WELCOME TO !

On your short drive today, you will see “ghostly” spirts of some of Pohick Church’s early parishioners. We wish you could talk to them but because of the pandemic, you can only see them:

George and Martha Washington - George was the first president of the United States and the Commanding General of the that defeated the British thus winning independence for the colonies. George and Martha lived at their nearby plantation and attended church at Pohick, where George served on the Vestry.

George Mason led patriots during the , and his concept of inalienable rights influenced 's Declaration of Independence. This George is known for writing The Virginia Declaration of Rights, which served as the model of the Bill of Rights in the US Constitution. He lived at his plantation and worshiped at Pohick Church.

Sally Moore Henderson - Sally was the wife of Alexander Henderson, a shipping merchant of Scottish descent who came to the colonies at the age of 19 (1756). She and Alexander had 10 children (six sons and four daughters), several of whom obtained considerable prominence. She was the mother of Archibald Henderson, the longest serving commander of the Marine Corps; he served 39 years as Commander and left his mark on the corps. Another son, Thomas Henderson, was a physician and surgeon in the US Army and one of the founding members of the Virginia Theological Seminary in Virginia.

The Hendersons were long time members of Pohick Church, and Alexander was a Vestry member for 20 years. They were friends with both and . Alexander served as a magistrate, a member of the House of Burgess, before the revolution.

Dr. William Brown, who was from Scotland, was a practicing physician in Alexandria. In 1775, he became the surgeon of the 2nd Virginia Regiment. In 1778, the Continental Congress appointed him physician general of the Mid Atlantic ( to Hudson River). During that time, he compiled a standard set of procedures and formulas for medication treatment, which was the first American formulary and a pioneering effort to establish standardized care.

Dr. Brown is buried at Pohick Church.

The graveyard is full of many Pohick Saints besides those you saw today.
