Each year UC San Diego's honors World AIDS Day by bringing portions of the AIDS Memorial Quilt, which documents the lives of those lost. Grant travels to New Zealand, America, Ireland, Germany, South Africa, and Australia to meet intersex people that are willing to share their stories with the Gender Buffet public. The documentary is very informative and talks about a lot of issues that the intersex community faces starting from birth and on throughout their lives. In Memoriam, debi fidler October 31, 1952 - November 2, 2012 debi was one of the original people from UCSD to join the system-wide UCLGBTA that went on to fight for, and win, domestic partner and other benefits for UC employees and students which at the time was a sometimes hostile climate. debi worked in Financial Aid at UCSD and also at SDSU, SFSU, Caltech and finally Berkeley's Haas School from which she retired. While at UCSD she helped establish a nationwide resource for LGBT scholarships. A lifelong feminist and lover of women she is counted as a contributor to the social justice movement on campus that ended up in the founding of all the Campus Community Centers. She survived breast and throat cancer and was a fierce defender of women with cancer and promoted survivor movements everywhere. She survived a stroke several years ago and met that challenge with her usual strength and beautiful persistence. Her friends and family which stretch around the world were surprised at her succumbing to a fatal stoke but as usual it was done in peace amidst beloved friends.

INTRODUCTION “Despite all the achievements of civilization, the human being is still one of the most vulnerable creatures on earth.” - Vladimir Putin1 “You are alone, you are not normal”; that is how Aleksander Berezkin learned he was intersex.2 Born in 1984 in Novokuznetsk—a steel-producing town in southwestern Siberia, not unlike Pittsburgh in terms of climate and local economy3—Aleksander lived the life of an ordinary boy until his adolescence, when puberty failed to arrive. “When I was at school, my body looked visibly different from other teenagers,” Aleksander recalled.4 “I had no muscles . [n]o hair on the face. I was skinny and tall. With narrow shoulders and wide hips. Breast glands were enlarged. Sometimes people took me for a girl. I have been bullied and humiliated.”5 Desperate for answers and relief from the merciless taunting and social ostracism, at the age of seventeen Aleksander submitted to a genetic test that revealed the truth. "Horrible Mothers in Mémère's Kitchen: Queer identity in New England Franco America" Susan Pinette University of Maine Franco Americani identity has always had lots to do with mothers. Whether negotiating allegiance to the Quebec motherland, remaining faithful to the French mother tongue or seeing the maternal body as the site of social reproduction, Franco Americans are intricately linked to mothers. While this is true for other cultural identities as well, this is particularly the case for New England Franco Americans who came from a French speaking Canada where, as Lori Martin notes, “le mythe de la mère y a atteint des proportions inégalées” (“The myth of the mother reached unparalleled heights”) (48). It comes perhaps as no surprise therefore that Franco American writers draw from this deeply rooted myth of the mother to create a highly, charged representative symbol. Herbert Gans affirms that for ethnic identity, especially in the third generations, “Expressive behavior can take many forms, but it often involves the use of symbols…Ethnic symbols are frequently individual cultural practices which are taken from the older ethnic culture; they are 'abstracted' from that culture and pulled out of its original moorings, so to speak, to become stand-ins for it” (9).
