REFLECTION REFLECTION The Freedom Riders of the Civil Rights Movement “I’m taking a trip on the Greyhound bus line, I’m riding the front seat to New Orleans this time. Hallelujah I’m a travelin’, hallelujah ain’t it fine, Hallelujah I’m a travelin’ down freedom’s main line.” This reflection is based on the PBS documentary, “Freedom Riders,” which is a production of The American Experience. SUMMARY OF THE FILM From May to November 1961, over 400 Americans, both black and white, witnessed the power of nonviolent activism for civil rights. The Freedom Riders were opposing the racist Jim Crow laws of the South by riding bus lines from Washington, D.C., down through the Deep South. These Freedom Rides were organized by the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE). Despite the violence, threats, and extraor- dinary racism they faced, people of conscience, both black and white, Northern and Southern, rich and poor, old and young, carried out the Freedom Rides as a testimony to the basic truth all Americans hold: that the government must protect the constitutional rights of its people. Finally, on September 22, 1961, segregation on the bus lines ended. This was arguably the movement that changed the force and effectiveness of the Civil Rights Movement as a whole and set the stage for other organized movements like the Selma to Montgomery March and the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. AWARD-WINNING FILMMAKER CHRIS SCHMIDT JOINS PBS’S SCIENCE SERIES NOVA AS SENIOR PRODUCER BOSTON, MA (April 27, 2012) —NOVA announced today that documen- tary filmmaker Chris Schmidt will join the science series as a senior pro- ducer on April 30, 2012. Schmidt joins Senior Executive Producer Paula S. Produced for PBS by the Apsell during a time of expansion for the venerable science series, which is WGBH Science Unit produced for PBS by WGBH Boston. Currently in its 39th season, NOVA remains the most-watched primetime science series on American television. “We’re extremely excited to have Chris join the NOVA team,” said Apsell, Senior Executive Producer of NOVA and NOVA scienceNOW and Director of the WGBH Science Unit who oversees on-air productions and initiatives beyond the broadcasts. “Chris brings to NOVA a proven track record of producing compelling and memorable television.” Schmidt is an Emmy Award-nominated filmmaker, who for the last 10 years has worn multiple hats for Powderhouse Productions: executive producer, writer, director and editor, to name a few. He has traveled the world to pro- duce and direct movies and television programs for the Discovery Channel, the History Channel, National Geographic and PBS. On Monday, June 8, AMERICAN EXPERIENCE presents The Living Weapon, a harrowing tale of ambition, scientific discovery, and the lengths to which one man would go to protect his country. From producer John Rubin, this one-hour documentary offers an unprecedented look at more than two decades of closed-door meetings, secret test sites, determined scientists, and human subjects that attempted to turn some of the world's most potent germs into some of the world's most effective weapons. In 1942, the United States government, sanctioned by President Franklin Roosevelt, began a highly classified program to research and develop bioweapons - the first in a series of steps, motivated by fear of powerful enemies that brought the United States to a point of no return. The Freedom Rides of 1961 “If history were a neighborhood, slavery would be around the corner and the Freedom Rides would be on your doorstep.” ~ Mike Wiley, writer & director of “The Parchman Hour” Overview Throughout 1961, more than 400 engaged Americans rode south together on the “Freedom Rides.” Young and old, male and female, interracial, and from all over the nation, these peaceful activists risked their lives to challenge segregation laws that were being illegally enforced in public transportation throughout the South. In this lesson, students will learn about this critical period of history, studying the 1961 events within the context of the entire Civil Rights Movement. Through a PowerPoint presentation, deep discussion, examination of primary sources, and watching PBS’s documentary, “The Freedom Riders,” students will gain an understanding of the role of citizens in shaping our nation’s democracy. In culmination, students will work on teams to design a Youth Summit that teaches people their age about the Freedom Rides, as well as inspires them to be active, engaged community members today. This deep dive into the world of a beloved musical giant features a mix of never before seen footage and new interviews with Quincy Jones, Carlos Santana, Clive Davis, Wayne Shorter, Marcus Miller, Ron Carter, family members and others. The film’s producers were granted access to the Miles Davis estate providing a great depth of material to utilize in this two-hour documentary airing February 25 at 9pm. Fans of Death in Paradise rejoice! The series will continue to solve crimes on a weekly basis for several more months ahead. Season 7 wraps this month, but Season 8 returns in March. Season 9 is currently airing on BBC in the United Kingdom. The brand-new season travels across the pond and lands on the WITF schedule this summer. I had the opportu- nity to see some of the first images from SERIES MARATHON the new season and it looks like there are some changes in store! AN ASPECT OF AMERICAN RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE The subject given me is Characteristics of the American Religi- ous Experience. Because I think such characteristics, as these have been concretely specified and illustrated in Professor Martin Marty's recent book (The Righteous Empire, [New York: Dial Press, 1971]) could be neither amplified nor further illuminated by any effort of mine, I have elected to ask, as it were, the 'previous question'. Is it possible so to examine the theater of this madly variegated experi- ence to ascertain why only these characteristics and not others are present in virtually all the religious associations that have been formed on the North American Continent? The occasion to undertake the reflections that are summarized in this essay was not the question as a wandering query but, as is so often the case among us, a definite teaching assignment. As follows: In the Autumn quarter of 1968 a staff-course, The Amer- ican Experience, was introduced into the curriculum at the Divinity School of my university. The course was required of all students in the professional program, was a double-credit course (i.e., it oc- cupied the space of two normal three hour per week courses), it involved three lectures per week and one long tutorial session—each of these small sections presided over by an advanced graduate student—and was staffed by three members of the faculty. The genesis of the course lay in the quest of the faculty for a course which would introduce students from many backgrounds, traditions and regions, via a focused attention upon a specific body of data peculiar to American life, to what might be called the 'particularity' of the experiences of their fathers in this place.
