In November I was privileged to spend four days in Westminster working with David Ruffley and his team. The first meeting I attended centred on super-injunctions, which was particularly interesting and politically controversial, as it featured a number of high-profile bloggers, like Paul Staines. The following morning there was a televised Home Affairs Select Committee in which the spat between Brodie Clark, former head of the UK Border Force, and Theresa May was the focal point and I managed to grab a seat at the back to hear Clark's statement. Well done to all of them and thank you to Mr Kemp, our Enrichment Co-ordinator, our science staff and our students who helped.

We were delighted to welcome back Adrian Williams as Chairman of the William and Ellen Vinten Trust this month. The Japan 2011 trippers had a life-changing experi- ence. Travelling right across the country, with a series of homestays, the year eleven group saw all the famous sights, practised their language, met partners they had host- ed previously and were immersed in a completely different culture. It made us realise how many soldiers died and how many still haven't been found or whose names were not known. It also showed us how many different religions the soldiers belonged to. We now know how much we owe them.

Jordan Allen, Toby Jeffery, Danny Lines, William Lockyear, Guy Rodwell and James Wappett wrote:

We were shocked at the age of some of the soldiers especially when we were told that the youngest soldier to die was our age. The white headstones made it seem more respectful. The visit showed that the forces cared about their comrades. It really brought home how awful life was for the soldiers in the First World War: life in the trenches must have been cramped and horrible.

We thank Mrs Middleditch, Mr Kemp and Mrs Rossi for organising and accompanying the trip.

The 2011 year twelve geography group was commended by the staff as the best ever. Students looked at the urban environment in Sheffield and carried out three days' fieldwork in the Peak District. We thank Mr O'Leary, Mrs Bradbury and Mr Fisher for making the visit possible. As always, the year nine visit to the Battlefields was a poignant, moving tour which brought home to the students the horrors of war. The group laid a wreath in memory of our former students during the daily ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres. The Performing Arts news for November It has been another busy month with auditions for 'Phantom of the Opera'; rehearsals for the sixth form play and for all the music for Christmas; support to events in the town; participation in the Suffolk Festival and individual success in dance. In addition, this month's theatre trip was to see Mike Leigh's new play 'Grief' in Cambridge, twenty two students are finishing their Arts Award at bronze, silver and gold level for moderation in early January and sixty students from across all five year groups continue to enjoy drama club each week. Dancers enjoy lots of success Well done to Katy Bent-Marshall, Paris Moulds, Olivia Scott, Danielle Stanton, Grace Stoten, Emily Thomas, Katie Thomas and Cara Wilcock who took part in the solo, duet, trio and troupe sections of the Suffolk Dance Festival held in Kesgrave this month. All the girls were very successful and received highly positive comments from the adjudicator. A new Drama Project Tender Age is a research and development project, supported by Arts Council England and the Theatre Royal, Bury St Edmunds. The project brings together older people and young adults creatively to explore what divides and what connects these generations. Themes explored include “Do You See Me?” “Can You Hear Me?”; and what younger and older people think of each other!. As part of the project, students spent a Sunday at the Guildhall on a series of workshops with older people. Well done to Esther Colman, Theo Harris, Hannah O’Brien and Isabel Tennant who took part.
