Henry Mcneal Turner
Henry McNeal Turner Nationalist, Repatriationist, PanAfricanist, Minister, Author SECTION ONE SOURCE: https://blackpast.org/aah/turner-henry-mcneal-1834-1915 Black Nationalist, repatriationist, and minister, Henry M. Turner was 31 years old at the time of the Emancipation. Turner was born in 1834 in Newberry Courthouse, South Carolina to free black parents Sarah Greer and Hardy Turner. The self-taught Turner by the age of fifteen worked as a janitor at a law firm in Abbeville, South Carolina. The firm’s lawyers noted his abilities and helped with his education. However, Turner was attracted to the church and after being converted during a Methodist religious revival, decided to become a minister. He joined the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church and became a licensed minister in 1853 at the age of 19. Turner soon became an itinerant evangelist traveling as far as New Orleans, Louisiana. By 1856 he married Eliza Peacher, the daughter of a wealthy African American house builder in Columbia, South Carolina. The couple had fourteen children but only four of them survived into adulthood. In 1858 Turner entered Trinity College in Baltimore, Maryland where he studied Latin, Greek, Hebrew and theology. Two years later he became the pastor of the Union Bethel Church in Washington, D.C. Turner cultivated friendships with important Republican Congressional figures including Ohio Congressman Benjamin Wade, Pennsylvania Congressman Thaddeus Stevens, and Massachusetts Senator Charles Sumner. Turner had already become a national figure when in 1863 at the age of 29 he was appointed by President Lincoln to the position of Chaplain in the Union Army. -

Know Your Church Within sight of the Nations Capital at the corner of 11th and M Streets, N.W., in Washington, DC. stands the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church Financial Department. This impressive building is named in honor of Dr. Joseph Columbus McKinney, an outstanding layperson. “Joe”, as he preferred to be called, was elected Treasurer of the AME Church in 1972 and served with distinction. From humble beginnings in Magnolia, North Carolina, he excelled in all that he did as a churchman and in his career with the Federal Government as an electrical engineer. After moving to Washington, DC, he and his family joined Ward Memorial AME Church and became intricately involved in Church activities. Joe served 20 years as President of the Second Episcopal District Lay Organization and was a consultant to the Connectional Lay Organization (CLO) among his many church-wide leadership roles and significant accomplishments for the Worldwide AME Church. Following is the chronology of the significant events in the history of the AME Church Financial Department including those related to the work of Dr. McKinney. Significant Events in the History of the AME Church Financial Department 1844 - Collected two cents a month from each member to support a general fund and the Book Concern. 1868 - Collected one dollar annually from each member to support the Book Steward, Wilberforce University and the work of each annual conference. 1872 - Financial Department established as the general church treasury. Rev. J. H. W. Burley elected first Financial Secretary and office located in Washington, D.C. Eight other ministers became Fin. -

This was partly due to the lack of denominational archives, and the sense that historical inventory and archival storage could be a financial drain to the AME Zion Church such it could not maintain its own archives and indeed, retaining official records was kept at a far from super or archival level. -

Warner, CLO Online Administrator BISHOP EDWARD WATERS By Robert Thomas Matthews, III Director of Public Relations – Sixth Episcopal District Lay Organization, AMEC Historiographer of the West Atlanta District Lay Organization, AMEC Bishop Edward Waters was born, a slave, on March 15, 1780 at West River, MD. At an early age, he came to Baltimore and joined the A. M. E. Church. He was subsequently ordained Deacon and Elder after which he served in the Baltimore area. Waters was elected and consecrated as the Third Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church on May 8, 1836 during the Fifth Quadrennial Session of the General Conference--not including the Organizing Convention of 1816, which was also held in Philadelphia, PA. However, among the unusual historical biographic annals and documents, we find a most unusual entry concerning Bishop Edward Waters, the Third, elected and consecrated Bishop of African Methodist Episcopal Church. Although our school of higher education in Florida bears his name, Bishop Water’s legacy and history following his election and consecration to the bishopric, as reported by Bishop Daniel Alexander Payne (6th Bishop), bears this note: “The same year of his election, Bishop Brown took him with him, to all the Conferences except the Western Conference, thus giving him some idea of the field of labor. -

Quinn placed his hands upon the head of Daniel Alexander Paynel on May 13, 1852, ordaining him as a bishop in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Through the imposition of hands, Payne traced his ministeriallineage back to John Wesley. 2 He revered his ,\' Wesleyan heritage and sought to use Wesley's teachings to support his ideas , . and programs for the church. From its inception in 1816 the A. M. E. Church boasted ·of having its roots in historic Methodism, and Payne in tended to 'keep the church in that tradition. He articulated Methodist polity .1 and theology among the blacks until his death in 1893. Although Payne extolled the virtues ofWesleyan tradition,3 the rela I 1,. tionship between white and black Methodists was not always cordial. As early as 1787 blacks found themselves unwantedin the Methodist Episcopal Church.
