Notes on Trichoferus Arenbergeri with Description of Male (Coleoptera, Cerambycidae)

BISCACCIANTI (*) and DANIELE SECHI (**) Trichoferus arenbergeri Holzschuh, 1995 was described from Sar- dinia based upon three females collected in the following localities: “2 km westl, Siniscola [NU], Monte Albo” (locus typicus), “Siniscola (Nuoro)” and “Ozieri” [SS] (Holzschuh 1995: 15). The male of this taxon is still unknown, as well as its biology, ecology and preimaginal stages. During several surveys carried out from 2002 to 2007 at differ- ent sites in southern Sardinia, several specimens (larvae, pupae and adults of both sexes) of this poorly known longhorn beetle were col- lected and observed. The aim of this paper is to describe the male morphology, the biology and the habitat of the species, with a discus- sion about its relationship to other congeneric species. Larval and pu- pal morphology will be treated in a further contribution (Biscaccianti & Di Giulio unpublished data). Specimens examined are listed from North to South and from East to West; they are preserved in the collections listed below. Measures of specimens are taken in the following way. Total length: from the forehead to the apex of elytra; elytral length: from humerus to elytral apex; elytral width: maximum width at humeri; tarsal joint length: from the base of joint (excluding articulation) to the apical margin, or to the midpoint of a line tangential to the apex of the lobes (for bilobed joints); tarsal joint width: maximum width. [email protected] www.luigidemarzo.eu SUBJECTS • Anatomical diversity of the Insect Malpighian tubules is minutely documented in textbooks of Entomology (e.g., Berlese, 1909); • it involves shape, length, number of units and connection of the apexes; • in Coleoptera, it expresses with both the cryptonephridial type of members of the series Cucujiformia, where apices of all tubes connect to the midgut, • and the “type ansé” reported by Paulian (1988) for some Adephaga and Staphylinidae, where tubules are handle-like do. • Modified Malpighian tubules of Coleoptera include enlarged sectors, which workers relate to colonies of symbiotic microorganisms (Buchner, 1965; Nardon & Grenier, 1989). • A new instance of modification is described in the present note. • This is dedicated to the memory of the clever entomologist, Prof. Baccio Baccetti, who provided several anatomical, histological and histochemical details of the Malpighian tubules for a curculionid beetle (Mazzi & Baccetti, 1956). MATERIAL AND METHODS • Both adults and full-grown larvae of Mastigus pilifer Kraatz were obtained by sifting the litter in a forest of Southern Italy. • Adults were collected in October, i.e., in the oviposition period; larvae were found in November, when they disperse in the litter, as known from the literature (De Marzo, 1983). • Internal organs were studied in fresh preparations; they were separated from specimens anaesthetized with ethyl acetate vapours and dissected in salt solution (NaCl 0,9%). • Content of the Malpighian tubules was inspected with a 40x phase- contrast lens. -

La coexistencia de diversas especies planteaba un probable problema de competencia interespecífica, por lo que se realizaron observaciones sobre el régimen trófico de cada especie y los órganos vegetales preferentes en donde desarrollan parte de su ciclo biológico. Las observaciones permitieron averiguar determinados comportamientos tróficos mal conocidos hasta la fecha y detalles sobre sus ciclos biológicos, evidenciando los mecanismos usados para evitar la competencia interespecífica en el mismo hábitat. (Apiaceae) Abstract A study of the beetle fauna of the air organs of the apiaceous Eryngium campestre L. in the province of Cadiz is carried out. The coexistence of various species posed a probable problem of interspecific competition, so observations were made on the trophic regime of each species and the preferred plant organs where they develop part of their life cycle. The observations made it possible to find out certain badly known trophic behaviors to date and details about their biological cycles, showing the mechanisms used to avoid interspecific competition in the same habitat. -

Con la inclusión de la literatura disponible, se citan 175 especies y subespecies (11.43% son endemismos comunes a las otras islas de las Azores), repartidas per 16 órdenes y 83 familias, de las que 32 son nuevas citas para la isla de Corvo.
