4th Prep to 5th Prep Summer Reading 2017

May 22, 2017

Dear Students,

Reading year-round is a key step to becoming a great reader and a lifelong learner. Reading boosts critical thinking, increases vocabulary, and improves memory and writing skills. Reading during the summer ensures that you do not lose the literacy skills you gained throughout the school year.

All students are required to read at least one book during the summer to foster the skills described above. Choose one book from those listed below, and complete the assignment described below. This assignment will be collected the first week of school, and will serve as your first project grade of 5th Prep.

Sincerely,

Your 5th Grade Language Arts Teacher

If handwritten, you may write in cursive or print, however if must be neat and legible. Illustrations should be thoughtful, creative, neat and colored.

Book Choices

o The One and Only by Katherine Applegate Animals Lexile Level: 570

Winner of the 2013 and a #1 New York Times bestseller, this stirring and unforgettable novel from renowned author Katherine Applegate celebrates the transformative power of unexpected friendship. Inspired by the true story of a captive gorilla known as Ivan, this illustrated novel is told from the point of view of Ivan himself.

o Flora & Ulysses: the illuminated adventures by Kate DiCamillo Fantasy Lexile Level: 520

Winner of the 2014 Newbery Medal. Holy unanticipated occurrences! A cynic meets an unlikely superhero in a genre-breaking new novel by master storyteller Kate DiCamillo. It begins, as the best superhero stories do, with a tragic accident that has unexpected consequences. The squirrel never saw the vacuum cleaner coming, but self-described cynic Flora Belle Buckman, who has read every issue of the comic book “Terrible Things Can Happen to You!” is just the right person to step in and save him. What neither can predict is that Ulysses (the squirrel) has been born anew, with powers of strength, flight, and misspelled poetry — and that Flora will be changed too, as she discovers the possibility of hope and the promise of a capacious heart. A laugh-out-loud story filled with eccentric, endearing characters and featuring an exciting new format — a novel interspersed with comic-style graphic sequences and full-page illustrations, all rendered in black-and-white by up-and-coming artist K. G. Campbell.

o Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper Realistic Fiction Lexile Level: 700

Melody is not like most people. She cannot walk or talk, but she has a photographic memory; she can remember every detail of everything she has ever experienced. She is smarter than most of the adults who try to diagnose her and smarter than her classmates in her integrated classroom—the very same classmates who dismiss her as mentally challenged, because she cannot tell them otherwise. But Melody refuses to be defined by cerebral palsy. And she’s determined to let everyone know it…somehow.
