The Story of Queer Cinema explores the emergence of gay and lesbian films from the beginning of the gay rights movement in the 1960s to the “New Queer Cinema” of the 90s, the proliferation and influence of gay and lesbian films festivals, the discovery by the film business of the gay market; the explosion of gay images in the mainstream media and the current phenomenon of all things gay. The story of gay and lesbian cinema is closely related to the world surrounding it, and the use of popular culture is a backdrop against which the film examines important cultural, political and social moments- and movements that intersect with gay life. “Sex on the screen means something different for gay and lesbian audiences than for straight audiences because we’ve never been allowed to see it. If bodies that we can’t imagine being together are together, if women are rolling around in bed, if men are doing something more in the locker room than just simply taking a shower…all of these groundbreaking scenes of explicit sexuality have a meaning and a power that go beyond similar scenes for heterosexuals. It has to be there for audiences because for so long we were told ‘Oh no, they aren’t really gay because we have no proof that they ever did that’ there’s a sense that’s like – show me the money!” - B. -

Homophobia and Transphobia Illumination Project Curriculum Andrew S. Forshee, Ph.D., Early Education & Family Studies Portland Community College Portland, Oregon INTRODUCTION Homophobia and transphobia are complicated topics that touch on core identity issues. Most people tend to conflate sexual orientation with gender identity, thus confusing two social distinctions. Understanding the differences between these concepts provides an opportunity to build personal knowledge, enhance skills in allyship, and effect positive social change. GROUND RULES (1015 minutes) Materials: chart paper, markers, tape. Due to the nature of the topic area, it is essential to develop ground rules for each student to follow. Ask students to offer some rules for participation in the postperformance workshop (i.e., what would help them participate to their fullest). Attempt to obtain a group consensus before adopting them as the official “social contract” of the group. Useful guidelines include the following (Bonner Curriculum, 2009; Hardiman, Jackson, & Griffin, 2007): Respect each viewpoint, opinion, and experience. Use “I” statements – avoid speaking in generalities. The conversations in the class are confidential (do not share information outside of class). Set own boundaries for sharing. Share air time. Listen respectfully. No blaming or scapegoating. Focus on own learning. Clear definitions also provide a context and platform for discussion. Homophobia: a psychological term originally developed by Weinberg (1973) to define an irrational hatred, anxiety, and or fear of homosexuality. -

I have varied the slide shows according to the audience and, to challenge myself, asked various questions about my art. What fresh visual connections can I make? How do my newest images relate to earlier series? Shall I focus on indi- vidual heroes and heroines—community leaders—or on dramatic historical events that galvanized people to rethink their lives and demand policy changes? Is it appro- priate to show body images and surgery? Should I focus on youth and relationships? What about speaking of my life as an artist and how it connects to the transgender community? Long before I knowingly met a transgender person, I pondered such questions as, Why are certain character traits assigned to men or to women? and Are these traits in different directions except for one person, Vicky West, immutable or culturally defined? Ude, Jr., Esq., Mazzoni Center Dear Senators: Thank you for the opportunity to discuss barriers in Pennsylvania for members of the transgender community to legally change their name and gender. I am submitting this written testimony to supplement the comprehensive memorandum and testimony submitted by Dechert LLP from Mazzoni Center and several other organizations. Mazzoni Center is a Philadelphia nonprofit organization whose mission is provide quality comprehensive health and wellness services in an LGBTQ-focused environment, while preserving the dignity and improving the quality of life of the individuals we serve. Our services include comprehensive primary and preventive care and a range of other services specifically for transgender, gender non-binary and gender expansive individuals. I direct our legal services program, which provides direct legal services to, and advocacy on behalf of, low-income LGBTQ individuals in a range of areas. Each year, more than half of the requests for assistance we receive – hundreds each year – are from transgender, nonbinary, and gender-expansive people seeking help with the name change process, with changing gender- markers on identification, or both. Our resources limit our capacity to provide direct representation outside of Philadelphia, but individuals and attorneys contact us for information or assistance on these issues from all throughout Pennsylvania; in the past decade, we have been contacted for by people in 57 of Pennsylvania’s 67 counties. -

China has been strengthening its monopoly of public opin- ions on the internet in recent years. Consequently, increasing grassroots public opinion lead- ers have left popular digital networks. However, activists striving for women’s rights are still popular on Weibo. How do Chinese feminists use digital networks to serve their goal? What does the increasingly strict internet control mean to them? This paper takes the perspectives of individual feminist microbloggers on Weibo, using qualitative interview as the research method, to deepen the understanding of digitally networked feminist activism in an authori- tarian context and feminists’ use of digital networks. It focuses on the following aspects: China’s digital feminists’ relationship with the digital networks that they use, their digital feminist identity and their experiences with the authoritarian system. What is feminism in the Chinese cultural realm? How does one define, outline, understand, develop, interpret, and represent women and feminism in the Chinese cultural realm? These questions are what scholars will always converse over in the spirit of intellectual dialogue.1 However, the question of “which version of [feminist] history is going to be told to the next generation” in the Chinese cultural realm is what cannot wait for diverse scholars to finish arguing over?2 How to teach younger generations about women and feminism in the Chinese cultural realm and how to define, categorize, summarize, or explain women and feminism in the Chinese cultural realm cannot wait for diverse scholars to articulate an answer that satisfies everyone. How women and feminists in the Chinese cultural realm, especially non- Mainland areas, should identify themselves cannot wait until this debate is over. Because anthologies are generally intended for classroom use, I would like to analyze a number of feminist anthologies to illustrate the unbalanced representation of women and feminism in the Chinese cultural realm. INTRODUCTION “Despite all the achievements of civilization, the human being is still one of the most vulnerable creatures on earth.” - Vladimir Putin1 “You are alone, you are not normal”; that is how Aleksander Berezkin learned he was intersex.2 Born in 1984 in Novokuznetsk—a steel-producing town in southwestern Siberia, not unlike Pittsburgh in terms of climate and local economy3—Aleksander lived the life of an ordinary boy until his adolescence, when puberty failed to arrive. “When I was at school, my body looked visibly different from other teenagers,” Aleksander recalled.4 “I had no muscles . [n]o hair on the face. I was skinny and tall. With narrow shoulders and wide hips. Breast glands were enlarged. Sometimes people took me for a girl. I have been bullied and humiliated.”5 Desperate for answers and relief from the merciless taunting and social ostracism, at the age of seventeen Aleksander submitted to a genetic test that revealed the truth. While typical males have the chromosomes XY, Aleksander’s were XXY; he was diagnosed with a variation of Klinefelter syndrome, in which an extra X chromosome inhibits the body’s production of testosterone and leads to the development of stereotypically feminine traits in males.6 But Aleksander received little comfort from his intersex diagnosis, nor Copyright © 2019 by Maggie J.
