Developing countries are especially vulnerable to sudden toxic blooms and red tides because they lack the expertise and infrastructure to deal quickly with the resulting fisheries and public health emergencies. This international directory lists research scientists, fisheries managers, public health officials, aquaculture professionals, physicians, and animal health specialists who are experienced in dealing with toxic and harmful algal bloom events and their impact on fisheries and public health. The direc tory is intended to improve and accelerate international information exchange and rapid access to experts who can respond quickly to these outbreaks and thus help reduce the consequences to fisheries and public health. The first edition of this directory was published in 1990 by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institu tion Sea Grant Program. The second edition is a cooperative effort by the U.S. Department of Com merce, NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service, Northeast Fisheries Science Center and the Harm ful Algal Bloom Programme of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission. The directory was compiled from surveys distributed in late 1993 and 1994. In some cases, minor editorial changes were made in the material received. The directory is by no means comprehensive, but it is hoped that subsequent editions will be expanded as those already included update their own I entries and pass surveys on to colleagues who were not contacted directly. The first edition included nearly 400 experts from 41 countries. The second edition lists more than 500 expens from 56 coun tries. Entries are organized alphabetically by country, and persons are listed under the country in which they are physically located. Entrants are listed alphabetically bv last name in an index in cluded at the back. The editors thank those who responded to and who distributed surveys to others, and Henrik Enevoldsen, IOC Associate Expert, who made publishing of this directory possible. Alan W. White Teri L.
