Comics and the Complicit Reader: Closure as a Transgressive Technique in Transmetropolitan by Kyle Knox An undergraduate honors thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in University Honors and English Thesis Adviser Elisabeth Ceppi Portland State University 2014 Knox 2 In 1997, comic book writer Warren Ellis and artist Darick Robertson released Transmetropolitan #1, a satirical look into a bleak, corrupt future possessing a social structure and culture uncannily similar to the present. 60 issues and five years later they finished constructing a world where technology could fabricate any necessity from scavenged refuse, grown limbs and organs could repair any physical malady, and cancer itself had been banished to distant memory (as long as one happened to have the material prosperity to pay for such a treatment). The promise of happiness and plenty that this would seem to suggest, however, contrasts sharply with the hordes of the poor, child prostitutes and genetically modified drug users pressed to the fringes of society by corrupt politicians who have ceased to even be challenged by their subjects. -

ISSN: 1989-4015 http://dx.doi.org/10.5209/rev_ANRE.2012.v4.n1.39288 Postmodern Doom and Transmetropolitan Redemption Daniel FERRERAS SAVOYE Department of Foreign Languages West Virginia University [email protected] Recibido: 19/04/2012 Aceptado: 30/05/2012 Abstract The analysis of the semiotic relationship between the city and the science fiction mode in Warren Ellis and Darick Robertson’s Transmetropolitan allows first of all for a critical introduction that challenges certain canonical certainties regarding the science fiction mode as well as the medium of comic books, and lead us to refine our terminology to better distinguish literary genres from narrative modes. Transmetropolitan can be considered as paradigmatic when it comes to the treatment of the city in the science fiction mode for it offers a variety of interpretive layers, which, when studied from the particular to the general—from micro to macro- structures—enable us to establish a vast array of connotative levels that work complementarily in order to generate a highly coherent narrative semiosphere. Ultimately, the study of the narrative function of the city as theme and background in the Transmetropolitan saga reveals its political and ethical intentionality, which transcends the ideological limitations of post-structuralist cultural constructionism and puts forth a hopeful, albeit lucid and godless positivism. 1 Dan Grubb Thesis Introduction and Literature Review Hunter S. Thompson was a big, chaotic, fiery mass of a writer. His personality, writing, behavior, and stature all attest to this truth. The tall, lanky figure with mirrored shades, cigarette holder, machine-gun speech, and widespread notoriety spent his days being larger than life. Though a handful of scholars have written of Thompson’s talent and importance, his lifestyle and celebrity has overshadowed his work in the eyes of most of the critical world. With this thesis I intend to add to the voices of Thompson scholars by providing a detailed definition of gonzo journalism. If attempting to determine Thompson’s role in literature by searching scholarly journals, one will find have trouble finding his name. And even more trouble finding him treated seriously. You’ll find him many times alongside Tom Wolfe, Joan Didion, and Norman Mailer as an example of that newfangled New Journalism. One reason Thompson hasn’t shown up in journals much is his association with New Journalism. In a 1989 survey of critical literature about New Journalism, James Stull1 found only sixteen scholarly works that address the genre. Since then, little has been added. New Journalism’s general omission from critical consideration in literary journals may exist simply because the genre is only forty years old, a baby in the eyes of academia. It is also regarded as something of a bastard child, somewhere between fiction and journalism. New Journalists are notorious for blending fact and fiction, writing through overt subjectivity, and even instigating events they report on. -

We have a form letter that we send out, which lists the people featured in the magazine this week. Someone commented last week that it seems that "Yes fans had better watch out every week", and they completely missed the point. Yes and Hawkwind are featured EVERY week precisely because of their importance to the musical community that this magazine serves. So there! Another band who turn up more in these pages than one would normally suspect from a band who broke up very nearly half a century ago is The Beatles, and their various spinoffs. The big music news in the last week is that the George Harrison back catalogue is now available for Dear Friends, streaming, and when I read that, as I subscribe to a premium streaming service, I will give no Welcome to another issue of the magazine, which prizes for guessing what I did. - as I say every week - I started on a whim, and which is still going strong three years later. What The last time I indulged in a big glut of George I like about this magazine is that I am able to be Harrison listening was in 2002 round about the as self-indulgent as I wish and - most of the time time that my mother died. -
