Pedaliodes lithochalcis, occurring in Costa Rica and Panama, has been considered for more than a century a junior synonym of P. dejecta from Guatemala. It is reinstated here as a valid species. It is shown that the two species belong to different groups of species with sympatric representatives throughout Central America and the Andes characterized by common characters of adult morphology, particularly the male genitalia. Pedaliodes lithochalcis is closely related to P. napaea whose new subspecies, P. napaea naksi n. ssp., is described from the Celaque massif in Honduras. It is the first cloud forest Satyrinae butterfly described from this country. Pedaliodes dejecta is related to another Mesoamerican species, P. ereiba, and to P. pomponia from Ecuador and to a new species, P. peregrina n. sp., from Peru and Bolivia. Despite recent advances, its systematics and faunistics remain far from being fully explored. -

Corrections, Notes and Observations on LGBI2
Corrections to the Flora: Part 2 Last revised 4th April 2017 A list of ‘Corrections’ was started soon after the publication of the 2009 Flora. By 2015 a considerable list of typographic errors, suggested additions to the text and simple corrections based on published information had been compiled. These are in black text. Additions to this list from 2016 onwards are in blue text. Members of the British Lichen Society also started to report instances where their own taxonomic and ecological observations differed from the Flora account. These notes are added in purple text; these are of considerable interest and importance but often rely on unpublished observations. The purple text should be considered as provisional, speculative and/or providing discussion of ways that a future version of the Flora might be improved. Nomenclature is as used in the Flora. Species added to the British list since the publication of the Flora are not mentioned. Updating taxonomy is a separate project. For a few species notes on changes in distribution have been added but this does not represent a comprehensive update of distributional information. Inconsistencies that run through the ‘Flora’ (TLGB&I). There are various inconsistencies in nomenclature which appear to have arisen due to the different sources and the different authors for the various generic accounts. Thallus: Sources on the internet suggest that ‘thallus’ is the term given to undifferentiated vegetative tissue in diverse groups which were previously known as thallophytes (including algae, fungi and others). In TLGB&I the term thallus appears to have been used inconsistently, sometimes to imply lichenization and elsewhere in the wider sense to describe the presence of vegetative hyphae. -

The arthropod fauna inhabiting 90 individuals of three different spe- cies of epiphyte was investigated in the moist lowland forest of the Barro Colorado National Monument in Panama. In total, 3694 arthropods belonging to 89 morpho- species and 19 orders were collected. While arthropod abundance was primarily a function of host plant biomass irrespective of epiphyte species, there were pro- nounced differences in species richness, species composition and guild structure of the arthropod faunas of the three epiphyte species. Although all study plants were growing in close proximity on the same host tree species, there was remarkably little overlap in the species assemblages across epiphyte taxa. The inhabitant species also differed dramatically in their ecological functions, as feeding guild and hunting guild analyses indicated. The influence of plant size, structure and impounded leaf litter onarthropod diversity is discussed. We concludethat epiphytes are microhabitats for a diverse and numerous fauna, and that different species of epiphytes foster both taxonomically and ecologically very distinct arthropod assemblages. Kaieteur National Park was selected as the first area under this program. Understanding and identifying important ecosystems and the locations of endemic plant taxa will assist Guyana in formulating a comprehensive management and conservation policy that can be incorporated into the development of Kaieteur National Park. Over one hundred-eighty observations on the host use and ant association of ninety-eight riodinid butterflies are presented — a substantial addition to our understanding of this distinctly neotropical group. These observations are contrasted to previous work, and discussed with respect to apparent patterns of phytophagy, aphytophagy, caterpillar sociality, and ant association. The majority of riodinid species have unknown life histories, and thus we conclude that much more fieldwork is need before a phyloge- netic approach to host use and ant association can be established. INTRODUCTION The fact that there are more species of bats than elephants, more little bats than large ones, more species of insects than mammals, and so on vividly demonstrates one of the best known axioms of biodiversity — there is an inverse relationship between body size and number of species (Hutchinson & MacArthur 1959; May 1978; Van Valen 1973). In other words, the species- number game is not for giants. Add to this that the taxonomy of small-bodied organisms is typically less well known than that of larger ones (Mayr 1969), and it is easy to appreciate how crude our understanding of biodiversity really is. However, the importance of biodiversity lies not simply in numbers but in how organisms live and interact within habitats. -

(NEW Dec. 3, PAPILIO SERIES) ~19 2008 CORRECTIONS/REVIEWS OF 58 NORTH AMERICAN BUTTERFLY BOOKS Dr. James A. Scott, 60 Estes Street, Lakewood, Colorado 80226-1254 Abstract. Corrections are given for 58 North American butterfly books. Most of these books are recent. Misidentified figures mostly of adults, erroneous hostplants, and other mistakes are corrected in each book. Suggestions are made to improve future butterfly books. Identifications of figured specimens in Holland's 1931 & 1898 Butterfly Book & 1915 Butterfly Guide are corrected, and their type status clarified, and corrections are made to F. M. Brown's series of papers on Edwards; types (many figured by Holland), because some of Holland's 75 lectotype designations override lectotype specimens that were designated later, and several dozen Holland lectotype designations are added to the J. Pelham Catalogue. Type locality designations are corrected/defined here (some made by Brown, most by others), for numerous names: aenus, artonis, balder, bremnerii, brettoides, brucei (Oeneis), caespitatis, cahmus, callina, carus, colon, colorado, coolinensis, comus, conquista, dacotah, damei, dumeti, edwardsii (Oarisma), elada, epixanthe, eunus, fulvia, furcae, garita, hermodur, kootenai, lagus, mejicanus, mormo, mormonia, nilus, nympha, oreas, oslari, philetas, phylace, pratincola, rhena, saga, scudderi, simius, taxiles, uhleri. Five first reviser actions are made (albihalos=austinorum, davenporti=pratti, latalinea=subaridum, maritima=texana [Cercyonis], ricei=calneva). The name c-argenteum is designated nomen oblitum, faunus a nomen protectum. Three taxa are demonstrated to be invalid nomina nuda (blackmorei, sulfuris, svilhae), and another nomen nudum ( damei) is added to catalogues as a "schizophrenic taxon" in order to preserve stability. Problems caused by old scientific names and the time wasted on them are discussed. -
