Don was active in standardisation in his career and sat on various British and European Standards Committees and his claim to fame was that he wrote a British Standard for Aerosol Fire Extinguishers which is even now being adopted as a European Standard. Don came into swimming as many people have done when his son joined the local swimming club. Being only nine he accompanied him to his first competitive Gala and as he walked into the pool (Open Air) he was asked if he had ever used a stop watch and as he had he was appointed Timekeeper for the evening. As the watch was a mechanical one with a 30 second sweep he made a number of errors but they cannot have been that bad as he was asked again. From that time his involvement with the club, the Bury St. Edmunds SC, increased and in addition to timekeeping he served as Records Officer and Fixtures Officer and his wife also became involved and was Club Secretary and later Club Chairman. He was also involved in joining Bury St Edmunds SC with Haverhill SC to become the West Suffolk SC which has been a successful club for the last twelve years. Don became involved with Officiating, first taking County exams and later Midland District exams and he finally became a referee in 1992 making him only the second Referee in Suffolk County. As well as Club Administration they both became involved in County administration, his wife was County Secretary from 1983 until 1989 at which time Don took over the position and he remained as County Secretary until 2009 and both consider themselves fortunate to have been elected President for their County twice. From County he went on to District affairs when he was elected to the Midland District Executive in 1994. The District rules allowed 15 elected representatives but due to a dead heat in the voting, not discovered until the next day, he became the 16th representative for that year. Without this error he would probably still be County Secretary as he may have thought that the District Executive was not for him, especially as he was the first representative ever from Suffolk on the District Executive. With the advent of Regionalisation he was elected Chairman of the ASA East Region Shadow Management Board and saw the Region successfully formed in October 2005. He is still an elected member of the Regions Management Board and was proud to be elected Regional President in 2006. He is Swimming Manager for the Region and with a small but expert team (the TSC) he has run the Regions Championships for five years and considers that the organisation and running of these Championships is second to none.

President’s Address: The President, Eddie Wilmott, extended a warm welcome to past presidents, life members, delegates and board members at the 117th AGM. The president thanked the Scottish Swimming staff for all of their preparations and organisation for the AGM and Stirling University for use of the facility. Before continuing, the President respectfully requested delegates to stand and observe a one minute silence to commemorate the following Scottish Swimming members and supporters who have sadly passed away over the past year: John McClatchey, Warrender BC Swimmer and dad to Caitlin McClatchey Noreen Brown, wife of past president Douglas Brown Sir Peter Heatly, SASA Life Member and Past President Bill Murdoch, SASA Life Member and Past President Sandra Scotland, Heart of Midlothian and Swimming Technical Official Jack McQueen, Grove ASC Lesley Turberville, SASA Life Member and Past President The President asked delegates to advise if there were further intimation of names from the AGM and there were none.     Lizzie Simmonds and Caitlin McClatchey – 2012 GB Swimming On 16th May 2012, Lizzie Simmonds and Caitlin McClatchey, Team GB swimmers, visited our school as Ambassadors of the Wells Sports Foundation, a charity that has been created to support grassroots sport. The swimmers are sponsored by the Foundation, to support them in their preparations for the 2012 Olympics. The founder of the charity, Barrie Wells also came along for the visit as this was the 50th visit in Leicestershire schools by the Foundation! We welcomed back Lizzie who visited us last year! Lizzie first competed as a senior international at the European Long Course Championships in 2006 and since then she has been a regular medallist and finalist in the Backstroke and Medley Relay events at the major championships, including 6th in the 200m Backstroke at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Caitlin is a freestyle swimmer. She won two gold medals at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. Between 2007 and 2009 she held several individual British records, including the 100m, 200m and 400m Freestyle. She is a part of the relay teams that hold the current 4 x 100m and 4 x 200m freestyle relay British records. Our children were lucky enough to meet Lizzie and Caitlin, listen to them speak about their experiences, see some of their specialist equipment and then take part in a physical activity session led by the stars! This involved some of the key aspects of swimming training including Pilates based work and reaction times games. They also delivered a workshop on healthy eating and sport.
