NEWSLETTER September 2017, issue 7 Parish Council matters The Parish Council welcomes a new councillor, Sarah Sinclair, who has been co-opted following the resignation of Bernard Nix a few months ago. Sarah brings a new perspective to the Parish Council being the parent of school-aged children. There is an increasing number of young families in Purley on Thames, so it is important that they ‘have a voice’ on the council. We are really pleased Sarah is joining us. If you would like to find out more about what the Parish Council does and how it works you can speak to the Parish Clerk, to me or any of the other councillors or come as an observer to a parish meeting. The Parish Office sometimes receives information from local residents about speeding issues in Purley on Thames. When there are concerns about speeding the local community needs to collect speeding data then, when we have a picture of a problem in a particular area we can refer it to the Traffic and Road Safety Team at West Berkshire Council. To be effective at tackling excessive speed in this way, we need a team of Speed Indicating Device (SID) volunteers to gather the data. West Berkshire Council provides training for using the equipment and all volunteers must attend. We currently have three Parish Councillors trained with SID but you don’t need to be a councillor to do this and Purley needs at least six qualified people. The next SID training session is on 25th October 6.30-8.30pm in Newbury. -

THE WATERMILL THEATRE ACCESS GUIDE We hope this guide gives you all the information you need to make your visit to The Watermill an enjoyable one. Box office 01635 46044 [email protected] [email protected] www.watermill.org.uk ACCESSING THE THEATRE Public Transport The theatre is located two miles from Newbury town centre in the small, rural village of Bagnor, which has no public transport facilities. The nearest bus stop is approximately fifteen minutes walk away at Station Road, Speen. Please be aware there are no pavements for approximately half of this route and no street lighting. Buses run every two hours. A community bus service (Handibus) operated by West Berkshire Volunteer Centre and manned by voluntary drivers, transports a group of elderly and infirm to the theatre at least once during the run of each show. Architect IHBC an Inspector appointed by the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Decision date: 7 November 2013 Appeal Ref: APP/Y3940/E/13/2196123 Baydon Manor, Marridge Hill, Ramsbury, Marlborough, Wiltshire SN8 2HG • The appeal is made under section 20 of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 against a refusal to grant listed building consent. • The appeal is made by Mr and Mrs P Stibbard against the decision of Wiltshire Council. • The application Ref E/2011/1572/LBC, dated 16 November 2011, was refused by notice dated 11 October 2012. • The works proposed are the demolition of the Winter Garden. Procedural matters 1. The appellant states that the proposal would be partial demolition, as the smaller attached vine house to the south would be retained. I have had regard to the list description and the relative volumes of the part to be demolished and the part to be retained as indicated on the application form. As only small ancillary and preexisting structures would remain, the proposal would amount to total demolition of the principal building. I have therefore assessed this appeal on that basis and amended the description of the works. 2. For the purposes of Section 16 of the above Act, I have taken the whole heritage asset into account i.e. the grade II listed Manor House and its curtilage buildings, including the separately grade II listed Winter Garden. Decision 3. The appeal is dismissed. -

It was rebuilt in 1086 as a partially moated Benedictine priory and then dissolved in 1536 leaving just the nave of the priory church which we see today as the parish church. A major restoration took place in 1852. A female yew grows on a significant mound south of the church. Girth was 11' 2'' at the root crown. Streatley & Goring High Streets & Bridge closure Parts of Streatley and Goring High Streets will be closed on Sunday 31 May 2020, from 10am onwards, (expected to be completed by early evening). The closure will be from the junction with Church Lane, to the junction (across the bridge) with Thames Road (opposite Goring Village Hall) Thames Water has applied for a complete closure, athough in the event traffic lights may be in operation. The alternative route for all vehicles affected is via A329, High St (Pangbourne), Whitchurch Rd (B471), B4526 (toward Goring), and vice versa. This is an emergency closure so Thames Water can carry out repairs to a visible leak and to reinstate the carriageway surface.
