Steve Wynn & the Miracle 3 to Perform Dream Syndicate STEVE WYNN & THE MIRACLE 3 TO PERFORM DREAM SYNDICATE CLASSIC ALBUM IN LA & NYC Ronald Reagan makes a run at a second term as president, the Berlin Wall is still intact, Boy George tops the charts and has yet to spend a day in jail or collecting trash in lower Manhattan, MTV seems to be a fad that might just stick around, cell phones and the internet aren’t much more than space-age rumors alongside jet-packs and time travel. Most of the more dire predictions in George Orwell’s book haven’t come true. Yet. And the Dream Syndicate releases its second album “Medicine Show” Despite charting on the Billboard list of top LPs and topping the CMJ singles chart for 2 months, the album is met with mixed reviews in the US where the band’s debut album “The Days of Wine and Roses” had been a critical sensation. Overseas it was a different story. “Medicine Show” received the highest accolades across Europe and the UK (the album made the London Guardian’s “Top 40 Albums of the First 40 Years of Rock” list in the mid-90s), sowing the seeds for a career that has been strong for bandleader Steve Wynn to the present day Wynn and his band the Miracle 3 will commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the release of “Medicine Show” with 2 shows in New York City and Los Angeles where they will play the classic album from start to finish for the first time. The Miracle 3—Steve’s long-time band of Jason Victor, Dave Decastro and Linda Pitmon—did similar shows for “The Days of Wine and Roses” in 2001. “’Medicine Show’ is the weirdest, most idiosyncratic, nastiest, funniest and most revealing record the Dream Syndicate ever made,” said Wynn in the liner notes from the record’s 1991 reissue. “It’s also my favorite.” Don’t wait until 2034 to see this show. A level Music Areas of Study – Other Perspectives NB: updates to this document were made in April 2021 and these are highlighted in yellow. © artwork: Mark Bolitho | Origami photography Pearson Education Ltd/Justin Hoffman Introduction This qualification features a Component entitled Appraising. The purpose of this component is for students to develop their listening and appraising skills through the study of music across a variety of styles and genres. The content is grouped into six areas of study, containing either two or three set works. This component gives students the opportunity to reflect on, analyse and evaluate music in aural and/or written form. To achieve this objective, students need to use their knowledge and understanding of musical elements, context and language to make critical judgements about the repertoire and context of music within the areas of study. Students should also study a range of pieces beyond these set works. The suggested other musical pieces for each area of study (see Appendix 4 of the specification) provide students with breadth, enabling them to place their knowledge of musical elements, context and language in a wider context, and apply their knowledge and understanding to more pieces of music. The suggested other music can help students to relate their learning to music in the set works, but their study is not compulsory. Teachers can identify and teach other pieces of music to support their students’ learning. The following music and musicians are examples of how each of the areas of study can be approached from a diverse range of other perspectives. The pieces have been chosen to encourage students to think beyond the mainstream and over-represented composers and styles of music, and instead to consider alternative and less well-known types and origins of music.

Regardless of what your opinion about R.E.M. is, there's no denying that they shaped the face of alternative rock for years. Heck, they've basically been every kind of alternative rock band themselves. They spent their formative years as cult favorite college rockers. Then, they started attracting more and more attention until they were making music with genuine mainstream appeal. Between 1991 and 1992 alone, they released the folk- inspired Out of Time and the baroque Automatic For The People, making them easily the most successful band to attack the audiences of the early grunge era with both mandolins ("Losing My Religion") and string arrangements (A good chunk of Automatic ).

ThePsycheDeliaSmithPaisleyHeadArtSchools Alan Dunn Summer of love August 1967: During the first four days of the month, a depression moves from the Atlantic across Scotland to the North Sea. It is rather cool over most of the United Kingdom during these four days, with occasional rain giving way to thundery showers and long sunny periods on the 4th. (Monthly Weather Report of the Meteorological Office, Volume 84 Number 8). I am born in Glasgow on that 4th August 1967. Mix up the 1967 Summer of Love and it sounds like Are You Heart Pepper's Lonely Piper Club Band at the Gates of Dawn Experienced and feels like The 13th Strawberry Monkees Airplane Alarm Clock Boxtops, but it takes me 13 years to be bitten by the psychedelic bug when fellow pupil Graeme Ainslie (RIP) starts bringing weird records to music class: Velvet Underground, The 13th Floor Elevators, The Doors, The Teardrop Explodes, The Fall, The Cure and Echo & The Bunnymen. I can draw, so he lends me these records to copy the sleeves and I sneak a listen to each and every one. They aren’t singing about our grey east end of Glasgow but instead The Slide Machine, The End or Villiers Terrace, times and spaces that exist only in their addled minds. I don’t do the LSD, dope, magic mushrooms or pass-out games of the times but through primal fanzines of Lindsay Hutton in grey Grangemouth followed by the visceral trippy recommendations of Edwin Pouncey aka Savage Pencil in Sounds, I get The Paisley Underground infection instead.

The Strip: Las Vegas and the Symbolic Destruction of Spectacle By Stefan Johannes Al A dissertation submitted in the partial satisfaction of the Requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in City and Regional Planning in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Nezar AlSayyad, Chair Professor Greig Crysler Professor Ananya Roy Professor Michael Southworth Fall 2010 The Strip: Las Vegas and the Symbolic Destruction of Spectacle © 2010 by Stefan Johannes Al Abstract The Strip: Las Vegas and the Symbolic Destruction of Spectacle by Stefan Johannes Al Doctor of Philosophy in City and Regional Planning University of California, Berkeley Professor Nezar AlSayyad, Chair Over the past 70 years, various actors have dramatically reconfigured the Las Vegas Strip in many forms. I claim that behind the Strip’s “reinventions” lies a process of symbolic destruction. Since resorts distinguish themselves symbolically, each new round of capital accumulation relies on the destruction of symbolic capital of existing resorts. A new resort either ups the language within a paradigm, or causes a paradigm shift, which devalues the previous resorts even further. This is why, in the context of the Strip, buildings have such a short lifespan. This dissertation is chronologically structured around the four building booms of new resort construction that occurred on the Strip. Historically, there are periodic waves of new casino resort constructions with continuous upgrades and renovation projects in between. They have been successively theorized as suburbanization, corporatization, Disneyfication, and global branding. Each building boom either conforms to a single paradigm or witnesses a paradigm shift halfway: these paradigms have been theorized as Wild West, Los Angeles Cool, Pop City, Corporate Modern, Disneyland, Sim City, and Starchitecture.
