Technological advances in energy production have driven changes in energy consumption, and Melissa N. Diaz, the United States has moved from being a net importer of most forms of energy to a declining Coordinator importer—and a net exporter in 2019. The United States remains the second largest producer and Analyst in Energy Policy consumer of energy in the world, behind China. Overall energy consumption in the United States has held relatively steady since 2000, while the mix of energy sources has changed. Between 2000 and 2019, consumption of natural gas and renewable energy increased, while oil and nuclear power were relatively flat and coal decreased. In the same period, production of oil, natural gas, and renewables increased, while nuclear power was relatively flat and coal decreased. Overall energy production increased by 42% over the same period. Increases in the production of oil and natural gas are due in part to technological improvements in hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling that have facilitated access to resources in unconventional formations (e.g., shale). U.S. oil production (including natural gas liquids and crude oil) and natural gas production hit record highs in 2019. The United States is the largest producer of natural gas, a net exporter, and the largest consumer. Oil, natural gas, and other liquid fuels depend on a network of over three million miles of pipeline infrastructure. -

Tijekom povijesti, događali su se razni preokreti cijena nafte, čime bi mnoge zemlje ili tvrtke profitirale ili upale u krizu. U razdoblju COVID-a, cijena je drastično potonula te se u ovom radu prati taj pad cijene u usporedbi s cijenama tijekom prijašnjih kriza u povijesti. -

There are signs that this period of “easy energy” is coming to an end, turning energy into a major economic and political issue in its own right. Peak Oil is a term used by geologists to describe the point in time at which the world’s annual conventional oil production reaches a maximum after which it inevitably declines. Recent evidence suggests that we may pass this peak in this decade. In a broader sense, Peak Oil also stands for the economic, political, and societal effects of a dramatically changing energy supply. These effects will create unprecedented problems, risks and opportunities for policy makers as well as for consumers and businesses. In part due to higher oil prices, the US has begun to catch up to this issue, as evidenced by the founding of a Peak Oil Caucus in the House of Representatives in 2005 and by the demand of former President Bush to find ways to cure “America’s addiction to oil”. -

The national energy enterprise has served us well, driving unprecedented economic growth and prosperity and supporting our national security. The U.S. energy system is entering a period of unprecedented change; new technologies, new requirements, and new vulnerabilities are transforming the system. The challenge is to transition to energy systems and technologies that simultaneously address the nation’s most fundamental needs—energy security, economic competitiveness, and environmental responsibility—while providing better energy services. Emerging advanced energy technologies can do much to address these challenges, but further improvements in cost and performance are important.1 Carefully targeted research, development, demonstration, and deployment (RDD&D) are essential to achieving these improvements and enabling us to meet our nation’s energy objectives. This report, the 2015 Quadrennial Technology Review (QTR 2015), examines science and technology RDD&D opportunities across the entire U.S. energy system. It focuses primarily on technologies with commercialization potential in the mid-term and beyond. It frames various tradeoffs that all energy technologies must balance, across such dimensions as diversity and security of supply, cost, environmental impacts, reliability, land use, and materials use. Finally, it provides data and analysis on RDD&D pathways to assist decision makers as they set priorities, subject to budget constraints, to develop more secure, affordable, and sustainable energy services. -

The paper examined Nigeria’s oil sector in order to get a time point of total depletion. Data for production rate, P, was sourced from 1958–2008 for the study. This research employed Hubbert’s Model that based the peaking of oil reserves on the simulation of a bell-shaped curve that rises rapidly to a peak and declines just as quickly. MATLAB tool was employed in the analysis of data. Findings include that there is an imminent decline in Nigeria’s oil reserve since peaking could have occurred or just about to occur; this is shown to be in agreement with previous studies, and an account of how oil depletion will affect domestic use of energy is also highlighted. -

Democratic Service STRATEGY AND POLICY COMMITTEE 24 AUGUST 2006 REPORT 5 (1215/52/IM) OIL PRICES AND ‘PEAK OIL’: COUNCIL RESPONSE 1. Purpose of Report The purpose of the report is to: • provide information on the implications of increasing oil prices and peak oil for Wellington City Council • summarise the current response by Government and the Council • recommend further action to position the Council as a leader in responding to oil-related risks. 2. Executive Summary Recent oil price increases are resulting in increasing costs for the public and businesses and are also impacting on the Council’s service delivery costs. The price increases are resulting from the intersection of high demand and constrained supply. Supply constraints are related in part to limited global oil supply and the imminent peak in oil production (‘peak oil’). While expert opinions differ as to the amount of global oil reserves and the precise date of peak oil (some say it has already occurred or is about to occur, while others say it is 30 years away), the actual date is not as relevant as the need to initiate a response in advance. In a report prepared for the United States Department of Energy, Dr. Robert Hirsch states that mitigation measures must be initiated around 20 years before peak oil production to avoid global fuel shortages. Prudent risk management is essential, and it appears that the risk of inaction is much greater than the risk of premature action. The effects of peak oil are, generally: • significant oil price increases and price volatility • supply shortages of oil and oil-based products like petroleum.
