PECK S'tate Botanist Bulletin 94 BOTANY 8 REPORT OF THE STATE BOTANIST 1904 Specimens of plants for the state herbarium have been collected in the counties of Albany, Columbia, Essex, Fulton, Genesee, Hamilton, Lewis, Livingston, Madison, Monroe, Otsego, Rensselaer, .Saratoga, Schenectady, Suffolk, Tompkins, Warren and Wyoming. Specimens have been contributed that were collected in the ·counties of Albany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Dutchess, Essex, 'Greene, Hamilton, Herkimer, Monroe, Oneida, Onondaga, Ontario, -Orleans, Richmond, Saratoga, Suffolk, Tioga, Tompkins and Washington. The number of species of which specimens have been added to the herbarium is 321. Of these, 72 were not previously represented in it and the remaining 249 are now better or more completely represented. Of the 72 species, 9 are considered new or previously undescribed species. These are all fungi. Descriptions of them will be given in the following pages. The names of the species of which specimens have been added to the herbarium are given -under the title "Plants added to the herbarium." The names of those who have contributed specimens and the names of the species represented by their respective contributions .are given under the title "Contributors and their contributions." Many of the contributed specimens belong to extralimital species. .some of the specimens of mosses and hepatics contributed by Prof. John Macoun, botanist of the Geological and Natural History 'Survey of Canada, represent species found in the extreme western .and northwestern part of British America. In some cases, speci­ mens sent for identification have been in good condition and desir­ .able for the herbarium. These have been preserved and credited to the sender as a contribution. The number of contributors :is 54. 6 NEW YORK STATE MUSEU:\f In a third chapter, under the heading "Species not before re­ ported," are the names of species new to our flora. This contains the names of a few species that had previously been recorded and were represented in the herbarium as varieties of other species, but they have now been raised to specific rank and are herein recorded as good species. Remarks concerning habitats, descrip­ tions of new species, and the time of collecting the specimens, are given under their respectiyc species. The number of species re­ corded is 80. Of these 35 belong to the genus Crataegus. In a fourth chapter, bearing the title" Remarks and observa­ tions," there is a record of nc,',! stations of rare plants, descriptions of new varieties, remarks concerning peculiar or distinguishing features of certain plants and new names given to some species as required by the law of priority. The number of identifications of species made for correspondents and others, who have sent or brought specimens of plants to the office of the botanist for this purpose, is 675. The number of ?er­ sons for whom identifications haye been made is 100. The number of species of mushrooms that have been tried and approved as edible is 8. Descriptions of these and of a new variety of a species previously found to be edible constitute a chapter entitled" Edible fungi." Colored figures of natural size have been prepared of all these and placed on 7 plates, octavo size. The number of New York species and varieties of edible mushrooms previously reported is '53. Colored fig·ures of 5 new species are given on 3 similar plates. The study of our Crataegus flora has been continued, and many specimens of trees and shrubs of this genus have been collected. The specific identity of many of these has not yet been determined. Rochester and its vicinity have furnished plants from which 3 I species of Crataegus have been described by Prof. C. S. Sargent. Many of these were found within the limits of the city parks. By the wise and careful forethought of Mr C. C. Laney, superintend­ ent of parks, lahels have been placed on the particular thorn trees and shrubs which furnished the material from which the descrip­ tions of the several new species were derived. Type trees, in a genus in which many species resemble each other as closely as they do in the genus Crataegus, possess a peculiar value and importance and it is very fortunate in this instance, where so many type trees and shrubs grow in such close proximity to each other and where they can be protected, that they have been properly labeled with their botanical names.     CRATAEGUS IN OHIO WITH DESCRIPTION OF ONE NEW SPECIES ERNEST J. PALMER Webb City, Missouri This review of Crataegus in Ohio has been made in cooperation with the Ohio Flora Committee of the Ohio Academy of Science as a contribution to their forth- coming flora of the state. Many of the universities and colleges of the state have sent collections of herbarium specimens to me for examination, and information has been drawn from these and other sources including some private collections. The large collection in the herbarium of the Ohio State University, covering most of the state, has been particularly helpful. Other institutions sending large col- lections were the University of Cincinnati, Oberlin College, Miami University, and Defiance College. Dr. E. Lucy Braun also sent many interesting collections from her private herbarium; and she has given invaluable assistance in outlining the work and in cooperating with it in many ways. In addition to the larger collections mentioned above, specimens have been received from Ohio University, Dennison University, Kent State University, Antioch College, and from the private collection of Mr. John Guccion of Cleveland. Dr. Gerald B. Ownbey also sent a number of collections from Ohio deposited in the herbarium of the University of Minnesota. The large amount of material from Ohio in the her- barium of the Arnold Arboretum, Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, was also checked, including duplicates of many of the collections seen in Ohio herbaria, and also fuller collections made by R. E. Horsey in many parts of the state, and by F. J. Tyler, Harry Crowfoot, and C.

This popular ornamental has showy pink or white flowers in spring and colorful berry-like fruit. Some species also have long thorns that provide protection for wildlife but may be a hazard in the landscape–thornless cultivars are available. Like other rosaceous plants, hawthorns are sus- ceptible to a number of diseases including fire blight, scab, leaf spot and several types of rust. Insect pests include lace bugs and leaf miners. DISEASES Cedar Rust diseases on hawthorn, which include hawthorn rust and quince rust, are caused by sev- eral fungi in the genus Gymnosporangium that spend part of their life cycle on Eastern red cedar (Juni- perus virginiana) and other susceptible junipers, and another part of their life cycle on plants in the rose family, especially Malus and Crataegus. Since two hosts are required for these fungi to complete their life cycle, one way to reduce disease problems is to avoid planting alternate hosts near each other. Hawthorn Rust, caused by Gymnosporangium globosum, is a significant concern for Crataegus spp. in the Northeast (7). Hawthorns are the main broadleaved host for this rust, and yellow-orange leaf spots are the most common symptom. (8). With severe infections, foliage may turn bright yellow and drop prematurely (15).

To help determine the most appropriate tree species for various urban forest functions, a database of 1,585 tree species (see Appendix A) was developed by the USDA Forest Service in cooperation with Horticopia, Inc (2007). Information from this database can be used to select tree species that provide desired functional benefits. This information, in conjunction with local knowledge on species and site characteristics, can be used to select tree species that increase urban forest benefits, but also provide for long-tree life with minimal maintenance. Purpose of Species Selection Program The purpose of the species selection program is to provide a relative rating of each tree species at maturity for the following tree functions, based on a user’s input of the importance of each function (0-10 scale): • Air pollution removal • Air temperature reduction • Ultraviolet radiation reduction • Carbon storage • Pollen allergenicity • Building energy conservation • Wind reduction • Stream flow reduction This program is designed to aid users in selecting proper species given the tree functions they desire. Methods Tree Information Information about the plant dimensions, and physical leaf characteristics (e.g., leaf size, type, and shape) of 5,380 trees, shrubs, cactus and palms were derived from the Horticopia database (www.horticopia.com).

It is not intended to be a complete species list for the region. The intended range for this vascular plant list is Ecoregions (Site Regions) 5E, 6E and 7E. i Nomenclature The nomenclature used for this listing of 2,532 plant species, subspecies and varieties, is in accordance with the Ontario Plant List (OPL), 1998 [see Further Reading for full citation]. This is the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resource’s publication which has been selected as the corporate standard for plant nomenclature. There have been many nomenclatural innovations in the past several years since the publication of the Ontario Plant List that are not reflected in this listing. However, the OPL has a listing of many of the synonyms that have been used recently in the botanical literature. The aim of the investigation was also to record changes in the host species, namely between the years 1985 and 2016, and to get an overview of the extent and degree of mistletoe infection on the most significant tree species present in the park. Furthermore, the occurrence of mistletoe across the developmental stages of woody species was monitored. Apart from taxonomic changes also the quantitative extent and the degree of infection reported in the last 31 years, and the impact on the development stages of woody plants in the past 20 years were analysed. Among the most frequently infected taxa are currently: Acer campestre, Acer platanoides, Acer pseudoplatanus, Crataegus monogyna, Robinia pseudoacacia, Tilia cordata and Tilia platyphyllos. The average share of infected specimens of the above host species amounts to 34.28%. A distinctive change in frequency and infection degree was recorded in the aggregate spectrum of hosts. The presence of mistletoe was recorded in a total of 1,362 specimens (almost 12% of the trees growing in the area).
