Among other things Charleston had the scenic qualities for the scenario. From the begin­ ning, in at least one major aspect, Charleston had the upper hand on sister cities. It was blessed with favorable natural surroundings and, therefore, pioneered as a thriving, bustling, seaport city of the Southland . *■ Unique in many ways, but also quite similar to the people of num­ erous other Southern urban centers in 1811, Charleston's population thought of the city as the "Queen” of an enviable slave system that seemed to gain momentum as its tentacles spread both south and west. Indeed, South Carolina’s city of pride occupied a very special place in infant America. Because of this, the city fathers showed more than ordinary interest in this carefully guarded distinction,2 Equally significant, the inhabitants considered Charleston the "Capital of the South" and consequently displayed a sense of jealousy as other urban centers made inroads into the city’s supremacy. Even so, Charleston long enjoyed a rather auspicious ascendency because it 1 2 was sprawled astride the crossroads of slavocracy, with the added ad­ vantage of a spacious harbor and access to the back country. As if this was not enough, Charlestonians could boast of a pleasant climate, and also, environmental beauty. No wonder the place was a favored re­ sort attraction for rice and cotton planters "who built expensive and tasteful town houses on the blue bay and gave special polish and soph­ istication" to the White society of the city. Vastly different but of equal importance was the Black community that sharply defined the world of Daniel Alexander Payne. He was born February 24, 1811.^ It could be said that one of the more fortunate experiences of Payne was to begin life in Charleston. Here was the kind of community and variety of challenges necessary to kindle the fires of his budding genius. Of even more importance, a Black popula­ tion functioned as a part of this busy center of activity, keenly aware of problems of racial adjustment, and already by 1811 vigorously assert­ ing itself.^ Charleston had more Black residents than White in the early decades of the nineteenth century. According to the 1820 census the nonslave and slave Black population together numbered 13,127 out of a total of 24,780."’ Blacks continued to represent the major proportion of the in­ habitants up to the eve of the Civil War. In terms of Daniel Payne’s future this meant that he was ushered into a community where approx­ imately fifteen hundred nonslave Blacks had developed institutions to meet the special needs of Black people. This institutional framework furnished Daniel with a springboard for his subsequent educational and 3 religious achievements. Possessed with indomitable will and faith, he was able to conquer serious physical handicaps, challenge a degrading racism and exemplify a kind of physical and moral courage seen only in the great and the near great. Payne began life as a pint size baby and retained a diminutive stature all of his days, never weighing more than one hundred pounds.0 In spite of his thin, boney, tubercular appearance and the added handi­ cap of frequent physical mishaps, Payne early learned the secret of strength preservation, and thus was able to live a long life filled with active, arduous, difficult tasks. In the main, however, it was Charleston that conditioned him for the numerous endeavors that spanned almost a century and brought

You too have laboured to produce this; I hope I have done your labours justice. Abstract Herein we develop category-theoretic tools for understanding network- style diagrammatic languages. The archetypal network-style diagram- matic language is that of electric circuits; other examples include signal flow graphs, Markov processes, automata, Petri nets, chemical reaction networks, and so on. The key feature is that the language is comprised of a number of components with multiple (input/output) terminals, each possibly labelled with some type, that may then be connected together along these terminals to form a larger network. The components form hyperedges between labelled vertices, and so a diagram in this language forms a hypergraph. We formalise the compositional structure by intro- ducing the notion of a hypergraph category. Network-style diagrammatic languages and their semantics thus form hypergraph categories, and se- mantic interpretation gives a hypergraph functor. The first part of this thesis develops the theory of hypergraph categories. In particular, we introduce the tools of decorated cospans and corela- tions. Decorated cospans allow straightforward construction of hyper- graph categories from diagrammatic languages: the inputs, outputs, and their composition are modelled by the cospans, while the `decorations' specify the components themselves.

Crowther, Adams State University, USA Keith Harper, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, USA This paper explores the race and religion during the Progressive Era by examining the relationships between Richard Henry Boyd and Elias Camp Morris, two leading members of the nascent National Baptist Convention, an African American denomination, and Boyd’s relationship with James Marion Frost, the Corresponding Secretary of the white Southern Baptist Convention. Their interactions highlight the contours and limitations of ecclesiastical activity within and across the color line in the early 20th Century. Keywords: National Baptist Convention, race, African-Americans On February 2, 1916, Richard Henry Boyd, the African American publishing dynamo and entrepreneur, sent a twelve page epistle to James Marion Frost, the Corresponding Secretary of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Sunday School Board, the nascent, but soon-to-be mammoth publishing arm of white missionary Baptists in the South. The professional form of the missive only superficially masked the emotion and message of what Boyd revealed to his white counterpart. The National Baptist Convention, the nation’s largest organization of African American Baptists, was in the throes of schism. In writing this letter, Boyd engaged in a ―heart to heart talk‖ with Frost ―over this matter,‖ whereby he offered his version of recent events (Boyd, February 2, 1916).

Turner was 31 years old at the time of the Emancipation. Turner was born in 1834 in Newberry Courthouse, South Carolina to free black parents Sarah Greer and Hardy Turner. The self-taught Turner by the age of fifteen worked as a janitor at a law firm in Abbeville, South Carolina. The firm’s lawyers noted his abilities and helped with his education. However, Turner was attracted to the church and after being converted during a Methodist religious revival, decided to become a minister. He joined the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church and became a licensed minister in 1853 at the age of 19. Turner soon became an itinerant evangelist traveling as far as New Orleans, Louisiana. By 1856 he married Eliza Peacher, the daughter of a wealthy African American house builder in Columbia, South Carolina. The couple had fourteen children but only four of them survived into adulthood. In 1858 Turner entered Trinity College in Baltimore, Maryland where he studied Latin, Greek, Hebrew and theology. Two years later he became the pastor of the Union Bethel Church in Washington, D.C. Turner cultivated friendships with important Republican Congressional figures including Ohio Congressman Benjamin Wade, Pennsylvania Congressman Thaddeus Stevens, and Massachusetts Senator Charles Sumner. Turner had already become a national figure when in 1863 at the age of 29 he was appointed by President Lincoln to the position of Chaplain in the Union Army.
