Frick Award Online Balloting Begins Tomorrow and Continues Through Sept. 30 OAKLAND, Calif. – No baseball broadcaster was more decisive—or distinctive—in the big moment than the Oakland A’s late, great Bill King. Now, it’s time for his legions of ardent supporters to be just as decisive in voting him into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Starting tomorrow, fans of the legendary A’s announcer can cast their online ballot for a man who is generally regarded as the greatest broadcaster in Bay Area history when the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum’s Facebook site is activated for 2012 Ford C. Frick Award voting during the month of September. King, who passed away at the age of 78 in 2005, was the leading national vote-getter in fan balloting for the Frick Award in both 2005 and 2006. Following his death, the A’s permanently named their Coliseum broadcast facilities the “Bill King Broadcast Booth” after the team’s revered former voice. Online voting for fan selections for the award will begin at 7 a.m. PDT tomorrow, Sept. 1, at the Hall of Fame’s Facebook site, www.facebook.com/baseballhall, and conclude at 2 p.m. PDT Sept. 30. The top three fan selections from votes tallied at the site during September will appear on the final 10-name ballot for the award.

  • A Good Article
Coaching Articles : Eric Musselman File For Coaches Jackson makes Hall of Fame on principle By Roscoe Nance, USA TODAY Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson heads the 2007 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame class, which will be inducted Saturday in Springfield, Mass. The group includes University of North Carolina men's coach Roy Williams, Louisiana State University women's coach Van Chancellor, the 1966 Texas Western University men's team, referee Marvin "Mendy" Rudolph and international coaches Pedro Ferrandiz of Spain and Mirko Novosel of Yugoslavia. Jackson, 61, has won nine NBA championships as a coach — six with the Chicago Bulls and three with the Lakers — tying Hall of Famer Red Auerbach's record. He has coached some of the NBA's greatest players, including Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen with the Bulls and Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal with the Lakers. Jackson gets players to buy into his coaching philosophy, which is influenced by Native American and Eastern beliefs. "The great thing about Phil is the way he has handled players," Hall of Famer Magic Johnson said. "He has a different style, too, that old Zen thing. I love him because he never gets too high and never gets too low and always wants to help the guys grow as men. He teaches them basketball and also teaches them outside the sport." One of his more renowned strategies is handing out books for players to read during road trips. "He's trying to get players to see that there's more to life than the NBA and your performance today," said NBA TV analyst Steve "Snapper" Jones.

  • January 26, 2015 Csnchicago.Com Mr. Cub: Ernie Banks Did It His Way
January 26, 2015 CSNChicago.com Mr. Cub: Ernie Banks did it his way By Patrick Mooney A man walked down Addison Street late Saturday morning with a bouquet of flowers, placing it at the makeshift shrine outside Wrigley Field. A white No. 14 jersey hung from the railing. A Cubs hat, a Cubs helmet, at least one opened Budweiser can and a homemade poster lined the sidewalk. People held up their iPhones to take pictures of the memorial and the name in lights on the marquee: Ernie Banks did it his way. That usually implies a bully with a big ego, a loner making enemies while getting ahead. But for Mr. Cub, this always meant killing them with kindness. That begins to explain the outpouring of emotions in Chicago and all across the country. The team’s official press release on Friday night did not identify a cause of death for Banks, who would have celebrated his 84th birthday on Jan. 31. “He (meant) so much to Chicago fans,” Hall of Famer Billy Williams said. “He was always that positive guy. And when I got the news, it’s just like somebody shot bullets through my heart.” Banks was closing in on his second straight National League MVP Award when Williams made his big-league debut in 1959. The All-Star shortstop put up 92 homers and 272 RBI during that unbelievable two-year period. Banks always seemed to enjoy the moment, never bothered by the attention or burdened by the fame. He loved talking to behind-the-scenes employees at Wrigley Field, and interacting with fans young and old, and bantering with the media.

  • Hall of Fame Broadcaster Hamilton No Stranger to Pitch and Hit Club Banquet
Hall of Fame broadcaster Hamilton no stranger to Pitch and Hit Club banquet By George Castle, CBM Historian Posted Sunday, January 25, 2013 Snaring an award never gets old for Milo Hamilton at 85. “When the Hall of Fame calls come, those are fabulous,” said the 1992 win- ner of the Hall of Fame’s Ford Frick Award for baseball announcers. “I’ve been fortunate to have five of those (from Cooperstown and other institu- tions). When you get the others, you cannot nonchalant them. The people who selected you for those honors thought it was important to do. Not all fall in the Top Ten of what you’ve got- ten in your life, but still it’s an honor to be recognized by a lot of different organizations around the country.” The latest honor for Hamilton, who Milo Hamilton interviews Cubs pitcher Mike Kru- had two stints as a Cubs announcer kow in 1981. and one with the White Sox, is the Pitch and Hit Club’s Lifetime Achievement for Contributions to Baseball. Traveling back from Houston to a kind of second home in Chicago, Hamilton was scheduled to receive the award at the Pitch and Hit Club’s 67th Annual Banquet Sunday, Jan. 27, at the Car- lisle Banquet Hall in Lombard, Ill. And receiving the honor at this event is special for Hamilton because of his history with both the city and the Pitch and Hit Club. “When I was in Chicago, I went to that banquet many, many times,” he said. “The last time I was in Chicago, I emceed that banquet and we honored Mary Frances Veeck.

  • Umpire Stories
So, You Want to Be an Umpire? David Vincent Modern umpires like to be invisible on the field and consider it a good day when no one remembers them after a game. There have been days, though, that are memorable ones. Here are some of those days. *** In 1882, National League Umpire Dick Higham, a former player, was expelled from the game for colluding with gamblers. He had been the first umpire to wear a mask on the field. Higham umpired his last game on June 22, 1882 in Buffalo. *** On June 19, 1896, the Chicago Colts (now Cubs) were in Cleveland to play the Spiders. The latter team was well known around the league for acting in a rowdy manner. In the seventh inning, Umpire Tom Lynch fined and ejected Cleveland Captain Patsy Tebeau, who refused to leave. Tebeau instead rushed at Lynch to assault the umpire but the two were separated by other players. Lynch refused to work the rest of that game and left the field. After a long delay, the game resumed with Chicago player Con Daily calling the pitches and Cleveland player Cy Young making the calls on the bases. Tebeau remained in the game and Chicago’s Cap Anson protested the game because Tebeau remained in the contest even though he had been ejected. Chicago won the game, 8-3, so the protest was not lodged. After the game, Lynch told a reporter: “I suppose I should not have permitted my indignation to get the better of me, but after all there are things that pass human endurance, and one of them surely is to be called vile names.” Lynch refused to work in Cleveland after that and did not until 1898.

  • The Endless Summer of Bob Uecker Sports Illustrated July 1, 2013
The Endless Summer Of Bob Uecker Sports Illustrated July 1, 2013 A brewers radio broadcast isn't just about the game (thank God). It's a trip inside the beautiful mind of Milwaukee's first fan. By Luke Winn ••• INNING 1 ••• Understand this about the Bob Uecker Experience: Even if you're observing him in his natural habitat, matching his radio voice with his vantage point, you're not sharing the same view. Here he is in the bottom of the first inning of the 53rd game of his 43rd season calling the Brewers on WTMJ, sitting in the visitors' booth at Citizens Bank Park, peering out into a hot haze at dusk. "Looking out at downtown Philadelphia here in the background," Uecker says to listeners on 36 stations in Wisconsin and one on Michigan's Upper Peninsula, as well as on MLB.com and Sirius XM. "Looking alllll the way up the shoreline. Atlantic City, people in the water up there. Boy, what a sight." Uecker's pitch recognition skills were such that he batted .200 in six seasons as a major league catcher, but at 78 he apparently is telescopic, able to spot details more than 60 miles away—or decades back in time. "500 Club in the background," Uecker says, name-checking the classic A.C. nightspot that burned down in 1973. "Boats. Sailfish.... Octopus." Gonna have to take your word for it, Uke. "The pitch, swing and a bouncer hit to first. There's Betancourt. Yuni B. takes care of Ben Revere." I can confirm, from over Uecker's shoulder, that Milwaukee's Yuniesky Betancourt, undistracted by mollusks, logs the out 3-unassisted.
