2020 Summer Reading English 5 Becoming a Reflective Writer Rising fifth graders will read two books and complete two assignments. Students should bring both assignments to class on the first day of school. Book #1: Writer’s NotebookWord After Word After Word by Patricia MacLachlan. We will use this book during our shared reading time and it will help launch Writers Workshop, Assignment 1: Writer’s Notebook After reading Word After Word After Word by Patricia MacLachlan, After reading the book, please respond to the following prompts: Do you think of yourself as a writer? Why or why not? If you do write, why and how often do you write? If you do not write, what would inspire or you start writing? If possible, please complete this assignment in your composition notebook that is on your supply list which you will use for your writing throughout the year writer’s notebook for our year together. Book #2: Choose one book from the list below. All books are connected around the theme of transitions and will serve as a springboard into our first-class novel. Applegate Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper Rules by Cynthia Lord Assignment 2: Letter to Mrs. Arias After you have completed your summer reading novels, write a letter to me, Mrs. Arias, your new fifth-grade teacher. Your letter should be two paragraphs and include the following information: • 1. Introduce yourself. What subjects do you like in school? What do you do for fun? What is interesting or special about you? Include anything else that you would like to share with me. • 2. Write about the book you choose for this assignment. Tell us the name and author of your book. Give a short summary of the story. What lessons did you learn from the story? Did you like the book? Why or why not? Be sure to use a friendly letter format when writing your letter (date, greeting, body, closing, and signature). Please be sure to sign your letter with your first and last name. .
