Linus worked alongside Charles Shultz, creator of the “Pea- nuts” comic strip, as a cartoon instructor. He also wrote and created cartoons and animation for television, films, newspapers and magazine covers. Linus was the inspiration for Shultz’s “Linus” character in his comic strip “Peanuts.” Linus was the neighbor and friend of Becky Magura’s brother Perry and sister-in-law Liz, who live in California. When Linus heard that Becky was helping start a TV Auction for a PBS station, he offered to create the Bird, cartoons and drawings as a gift.

4 | WCTE Close-Up The House Budget Defunds Public Media (from protectmypublicmedia.org)

We’ll start with the bad news first. On March 25, the U.S. House of Representatives passed its annual Budget Reso- lution, calling for an end to federal funding for public media. The Good news? The Senate’s version of the budget does NOT call for eliminating public media funding. So, public media’s in the clear? Not quite.

The House and Senate will have to iron out the differences between their respective spending plans, the joint Budget Resolution. The joint Budget Resolution sets the overall spending limit for the federal government, and then gives each Congressional Subcom- mittee that writes the funding bills a spending limit. WHAT’S AT STAKE? The public airwaves. Without federal funding, the operation of hundreds of public televi- sion and radio stations, including WCTE, would be in jeopardy. The programs you adore today might not be there tomorrow. And the next generation might never get to know the public TV kids line-up that helped us get ready for school. ALL FOR THE PRICE OF A CUP OF COFFEE PER YEAR Public media funding is such a small part of the federal budget. In fact, it’s about one hundredth of one percent of the federal budget – around $1.35 per American citizen - the price of a cup of coffee/year. Eliminat- ing this funding wouldn’t impact our national debt, but it would be really bad for our stations. AN EASY WAY TO EMAIL YOUR MEMBERS OF CONGRESS ... in support of public media funding today, and tell your like-minded public media listening and viewing friends, family and neighbors to do the same. Go to: protectmypublicmedia.org Click on the “TAKE ACTION” button. When you type in your zip code, it will give you a pre-written letter (which you can modify if you want). You can check off the names of your Senators and Representative you wish to receive it. When you fill in your sender information and press “SEND,” your voice will be heard!

AMERICAN MASTERS American Ballet Theatre: A History Friday, May 15 “The story of American Ballet Theatre, and the breath- taking rise of dance in the U.S. over the last three- quarters of a century, is one of the most inspiring stories in the cultural world,” commented Ric Burns, the show’s producer. “Ballet is the most poignantly ephemeral and expressive of all the arts, both earth- bound and transcendent. And ABT, indisputably one of the greatest dance companies in the world, has torn down an incredible number of barriers, welcom- ing choreographers of every kind and dancers from around the world.” The program chronicles the rise of the company from its earliest days as a small, financially struggling col- lective, to its pinnacle as one of the most respected and revered dance companies in the world. Ric Burns was given unprecedented access to the company and shot hundreds of hours of original footage, including dramatic live performances in Paris and Havana, gruel- ing rehearsals at ABT’s flagship studio in New York City and slow-motion captures at Kaatsbaan International Dance Center in Tivoli, N.Y. The documentary features iconic dances by nine ABT dancers, including Copeland, Murphy, Seo, Gomes, Isabella Boylston, Herman Cornejo, Daniil Simkin, Joseph Gorak and Cory Stearns, chosen for their diversity and breadth of talent to illustrate the ABT dancers’ formidable technicality, intricate artistry and nuanced emotion. Captured at up to 2,500 frames per second, the film brings to life even the smallest of movements and a new dimension to the understanding of the extraordinary efforts made in the perfection of form. Combined with hundreds of carefully curated stills from archives across the country, the documentary provides a comprehensive inside look at American Ballet Theatre and the world of professional ballet. The Homefront Monday, May 25 More than two million men and women serve in America’s all-volunteer military force, and another three million are their husbands, wives, sons and daughters. Over the course of two long wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, their stories and the service of these military families have often been overlooked. In a revealing two-hour documentary special pre- sented by Bob Woodruff, The Homefront will bring the true stories of these military families to our WCTE and PBS audience. With unprecedented access and filmed over 14 months, The Homefront creates a series of intimate portraits — following families through the difficul- ties of deployment, the joys of homecoming, and the challenges of reintegrating as a family after many months apart. Viewers will meet a cross-section of America’s military community: Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Airmen, some in the active duty force, and some in the National Guard and Reserve. Representing many ranks, and drawn from across the country, these families illustrate what it means to serve. From an Army Staff Sergeant torn between family and military duty, to a Marine Gunnery Sergeant struggling to reconnect with his wife and children after a long deployment, to a Navy Command Master Chief whose husband has given up his own career to raise their children, The Homefront reveals that in the military, family life is never routine. The military lifestyle is one that most Americans will never experience — and may never even encounter. Now more than ever it is important to understand these families and their story — one of pride, patrio- tism, sacrifice and resilience.

FIRST PEOPLES: AMERICA Wednesday, June 24 As early humans spread out across the world, their toughest challenge was colonizing the Americas because a huge ice sheet blocked the route. It has long been thought that the first Americans were Clovis people, who arrived 13,000 years ago. But an underwa- ter discovery in Mexico suggests people arrived earlier — coming by boat, not on foot. How closely related were these early Americans to today’s Native Ameri- cans? It’s an emotive issue, involving one of the most controversial fossils in the world, Kennewick Man.

FIRST PEOPLES: AFRICA Wednesday, June 24 200,000 years ago, a new species, Homo sapiens, ap- peared on the African landscape. While scientists have long imagined eastern Africa as a real-life Garden of Eden, the latest research suggests humans evolved in many places across the continent at the same time. Now, the DNA of a 19th-century African-American slave reveals that during the early days of our species, our ancestors continued meeting, mating and hybrid- izing with other human types in Africa — creating ever greater diversity within us.
