    Population 2010 Population Structure 2009 Number of persons aged under 15 in Finland’s population lowest in over 100 years According to Statistics Finland’s statistics on the population structure there were 888,323 persons aged under 15 in Finland’s population at the end of 2009. The number is the lowest since 1895. The size of the population under the age of 15 has been decreasing continuously since 1994. At the end of 1977, there were still one million persons aged under 15 in the Finnish population. The size of the population under the age of 15 was at its largest in 1959 when it was 1.35 million. Number of persons aged under 15 in Finland’s population in 1875–2009 On 31 December 2009, the total population of Finland was 5,351,427 in which 2,625,067 were men and 2,726,360 women. In the course of 2009, Finland’s population grew by 25,113 persons. For the third successive year migration gain from abroad contributed more to the increase of population than natural growth. During 2009, the number of persons aged 65 and over in the population increased by good 18,000 and totalled 910,441 at the end of 2009. The largest age cohort in Finland’s population was persons born in 1948. At the end of 2009, they numbered 82,738. Persons over 100 years of age numbered 566, of whom 82 were men and 484 women. General Overview Finland (in Finnish Suomi) is a republic in northern Europe, bounded on the north by Norway, on the east by Russia, on the south by the Gulf of Finland and Estonia, on the south-west by the Baltic Sea and on the west by the Gulf of Bothnia and Sweden. Nearly one third of the country lies north of 2 2 the Arctic Circle. The area of Finland, including 31 557 km of inland water, totals 338 000 km . The terrain is generally level, hilly areas are more prominent in the north and mountains are found only in the extreme north-west. The average July temperature in the capital Helsinki on the southern coast is 17 °C. The February average in Helsinki is about -5.7 °C. The corresponding figures at Sodankylä (Lapland) in the northern Finland are 14.1 °C and -13.6 °C. Precipitation (snow and rain) averages about 460 mm in the north and 710 mm in the south. Snow covers the ground for four to five months a year in the south, and about seven months in the north. Finland has a population of 5.16 million (1998) and average population density of 17 per km2 of land. Historical population data is shown in Table 1. The predicted annual population growth rate between the years 1998 and 2010 is 0.21 %. More than two thirds of the population reside in the southern third of the country. In Finland the total primary energy consumption1 per capita was about 60 % higher than the European Union average (according to 1996 statistics) and about 35 % higher than the OECD average.

The load factors of nuclear power plants have been high, radioactive emissions low and the price of nuclear electricity competitive. In addition, detailed plans exist for the final disposal of nuclear waste as well as for the financing of final disposal, and the implementation of final disposal has already been started with the authorities regulating nuclear waste management arrangements at all levels. Deregulation of the electricity market has meant increasing trade and co-operation, with both the other Nordic countries and the other EU Member States. In May 2002, the Finnish Parliament approved the application for a decision in principle on the construction of the fifth nuclear power plant unit in Finland. In December 2003, Teollisuuden Voima Oy concluded an agreement for the supply of the new nuclear power plant unit with a consortium formed by the French- German Framatome ANP and the German Siemens. The new unit, which will be built at Olkiluoto, is a pressurised water reactor having a net electrical output of about 1600 MW. The total value of the project is ca. 3 billion Euros, including investments connected with the development of infrastructure and waste management. The objective is to connect the new unit to the national grid in 2009. When in operation, the unit will increase the share of nuclear energy of Finnish electricity consumption, currently some 26%, to a little more than one third, and decrease Finnish carbon dioxide emissions by more than 10%.

Dawson, Connecticut College Abstract This article focuses on the growing prospects for a nuclear power renaissance in Europe. While accepting the conventional wisdom that the incipient renaissance is being driven by climate change and energy security concerns, we argue that it would not be possible without the pioneering work of Sweden and Finland in providing a technological and sociopolitical solution to the industry’s longstanding “Achilles’ heel”: the safe, permanent, and locally acceptable disposal of high-level radioactive waste. In this article, we track the long decline and sudden resurgence of nuclear power in Europe, examining the correlation between the fortunes of the industry and the emergence of the Swedish model for addressing the nuclear waste problem. Through an in-depth exploration of the evolution of the siting model initiated in Sweden and adopted and successfully implemented in Finland, we emphasize the importance of transparency, trust, volunteerism, and “nuclear oases”: locations already host to substantial nuclear facilities. Climate change and concerns about energy independence and security have all opened the door for a revival of nuclear power in Europe and elsewhere, but we argue that without the solution to the nuclear waste quandary pioneered by Sweden and Finland, the industry would still be waiting for the nuclear renaissance. Det betydde samtidigt att antalet medlemsföreningar i form av landsbygdsföreningar minskade från tre till två. Lokalavdelningarna hade vid slutet av år 2017 sammanlagt 1.383 lantbruks- och trädgårdslägenheter som medlemmar (aktiva). Dessa minskade med 1,1 procent från föregående år. Förbundet hade 316 stödande medlemmar (+ 0,3 %). Personmedlemmarnas antal uppgick till 3.149 (- 2,1 %). Medlemsgårdarnas sammanlagda areal utgjorde 59.045 ha åker (- 2,5 %) och 74.488 ha skog (- 0,4 %). Medlemsgårdarnas medelareal uppgick till 42,7 ha åker (+ 0,4 ha jmf. med 2016) och 53,9 ha skog (+ 0,5 ha). 307 lägenheter hade enbart skog. Om man beaktar endast aktiva gårdar som hade åkermark i besittning blir åkerns medelareal ca 12,2 hektar större, d.v.s. 54,9 ha. Det här motsvarar rätt väl medelarealen för lantbruken i Nyland. Introduction s the factors accounting for the costs of weather-related disasters (specifically, floods and storms) in recent decades and the implications of understanding these for both research and policy are considered in the Finnish context. The climatology of the pertinent weather phenomena are discussed also with some A outlook to the scenarios. Here some possible future shifts in both flood and storm types causing damages and losses are pointed out. In addition some policy issues are discussed as this seems to be another pertinent point. 2. Factors in weather-related disasters 2.1 Floods Since 1960 (Puupponen, 2006) in terms of house damage costs the three most severe flood episodes in Finland have occurred as follows. Spring 1966 – Southern Finland: This spring flood has been since 1969 the highest flood in the rivers of Southern Finland. The water equivalent of the snow at the beginning of April was still widely 200 – 250 mm which was roughly double compared with the normal value and in fact a record value. The melting of the snow was postponed to a late time point around 1 May. Consequently the recurrence value of the observed flood flows exceeded in several drainage basins 100 years in terms of a Gumbel distribution estimate. No exact damage data are available, but in relation to later damage inventories the probable cost level has been of the order of 10 million euros.

The REFEC project supports the transport corridor by mapping the cargo potential and impact of the activated corridor, and most importantly, conducting different concrete activities that aim to remove obstacles in the establishment of the Loviisa-Kunda roro connection.
