  • Band of the North Low
Low is Steve Garrington, ➣ Alan Sparhawk, and Mimi Parker BAND OF THE NORTH Low “Everything always confusion, things I could never explain,” sings Alan Sparhawk on Low’s new album Ones and Sixes, out in September on Sub Pop Records. It’s a fitting sentiment from a band that makes difficult, achingly beautiful pocket symphonies about flailing in the dark and never quite finding your way. Formed in Duluth in 1993, Low is the shared vision of Sparhawk and his wife, Mimi Parker (original member John Nichols was long ago replaced by a revolving door of bassists). Critics initially labeled the trio “slowcore” for the minor-key leanings and dripping-sap tempos of early works I Could Live in Hope and Long Division. But to say Low plays slow and sad is like describing sushi as raw fish. The more closely you lis- ten—and do listen closely, as Low is the state champ of headphone records—the more elusive its alchemy becomes. You could say Parker is a spare and skillful drummer. Or that Sparhawk’s guitar playing seesaws between distortive roars and melodies so pure they’ll bruise your heart. You might also note that despite its many creative pivots, Low remains anchored by Sparhawk and Parker’s intimate harmonies, which reveal more about love and modern life in song than a Jonathan Franzen novel could ever hope to. Discuss Low’s tendency to blend but never bend to influences as varied as rock, folk, gospel, and electronic music. Argue that it’s the only prestige band from Minnesota that’s underrated at home and properly rated everywhere else (its fans include B Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, who invited the E S group on tour in 2003, and Robert Plant, T who once recorded a cover of Low’s “Silver L Rider”).

  • Mimi Parker and Alan Sparhawk of Low on Keeping Things Interesting
To help you grow your creative practice, our website is available as an email. Subscribe October 17, 2019 - As told to T. Cole Rachel, 2625 words. Tags: Music, Inspiration, Process, Success, Creative anxiety, Focus. On keeping things interesting Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker of Low discuss what it means to radicalize your own creative process, the challenges of making a living as a working musician, and the value of always keeping the ball rolling. After the success of Double Negative, it seems like you’ve been on an endless tour. Mimi: We’ve decided we don’t go out for longer than three weeks at a time because we go crazy. Alan: We do a lot of two-week runs. Mimi: Yeah, two, two and a half weeks. We’ve also had five European trips this year, which is a record for us, I think. A lot more festivals than we’ve ever played before. Were you surprised by the rapturous reception to Double Negative? Mimi: A little bit, yeah. I mean, we knew it was unique. Alan: It was unique. Mimi: And that it was special. Alan: And that it was a challenge. When we were finishing it, we were pretty excited about it. This really was a long process and we were looking for something different. There was a lot of, “Is this actually going to work?” And then when it finally started to work, it was like, “Okay. Great! Now, will anyone like it?” We were really happy with it, but the whole time there was definitely a feeling of, “Wow! This is obviously not very commercial.

  • High Concept Music for Low Concept Minds – Part 2
High Concept Music For Low Concept Minds – Part 2 Music | Bittles’ Magazine: The music column from the end of the world: August/September New albums reviewed Part 2 If there is one thing I have learned from life so far it is that sadness can be a fine thing. It let’s you know you are human in an increasingly robotic world. Without sadness the majority of great art and literature would be shallow, soulless things. By JOHN BITTLES Imagine Steppenwolf without the crippling sense of loneliness, Van Gogh without the madness and despair, a Catcher In The Rye where Holden Caulfield has both family and friends. It simply can’t be done, as to do this would be to remove everything that makes them remarkable, tragic and true. This rule applies to music too! I know this is a personal thing, but all of my favourite songs and albums have at least a twinge of desolation, an air of anomie, or the admission that someone, somewhere doesn’t quite fit in. This is what makes them stand out and rise above simple sloganeering, crassness, or the aural equivalent of hiding your head in the sand. Thus, this week’s album reviews concentrate on the exquisite sorrow that can exist within us all. Amongst others, I’ll be reviewing the hushed confessional rock of Low, the forlorn soundtrack work of Thomas Ragsdale, the aural haze of Liz Harris‚ new group Helen and the fed-up fug of The Telescopes. But that’s not all, as we also have the menacing electronics of Senking, the slacker rock of Mac DeMarco, the dance floor ambiance of Heathered Pearls, the confessional story-telling of Destroyer, and more.

Quietus Albums Of The Year 2018, In Association With Norman Records Luke Turner , December 5th, 2018 15:19 ‘Best In Show!’ by Lisa Cradduck 2018, in case you missed the memo, marks a decade since The Quietus launched as a digital websheet. As ever, back in January, we probably thought 'what if this is the year that music goes crap?' Thankfully, against a wider climate that just gets ever bleaker, music has rewarded us with the best birthday present it could, for this year's top 100 albums of the year curiously feels like the 'most Quietus' we've ever done. What, exactly, this site is all about remains something of a mystery, even to us after a decade producing it, but that's sort of the point. We're not really fussed by hype and trends or a desperate desire to be focusing on the next hot thing - that sort of thinking is what has got the music media and industry alike into bother again and again. Instead, we focus on the marginal and ignored, the New Weird scenes of the world in a list compiled by the Quietus HQ crew Anna Wood, Christian Eede, Patrick Clarke, John Doran and myself, with help from our various genre columnists. Indeed, it's fair to say that this list is a counterblast to the algorithmic systems of music discovery that increasingly shape our culture, largely to negative effect. When we started The Quietus way back in 2008, that technology was in its infancy and the threat to the leftfield was arguably a conservative media landscape.
