OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION CATHOLIC SCHOOL

SUMMER READING LIST 2020-2021 ENTERING FOURTH GRADE

Your summer reading assignment is to read three books:

1. The Boys Start the War by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor • Be prepared to discuss the book and participate in class projects. • These projects will be your first grades for 4th grade reading.

2. One book from the fourth grade Battle of the Books List • Please complete a Battle of the Books log sheet • On the log sheet, please describe the setting, the main characters, the plot, and your recommendation of the book. Please be thorough with your descriptions. • The log sheet is due on the first day of school to your reading teacher for a grade.

3. Finally, read another book of your choice and complete the Book Review Assignment. It can certainly be another book from the Battle of the Books list, but you are doing a Book Review with this book so please make sure that it is a book that is appealing to you.

Book Review Assignment

Directions: Prepare a short oral presentation (less than 5 minutes) that reviews the book for your classmates. You may choose to video record your book review instead of giving an oral presentation in class. Video files should be brought to the first day of school on a flash drive.

• The book should be a book that you enjoyed and would recommend. Do not review a book you would not recommend to classmates!

• Your presentation must include:

o The title and author of the book.

o Why you chose to pick it up and read the book.

o A description of the main character.

o The problem the main character struggles within the book.

o What you think the author is trying to teach you, the reader, about life?

o What did you love about the book? o Who should read this book? What other books are similar to it?

• Do Not give away the ending in your presentation. Hopefully other readers will want to read the book based on your review!
