TAMI BAUMANN (Film inspired by her true story) – Sgt. Baumann, an officer at LAPD’s 77 th Street Division, met the real Yvonne Caldwell in 2003. It was Caldwell’s three dogs that caught Sgt. Baumann’s attention, and the overwhelming care she took of the strays. Sgt. Baumann, who was well-known in the department for her love of animals – and who had been finding homes for strays since she was a child – used this connection to form a bond with Caldwell. Over time, Caldwell began to open up to Sgt. Baumann, relating her gradual fall into poverty, a tale of struggling with abuse and abandonment which led to a long struggle with alcoholism. By mid-2001, her prized SUV was her home and only possession, but that too was taken from her when she couldn’t afford the fees to release it from impound after it was stolen.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE INTRODUCING GRACE’S ROCKIN’ ROLL ADVENTURE FEATURING ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAMER LITTLE STEVEN VAN ZANDT A NEW BOOK THAT USES MUSIC TO EMPOWER TEACHERS AND INSPIRE YOUNG STUDENTS IN READING, SCIENCE, AND MATH --Book and accompanying “STEAM” Lesson Plan Launched as Part of Rock and Roll Forever Foundation’s K-12 TeachRock Initiative --- New York, NY (October XX) – Grace’s Rockin’ Roll Adventure, a new children’s book featuring the characters from The Musical Adventures of Grace series accompanied by rock star and actor Steven Van Zandt, connects music and early elementary reading, science, and math. Developed as a partnership between TeachRock.org, the main initiative of Van Zandt’s Rock and Roll Forever Foundation, and author Ken Korber’s Center for Functional Learning, the book also features an accompanying lesson plan that engages the youngest learners in a fun, music-filled “STEAM” (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) project. Grace’s Rockin’ Roll Adventure is currently being piloted in TeachRock Partner Schools and select school systems in New York, New Jersey, California, and Illinois. In the book, the 9th in the Musical Adventures of Grace Series, Grace and her classmates win a contest to attend a Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul concert—a realistic plot considering that during his 2018 Teacher Solidarity Tour, Van Zandt gifted tickets to nearly 10,000 students and teachers nationwide. Invigorated by the music, Grace approaches Van Zandt, who bequeaths an instrument, setting the young musician on a rock and roll adventure with her classmates. In the accompanying workbook, real-life students learn about the various shapes in guitar designs, and ultimately combine music, math, art, and geometry to create a two- dimensional instrument of their own.

Diagnosing Drama: Grey’s Anatomy, Blind Casting, and the Politics of Representation AMY LONG N FEBRUARY 5, 2006 NEARLY THIRTY-EIGHT MILLION VIEWERS CHOSE TO forego post-Super Bowl celebrations in favor of tuning in to a Omuch-hyped episode of ABC’s hit medical melodrama Grey’s Anatomy. The episode thus constitutes ‘‘the best scripted-series perfor- mance since the series finale of Friends’’ in 2004 and ‘‘the best per- formance of an ABC show since an episode of Home Improvement in 1994’’ (‘‘Grey’s Scores Big’’). Grey’s Anatomy and its multiracial ensem- ble stand in marked contrast to the all-white casts of both aforemen- tioned shows, a fact that has not been lost on media observers. When civil rights groups issued their annual ‘‘diversity report cards’’ for 2006, ABC garnered the highest overall grade of the four major net- works (an A-), thanks in part to shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Lost, and Ugly Betty (‘‘Grey’s Leads Charge’’). Its diverse cast and the production practices through which it was assembled have been the major focus of the media attention conferred upon Grey’s, second only to stories con- cerning the colossal audiences it routinely snags.1 The show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes (currently the only African American woman ‘‘showrunner’’ in network television), gives the credit for her show’s diversity to her ‘‘race-blind’’ casting methods. In her Time Magazine profile of the writer and producer, Jeanne McDowell notes that ‘‘[Rhimes’] script for the pilot had no physical descriptions [of its characters] other than gender,’’ a statement repeated in almost all of the popular press coverage the show receives.2 As Rhimes herself affirmed in an interview with Oprah Winfrey, ‘‘We really read every color actor for every single part.
