From that point onwards, diverse stages in the development of science fiction (sf) predicated a strong critique on human institutions and took up again the old concerns of philosophy in regard to the meaning of life and the definition of human nature. Following the so-called ‘pulp era’, the Golden Age of science fiction in the 1940s and 50s developed a blind faith on technology as the solution to the human plight, and examined diverse figures such as robotics, space opera1, cutting age weaponry and time travel as a way to explore the potentials of defamiliarized new worlds. Subsequently, the period known as the New Wave in the 1960s and early 70s produced a radical shift in the scopes of sf, and centered its attention on social and human issues rather than on sheer technology: “In place of a rationalist belief in the effectiveness of technology and machinery to solve all human problems, [with the New Wave] there came an avant-garde ‘experimental literature’ fascination with the artistic possibilities of those very problems, and in particular a paranoid aesthetic in which large systems were seen as the enemies of individual difference” (Roberts 2000: 81). Remove from water and allow to cool completely. • Clean and cook shrimp in boiling salt water. Remove shells and any remaining veins. Split in half along body and slice pork very thinly. Boil water for noodles. • Cook noodles for 8 mins plunge into cold water to stop the cooking. Drain and set aside. • Wash vegetables and spin dry. • Put warm water in a plate and dip rice paper. Approx. 5-10 seconds. Removed slightly before desired softness so you can handle it. Layer ingredients starting with lettuce and mint leaves and ending with shrimp and carrot batons. Dozois doesn't claim to have coined the term; he says he picked it up "on the street somewhere". It is probably no coincidence that Bruce Bethke wrote a short story titled "Cyberpunk" in 1980 and submitted it Asimov's mag, when Dozois may have been doing first readings, and got it published in Amazing in 1983, when Dozois was editor of1983 Year's Best SF and would be expected to be reading the major SF magazines.

Signature:……………………………………… 3 Summary Due to their characteristic themes (such as „perverse‟ desire and monstrosity) and form (incoherence and excess), exploitation films are often celebrated as inherently subversive or transgressive. I critically assess such claims through a close reading of the films of the Spanish „sex and horror‟ specialist Jess Franco. My textual and contextual analysis shows that Franco‟s films are shaped by inter-relationships between authorship, international genre codes and the economic and ideological conditions of exploitation cinema. Within these conditions, Franco‟s treatment of „aberrant‟ and gothic desiring subjectivities appears contradictory. Contestation and critique can, for example, be found in Franco‟s portrayal of emasculated male characters, and his female vampires may offer opportunities for resistant appropriation.
