E-mail: [email protected] Abstract. This paper investigates the butterfly fauna of the ‘Serra do Rola-Moça’ State Park, Minas Gerais, Brazil. We eval- uate i) the seasonal variation of species richness and composition; and ii) the variation in composition of the local butterfly assemblage among three sampling sites and between the dry and rainy seasons. Sampling was carried out monthly between November 2012 and October 2013, using entomological nets. After a total sampling effort of 504 net hours, 311 species were recorded. One of them is endangered in Brazil, and eight are probable new species. Furthermore, two species were new records for the region and eight considered endemic of the Cerrado domain. There was no significant difference in species richness between the dry and the rainy seasons, however the species composition varies significantly among sampling sites. Due to its special, heterogeneous environment, which is home to a rich butterfly fauna, its preservation is important for the conservation of the regional butterfly fauna. -

Un nouvel Eurybiini du genre Alesa de Guyane française (Lepidoptera, Riodinidae) par Christian BRÉVIGNON Villa A7, Rochambeau, F – 97351 Matoury <[email protected]> Résumé. – Une nouvelle espèce du genre Alesa Doubleday, 1847, originaire de Guyane française, Alesa humilis n. sp., est décrite et comparée avec deux espèces proches, A. telephae (Boisduval, 1836) et A. amethystina Gallard & Fernandez, 2015. Abstract. – A new Eurybiini of the genus Alesa from French Guiana (Lepidoptera, Riodinidae). A new species of the genus Alesa Doubleday, 1847, from French Guiana, Alesa humilis n. sp., is described and compared with two closely allied species, A. telephae (Boisduval, 1836) and A. amethystina Gallard & Fernandez, 2015. Keywords. – Riodininae, new species, taxonomy, Guiana shield. _________________ Le genre Alesa Doubleday, 1847, a récemment fourni matière à description de nouveaux taxa (SALAZAR & CONSTANTINO, 2007 ; HALL & AHRENHOLZ, 2010 ; GALLARD & FERNANDEZ, 2015). Un spécimen mâle de la collection L. & C. Brévignon avait été mis de côté depuis de nombreuses années en vue d’un examen plus approfondi. Les motifs alaires et la structure des genitalia permettent de différencier ce spécimen des taxa décrits jusqu’alors, et particulièrement d’Alesa telephae (Boisduval, 1836) et d’A. amethystina Gallard & Fernandez, 2015. L’objet de cet article est la description de cette nouvelle espèce. Alesa humilis n. sp. (fig. 1-2) HOLOTYPE : ♂, Guyane française, Roura, RN 2, PK 35, 14.X.1989, collection L. & C. Brévignon (Matoury, Guyane française). Description du mâle. – Longueur de l’aile antérieure : 19,5 mm. Antennes brun clair, trompe beige, vertex brun, pattes antérieures beiges, abdomen court, légèrement teinté d’orangé face dorsale. -

Springer Seicnee+Business Media, LLC 2011 Abstract Discerning the intricacies of mating systems in butterflies can be difficult, particularly when multiple mating strategies are employed and are cryptic and not exclusive. We observed the behavior and habitat use of 113 male Taylor's checkerspot butterflies (Euphydryas editha taylori). We confinned that two distinct mating strategies were exhibited; patrolling and perching. These strategies varied temporally in relation to the protandrous mating system employed. Among perching males, we recorded high site fidelity and aggressive defense of small «5 m2) territories. This telTitoriality was not clearly a function of classic or non-classic resource defense (i.e., host plants or landscape), but rather appeared to constitute guarding of female pupae (virgin females). This discrete behavior is previously undocumented for this species and has rarely been observed in butterflies. We see that the recently proposed genera Neoapodemia Trujano, 2018 and Plesioarida Trujano & García, 2018 are closely allied with Apodemia C. & R. Felder, [1865] and are better viewed as its subgenera, new status. Overall, Emesis Fabricius, 1807 and Apodemia (even after inclusion of the two subgenera) are so phylogenetically close that several species have been previously swapped between these two genera. New combinations are: Apodemia (Neoapodemia) zela (Butler, 1870), Apodemia (Neoapodemia) ares (Edwards, 1882), and Apodemia (Neoapodemia) arnacis (Stichel, 1928) (not Emesis); and Emesis phyciodoides (Barnes & Benjamin, 1924) (not Apodemia), assigned to each genus by their monophyly in genomic trees with the type species (TS) of the genus. -

Durden 2 and Hugh Rose 3 ABSTRACT Three fossil butterflies recently collected from the Green River Shale of Colorado extend the known range of Rhopalocera eight to ten million years back, to 48 Ma. Praepapilio Colorado n. g., n. sp., and P. gracilis n. sp. are primitive Papilionidae related to the modern Baronia brevicornis Salvin, but they require a new subfamily, Praepapilioninae. Riodinella nympha n. g., n. sp. is a primitive member of the Lycaenidae, related to modern Ancyluris, Riodina, and Rhetus, in the tribe Riodinidi. INTRODUCTION With approximately 194,000 living species, the Lepidoptera is, after the Coleoptera with some 350,000, species, the second most diverse order of organisms. It is underrepresented in the fossil record (Scudder 1875, 1891, 1892; Handlirsch 1925;Mackay 1970;Kuhne 1973; Shields 1976). -

Former studies have shown that there is an interspecific allometric relationship between egg size and adult body size in butterflies and skippers. This is here re-assessed at the family and subfamily levels in order to determine to what extent the overall trend is uniform through different taxonomic lineages. The results suggest that different subtaxa are characterised by different allometric slopes. Al- though statistical analysis across species means is known to be potentially misleading to assess evolu- tionary relations, it is shown that the comparison of apparent patterns (based on species means) with inferred evolutionary trends (based on independent contrasts) may help to understand the evolution of egg size in butterflies. Further, intuitive reconsideration of statistically non-significant results may prove informative. As an example, argumentation in favour of a positive association between large egg size and the use of monocotyledon plants as larval food is presented. Taxa where atypical allometric trends are found include the Riodininae and Theclini (Lycaenidae), the Graphiini (Papilionidae), and the Heliconiinae (Nymphalidae). -

Introduction In 2005 and 2006, anti-neoliberal coalitions won the elections in Bolivia and Ecuador, respectively. In both countries, this development put an end to the rules that had regulated the use of natural resources in hydrocarbon extraction during the latter part of the twentieth century (Hogenboom, 2014). The post-neoliberal governments constructed new institutions for the governance of extractive-industry activities. The new rules of the game have changed the way in which the Andean countries govern extractive industries. It has not put an end to their dependence on income generated from natural resources, but it has changed the way in which that income is distributed. The process of change from neoliberalism to post-neoliberalism was fast, and fraught with confusion and abandoned experiments. This chapter describes that process. Two analytical objectives guide this description. First, I will identify the factors that guided the changes from neoliberalism to post-neoliberalism; and second, I will analyse the pos- sibilities for the governance of mineral and hydrocarbon wealth and the creation of a “government of nature” that were opened up by the new regulatory framework. Natural resources, rentier states, development and post-neoliberalism The contemporary debate about development based on natural resources has existed since the 1990s.
