is nice, but can be written off as a fluke if if the success is not sustained or predicated. To be in the conversation year in and year out, as Cal women’s swimming and diving head coach Teri McKeever puts it, is the key. For years, McKeever worked to find that success. It came gradually. She was in her seventh year with the Golden Bears before the squad was able to crack the top five in the NCAA Division I national championship meet. It got better, a lot better in fact. Approximately $10 million in donor funds over the year built facilities and scholarship funds suitable for a championship-caliber program. Only once the 2005-06 season has Cal finished as low as fifth in the nationals. And since winning its first national championship in 2009, the Golden Bears have finished no worse than third. “We started to have some success, and I think quality people attract quality people,” McKeever said. “I am very proud of the consistency of the program. To me, that’s the sign of a program ... a philosophy ... a belief ... that a group of women can come in and be their best year after year.” This year’s national crown is Cal’s fourth in the past seven seasons. Consistency? McKeever and the Golden Bears have it all right.

You will also find the standings of the first three places in all events for men and women at the Olympic Games followed by several classifications which are listed either by the number of titles or medals by swimmer or National Federation. It should be noted that these standings only have an historical aim but no sport signification because the comparison between the achievements of swimmers of different generations is always unfair for several reasons: 1. The period of time. The Olympic Games were not organised in 1916, 1940 and 1944 2. The evolution of the programme.

  • ROWDY GAINES: a WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE by Mark Muckenfuss
ROWDY GAINES: A WALK DOWN MEMORY LANE By Mark Muckenfuss Check out the January issue of Swimming World Magazine and read all about Rowdy Gaines, past and present, in Emily Mason's "Still Kicking" column. In 1984, Rowdy won the 100 meter free at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Following is the story of Rowdy's Olympic triumph as it appeared in Swimming World back in September 1984: Sentimental favorite Rowdy Gaines polished off the end of his individual career with gold, achieving what he has so many times failed to do in the past few years: coming back in a final heat with a time faster than in the morning prelims. What looked like the end of a great American comeback story was tarnished, however, by a controversial start that left a bad taste in the mouths of many of the other competitors, particularly Australian Mark Stockwell, who won the silver, and American Mike Heath, who finished fourth. After congratulating Gaines on his win, Heath, who was caught off balance on the start and was the last swimmer off the blocks, struck at the water with his fist and angrily left the pool. He reportedly said he could have gotten a better start at a novice meet. The Australians filed a formal protest. Peter Evans, Stockwell's teammate, was furious. "You were robbed, mate," he told Stockwell as the medal winners walked to the awards presentation. The complaint was that the start was too quick. The Australians said official Francisco Silvestri of Panama fired the starting gun before all the swimmers were set.
