THE SYSTEMATICS AND DISTRIBUTION OF CRAYFISHES IN CALIFORNIA' J. A. RIEGEL Department of Zoology University of California, Davis INTRODUCTION Crayfishes are interesting and important members of California's freshwater fauna. They are an excellent food, have value as game fish forage, and are used by fishermen as bait for game fish. On the nega- tive side, the burrowing habits of some species at times make them a menace to irrigation structures in agricultural areas. Because no comprehensive account has heretofore been published on the crayfishes in California, with the exception of a popular report by Bonnot (1930), it is believed this paper will be of value to both the scientist and layman. Brief descriptions of species of California crayfishes occur in early expedition reports, and a few are mentioned in monographs on various crustacean groups, primarily the cambarines (Hagen, 1871; and Faxon, 1889, 1895, 1898, and 1914), and the marine decapods (Holmes, 1900). About the middle of the 19th century, crayfishes were collected and described by naturalists accompanying the Pacific explorations of the Boundary Commission and the TT. S. Exploring Expeditions. In 1852, Charles G-irard described Pacifastacus gambeli. In the same year, James Dana established P. leniusculus. In 1859, William Stimpson described P. trowbridgi, P. nigrescens, and P. klamathensis. At the time of these early explorations, only two species were found in California, Pacifastacus nigrescens and P. klamathensis. However, Faxon (1885) referred to a specimen of P. gambeli in the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard, which was included with a group of specimens from Santa Barbara, California ; but as no other specimen of that species had been found in California, he doubted the validity of the record. -

The major burrowing characteristics leading to, during and after burrow construction are described. Burrow initiation was significantly correlated to crayfish size; smaller individuals beginning construction more quickly. Field burrow morphologies, examined using an optic cable video camera, showed 92% to be simple with only a single opening (Length range 3.5 - 79.0 cm). Significant associations were found between the clay/sand content of stream bank sediments and crayfish burrow densities. Substrate selection experiments indicated a significant preference for artificial shelter over burrowing in clay for adult crayfish, and a significant preference for clay and artificial shelter over mud or gravel in juveniles. -

Ruşen Ustaoğlu2, Ekrem Şanver Çelik1 1 Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, Fisheries Faculty, Çanakkale-Turkey 2 Ege University, Fisheries Faculty, Izmir-Turkey Abstract Malacostraca fauna collected from freshwater and brackishwater in Sinop and Samsun were studied from 181 stations between February 1999 and September 2000. 19 species and 4 subspecies belonging to 15 genuses were found in 134 stations. In total, 23 taxon were found: 11 Amphipoda, 6 Decapoda, 4 Isopoda, and 2 Mysidacea. Limnomysis benedeni is the first time in Turkish Mysidacea fauna. In this work at the first time recorded group are Gammarus pulex pulex, Gammarus aequicauda, Gammarus uludagi, Gammarus komareki, Gammarus longipedis, Gammarus balcanicus, Echinogammarus ischnus, Orchestia stephenseni Paramysis kosswigi, Idotea baltica basteri, Idotea hectica, Sphaeroma serratum, Palaemon adspersus, Crangon crangon, Potamon ibericum tauricum and Carcinus aestuarii in the studied area. Potamon ibericum tauricum is the most encountered and widespread species. The largest collection of freshwater crayfish of Romania is preserved in “Grigore Antipa” National Museum of Natural History of Bucharest. The collection consists of 426 specimens of Astacus astacus, A. leptodactylus and Austropotamobius torrentium. Résumé. La plus grande collection d’écrevisses de Roumanie se trouve au Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle «Grigore Antipa» de Bucarest. Elle comprend 426 exemplaires appartenant à deux genres et trois espèces, Astacus astacus, A. leptodactylus et Austropotamobius torrentium. Key words: Astacidae, Romania, museum collection, catalogue. INTRODUCTION The first paper dealing with the freshwater crayfish of Romania is that of Cosmovici, published in 1901 (Bãcescu, 1967) in which it is about the freshwater crayfish from the surroundings of Iaºi. The second one, much complex, is that of Scriban (1908), who reports Austropotamobius torrentium for the first time, from Racovãþ, Bahna basin (Mehedinþi county). Also Scriban made the first comment on the morphology and distribution of the species Astacus astacus, A. leptodactylus and Austropotamobius torrentium, mentioning their distinctive features. Also, he published the first drawings of these species (cephalothorax). Entz (1912) dedicated a large study to the crayfish of Hungary, where data on the crayfish of Transylvania are included. Probably it is the amplest paper dedicated to the crayfish of the Romanian fauna from the beginning of the last century, with numerous data on the outer morphology, distinctive features between species, with more detailed figures and with the very first morphometric measures, and also with much detailed data on the distribution in Transylvania. -
Estimating the Population Size of Astacus Leptodactylus (Decapoda: Astacidae) by Mark-Recapture Technique in E₣Irdir Lake, Turkey

Accepted 13 June, 2011 The mark-recapture technique for closed populations was employed to estimate the population size and density of Astacus leptodactylus during August and September, 2005 by using minnow traps of 34 mm mesh size in Eirdir Lake. A total of 600 minnow traps were set randomly along the shoreline at approximately 3, 5 and 7 m depth. The nets were set in the late afternoon to each study depths, and were hauled the next day or after two days. The research was performed two times each month. In August, 1956 adult crayfish and in September, 2756 adult crayfish were marked by cauterization of the carapace. The recapture rates were found to be 3.5% in August and 2.3% in September, respectively. A total of 200 crayfish were randomly selected, 74 females and 126 males. The sex ratio was 1:1.7. Moreover, length and weight data gotten from 200 untagged crayfish showed that females and males differed significantly in their weight, but no significant difference was evident in the carapace length. -

www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Acute and sub‑chronic efects of copper on survival, respiratory metabolism, and metal accumulation in Cambaroides dauricus Jie Bao, Yuenan Xing, Chengcheng Feng, Shiyu Kou, Hongbo Jiang* & Xiaodong Li* Trace metal contamination in the aquatic ecosystem occurs worldwide: although copper is an essential trace metal, it is considered as a pollutant at certain levels in China. Freshwater crayfsh Cambaroides dauricus is a commercially important wild species in northeastern China, in which is an important heavy industry area. The population of C. dauricus was decreasing sharply due to the environmental pollution and human intervention over the past 20 years. However, nothing is known regarding the responses of this species to trace metal toxicants. This study aimed to determine the acute and chronic toxicity of Cu and its toxicological efects on respiratory metabolism, as well as Cu accumulation in C. dauricus. The acute (96 h) median lethal concentration (LC50) value of 32.5 mg/L was detected in C. dauricus. Then, acute (96 h; 8.24, 16.48 mg/L) and sub‑chronic (14 days; 2.06, 4.12 mg/L) exposure in Cu was investigated by estimating the oxygen consumption rate, ammonium excretion rate, and Cu accumulation. Both acute and sub-chronic Cu exposure induced an inhibition of the oxygen consumption rate and ammonium excretion rate, and thereby, an increased O:N ratio. The shift in O:N ratio indicated a metabolic substrate shift towards lipid and carbohydrate metabolism under Cu stress. Cu accumulation in the hepatopancreas and muscles throughout the study was found to be time-dependent and concentration-dependent. -
