The swisspeace courses take place at the premises of the . The building of the Faculty of Psychology is located close to the Basel SBB main train station (10 minutes by public transport). The course venue features modern lecture rooms and common spaces. There is no cafeteria available at this location, however our catering will provide snacks and coffee for the duration of the course. Wireless internet access is available in the whole building during course days. The building is open until 19.00h. How to get to the venue

By public transport

From the EuroAirport Basel--Freiburg, the bus line number 50 will take you to the SBB train station in only 17 minutes.

From Airport, there are regular train connections to the SBB train station taking 1 h 10 minutes. If you are travelling from airport, the journey to Basel will take you about 2h45. There are regular connections to Basel from Geneva Airport. Once you arrived at Basel railway station, you can take the tram number 1, departing every 7min, to “Basel, Hegenheimerstrasse” (Direction “Dreirosenbrücke”, on Gate D, 6 stops) when you exit the building, descend the escalators. From there it is a 2 minute walk to the Missionsstrasse 64a. Alternatively you can take bus number 30 to “Spalentor” (3 stops) from where you can either walk 7min or take tram number 3 to “Pilgerstrasse”. For precise timetables, please visit the website of SBB on www.sbb.ch. Alternatively, you can go to a SBB counter in the railway station.

The course venue can be reached by entering into the inner yard of the building at Missionstrasse 62-64.

By car

If you arrive in Basel, coming from (Zurich, Geneva, ), leave the highway on the exit “5-Basel ”. Follow the sign “Basel city”, keep left and continue the road for 2 kilometres (the exit drags on). 1 When you leave the highway, you reach a crossover. Now turn light right into the “Grosspeterstrasse” (signs in direction: “Basel- West/City”) and continue for 900m on this road.2 Continue straight across the next junction (you should see a big red building on the left side) and hold left after the junction into the “Nauentunnel” (signs: “Universitätsspital Spalentor”). When the 400m tunnel finishes3, you will reach the road “Heuwaage-Viadukt”. Follow this road straight on for 400m.4 Then you enter the road “Steingraben” which you also follow straight for 300m until you reach the next junction.5 Now keep left on the road “Schützengraben” (signs: “Universitätsspital Spalentor”) and follow the road for 500m until the next junction.6 When you reach Spalentor (“The Gate of Spalen”) turn to the left, entering Missionsstrasse7. Public transportation in Basel/

The Swiss public transportation system is excellent and you can expect trams, buses and trains to be on time. Timetables and connections are available at every stop. Furthermore, all relevant information on fares, connec- tions and stops can be found either at www.sbb.ch for train connections within Switzerland as well as to and from bordering countries or at www.bvb.ch for trams and busses within the city of Basel and its region Basel- Landschaft. There is a wide variety of offerings for reduced tickets. A short distance ticket (up to 4 stops) costs CHF 2.30.- (normal tariff, no reduction), normal distance tickets are CHF 3.80.- and valid for 1 hour. A day card costs CHF 9.90.-. Please refer to the SBB website for further information or to the information counter located in the SBB train station.

Before travelling: purchase and/or validate tickets

When you see the symbol on a train, you must bear in mind that tickets are not sold on board. Please buy and/or validate your ticket before boarding. If you do not have a valid ticket, you will have to pay a fine. If you have booked a hotel in the city of Basel and have an indication on your ticket resembling the following you do not have to buy a ticket as your confirmation is a valid ticket for your transfer from the train station or/and airport to the hotel. See below an example for such an indication in German:

In the hotel, you will receive your BaselCard allowing you to travel freely within the TNW zones 10, 11, 13 und 15 for the duration of your stay. This is sufficient for reaching the course premises by public transport without having to buy a ticket.

Living expenses

Travel, accommodation and food expenses are not included in the course fee and must be covered by the par- ticipants. A night in a regular hotel costs about 100 to 250 CHF. Two meals a day amount to approximately 40- 60 CHF in the restaurant. The most common supermarkets are “” and “Migros”.

Currency

The currency in Switzerland is the . You can withdraw Swiss Francs at ATMs at the airports in Ba- sel or Zurich, at railway stations, or in the city of Basel. You will also find counters to change your currency at the airports as well as at the railway stations. Credit and debit cards are accepted at most places. Some places accept Euros (only bills). The cafeteria of the University of Basel only accepts cash. So keep in mind to withdraw money from an ATM before lunch if you wish to eat in the cafeteria. The closest ATM is located in front of the university’s library right across the street on the left when you leave the course building.

Electricity Outlets

Switzerland has its own standard of electrical plugs, but they are compatible with two-pin Euro-plugs. However, they are not compatible with the round “schuko” type.

(2) Hotel Rochat **

The Hotel Rochat is located in a historically listed building in the old town of Basel at a central and very quiet location, close to the university and the cantonal hospital of Basel. Its location allows you to easily reach the course venue by foot (900m) or by tram 3 (in 10 min). You will find a pleasant atmosphere in the alcohol-free and non-smoking restaurant at the hotel. They serve both traditional dishes as well as daily hits at attractive prices. Internet access as well as laundry facilities are available free of charge. All hotel guests receive a free Mobility Ticket, which enables them to use the entire public transport system within Basel from the day of arri- val and during their entire stay at the hotel. A swisspeace partner hotel, the Hotel Balade is located in the heart of Kleinbasel and just a stone’s throw away from the river . Its rooms offer a very modern and stylish feeling. If you wish to have little sight- seeing tour by coming from the hotel to the swisspeace premises, you should cross the river and pass through the old town of Basel. The Swiss Quality Hotel Metropol is a swisspeace partner hotel and located at the heart of the city of Basel very close to the Basel SBB train station and a 20-minute walk of the swisspeace premises. The course venue and further points such as the trade fairground, cultural institutions, shopping areas and Basel's sights can be conveniently reached by tram. All hotel guests receive a free Mobility Ticket, which enables them to use the entire public transport system within Basel from the day of arrival and during their entire stay at the hotel. (7) Basel Youth Hostel

This youth hostel is a showpiece. The architects Buchner & Bründler signify innovative and . New features are combined with existing aspects in Basel. Together with the construction of the youth hostel, the architects were also responsible for the Swiss Pavilion at the World Expo in . An international orientation like youth hostels is therefore also normal for the architects. The swisspeace venue is reachable by public transport in 20 minutes (by Tram number 3 from “St. Alban-Tor” to “Pilgerstrasse”, from where it is a 2 min walk to the venue). (8) Hotel B&B

The B&B Hotel in (Friedlingen district) belongs to a German hotel chain and opened only in 2015. It is highly rated by guests and offers modern rooms, a breakfast buffet at additional cost and free WIFI in the whole building. Directly in the border triangle on the border with Switzerland and it is only 3min from the tram stop that takes you directly to Basel. The course venue is 25 min by public transport; the main train station is 30 min by tram and bus. Coming from Basel, you will have to purchase an extra tram ticket for the last tram station that takes you from Switzerland to . However, it is about a 5min walk from the last station in Switzerland to the hotel on the other side of the bridge.

(9) Hotel ibis Basel Bahnhof **

The Hotel ibis Basel Bahnhof belongs to an international budget hotel chain and provides modern and clean rooms. Located only a 5 min walk from the main station and 15 min from the EuroAirport Basel. By public transport you can reach all major sights in Basel quickly and reach the course venue within 10-15 min by public transport. On the other side of the station there is also ibis budget Basel City that provides similar comfort at lower prices. It is located about 500m from the Rhine, 800m from the main train station and 10 min by tram to the course venue.
